Kuala Lumpur, April 3 (IANS) Najib Tun Razak, son of a former premier, was sworn in Friday morning as Malaysia’s sixth prime minister.
He took over from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who stepped down after leading the country for over five years. Badawi made way for Razak well before the end of his second term, marking a smooth political transition in the prosperous Southeast Asian nation.
Razak, 55, took his oath of office before Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the royal head of the state.
Dressed in traditional black baju melayu (shirt) complete with sampan (a waist band), Razak was administered the oath of secrecy, loyalty and confidentiality.
The entire ceremony was steeped in Malaysian traditions, Star Onine said.
The swearing in ceremony was witnessed by Badawi and his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad.
Razak was born in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, July 23, 1953. He is the eldest son of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the nation’s second prime minister.
His appointment is significant in the country’s history as this is the first time that a former prime minister’s son is holding the post, Bernama, the official news agency said.
Razak became the country’s youngest member of parliament at the age of 22 when he won the Pekan seat unopposed in a by-election following his father’s death.
He then went from strength to strength in politics and government to reach the pinnacle, being elected president of the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) last week that paved the way to his becoming the prime minister.

Washington, Mar 06 (ANI): Singer Chris Brown, who allegedly attacked Rihanna and left her with horrific injuries, has been charged with two felony counts.
According to an affidavit, Brown’s alleged victim Robyn Fenty (Rihanna’s given name Robyn Fenty) was brutally battered as he shoved her head against the window of the hired Lamborghini, repeatedly punched, and bit her.
According to Fox News, it is also alleged that Brown shouted: I’m going to beat the **** out of you when we get home. You wait and see.”
The report suggests that the alleged attack took place after Brown received a text message from a woman “who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with,” Brown then tried to kick her out of the car but could not, as she was wearing a seatbelt.
After that Brown allegedly banged her head against her window, and when she turned to face him, he “continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand.”
The affidavit revealed that blood filled Rihanna’s mouth and spilled on her clothing and the interior of the Lamborghini.
“Robyn F” then tried to a fake message saying, “I am on my way home. Make sure the cops are there when I get there,” to which Brown replied, “You just did the stupidest thing ever. I’m going to kill you,” and continued to punch her.
Rihanna then “bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and head near her lap in attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied by Brown.”
Rihanna eventually fell unconscious, and a woman who heard her cry called 911, before Brown fled the scene.
Brown, released on 50,000 dollar bail until a hearing on April 6, has apologized and revealed that he was taking anger management classes.
He and Rihanna have reportedly recently reconciled.
Meanwhile, Brown, 19, has been ordered by the cops to provide fingerprints and DNA samples before the hearing. (ANI)

Washington, Mar 6 (ANI): Here’s some bad news for people who carry excess weight around the middle: love handles can impair lung function.
According to a report published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Medicine, a high weight circumference is strongly associated with decreased lung function.
o reach the conclusion, researchers analysed health information of more than 120,000 people from the Paris Investigations Preventives et Cliniques Center, and assessed demographic background, smoking history, alcohol consumption, as well as lung function, including FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second) and FVC (forced vital capacity, or the total expiratory volume) with respect to BMI, waist circumference and other measures of metabolic health.
“After adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, alcohol consumption, leisure time physical activity and cardiovascular history, metabolic syndrome remained independently associated with lung function impairment,” wrote lead author Natalie Leone, M.D., of French National Institute for Health and Medical Research.
“We found a positive independent relationship between lung function impairment and metabolic syndrome due mainly to abdominal obesity,” the expert added.
Abdominal obesity was defined as having a waist circumference of greater than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.
“[This] study demonstrated that only mild abdominal adiposity, even with a normal body mass index (BMI), in associated with lower FVC,” said Paul Enright, M.D., of the University of Arizona, in an accompanying editorial.
While more research will undoubtedly shed light on the underlying mechanisms linking abdominal fat to lowered lung function, there is an immediate clinical consideration: “I believe there is now enough evidence to recommend that waist circumference always be measured before spirometry tests.
“Abdominal obesity could then be highlighted on the printed report so that the physician interpreting the report could take the effect of obesity into account,” wrote Dr. Enright. (ANI)

Washington, Mar 4 (ANI): People living in neighbourhoods with high density of fast food outlets, and who frequently eat at those restaurants, are more likely to report an increase of 3 pounds in weight and .8 inches in waist circumference, according to a new study.
On the other hand, the research led by Oregon Research Institute (ORI) scientist Fuzhong Li, Ph.D., also found that high-walkability neighbourhoods were linked with a decrease of 2.7 pounds in weight and 0.6 inches in waist size among residents who increased their levels of vigorous physical activity during a year.
“This is one of the few longitudinal studies that focus on change in individuals’ body weight over time in relation to their lifestyle behaviors and immediate living environments,” said Li.
He added: “The uniqueness of this study lies in its environment-person approach which we use to show that health-impeding environments, such as a high density of fast-food outlets, together with residents’ behavior, such as eating fast food regularly, can have an unhealthy impact on body weight. On the other hand, health-promoting environments, such as walkable neighborhood streets, in conjunction with physically active residents, can have a positive impact on body weight over time.”
The study is part of the Portland Oregon Neighborhood Environment and Health Study where researchers are following a sample of over 1200 local residents ages 50-75 years old over a three-year period.
And they are using anthropometric and survey measures, such as body weight, height, eating habits, food intake, physical activity, and perceptions of their immediate neighbourhood environment.
Also, the scientists have taken objective measures of built environment characteristics, such as land-use mix, density of fast-food outlets, street connectivity, and public transit stations, and the presence of green and open spaces in 120 randomly selected neighborhoods in Portland, Oregon.
The project was aimed to examine change in body weight and physical activity in relation to built environment.
“To combat the obesity/overweight problem, it appears clear that, from the perspectives of public health and urban design, efforts are needed to improve features of modifiable built environments by making them more conducive to healthy eating and increasing physical activity,” said Li.
The American Journal of Epidemiology recently published the study. (ANI)

Melbourne, Feb 24 (ANI): Don’t want to go for crash diets or cosmetic surgeries to look slimmer? Well, then here’s the ultimate option for you to get that perfect figure- Shapewear.
Shapewear or body-smoothing underwear has swept over celebrities and body-conscious women alike, and has made a huge 720 million dollars a year in the US alone.
The knickers range by lingerie designer Bruno Schiavi and plastic surgeon and reality TV star Robert Rey, boasted a sale of 1 million dollars in its debut weekend.
Another leading brand is Spanx, which was even featured by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey on her show. Since then most Hollywood stars, including Katherine Heigl, Jessica Alba and Cate Blanchett, are using these knickers.
Other brands on the market include Hollywood Shapes, Nancy Gantz and Bella Bodies.
A woman who uses shapewear has said that wearing a pair of Rey’s high waist step-ins can take her down a dress size, reducing her waist measurement by 7cm.lthough many claim it to be just a modern version of a corset or girdle, Jet International (which distributes Spanx in Australia) sales director Alicia Kawalsky said that technology has made shapewear much safer and easier for women to wear.
“It doesn’t feel restrictive. You don’t have the feeling it’s closing in on you,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.
She added that there were seven different sizes currently on the Australian market, but a perfect fit is what works for you.
“There is no benefit from buying it in the wrong size,” she said.
Aussie actress Isla Fisher revealed that her weight-loss secret was a pair of tummy-tucking knickers.
Following the shooting of her film ‘Confessions Of A Shopaholic’, Isla said that she owed her on-screen figure to Spanx.
“They’re amazing. They’re like a lycra bodysuit that holds you in. You can not breathe and you can’t go to the toilet but they’re worth it,” she admitted recently.
But wearing the underwear to the point of losing your breath has raised concerns of heath complications.
However, Dr. Cindy Pan has said that one can easily use the underwear to smooth out lumps and bumps as long as the garments are correctly fitted.
“It’s not supposed to transform you from a size 14 to a six. If you use common sense and comfort as a guide, I don’t think that you are going to be doing yourself too much harm. But the main thing is to be realistic about the sizing,” she said. (ANI)

London, Feb 21 (ANI): Hollywood actress Kate Winslet, who has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best actress category for ‘The Reader’, has revealed that she is calming her nerves before the award ceremony by leading a normal life.
The ‘Hamlet’ actress, who has been nominated five times for an Academy award, but has never won any, says that she has been keeping herself busy by doing her household chores to beat the pre-Oscar anxiety.
“I have been doing all the normal things like making shepherd’s pie and taking the kids to school,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.
While Kate is pretty nervous about the award ceremony, she has been taking suggestions for her acceptance speech, if she wins.
But the sweetest advice came from her son, who just told her to keep it simple and utter her gratitude to everybody, who helped her reach here.
“‘I think you should say thank you to everybody for helping me.’ Which I thought was so sweet,” Kate said about her son’s advice.
Meanwhile, Kate has also said that she would like to wear something comfortable to the event, as she doesn’t want to be in discomfort at the special moment.
“There’s no way I could walk out of the door in something that was going to be digging into my waist and that was so super-figure-hugging-tight that you can’t visit the lavatory in it. I just can’t be doing with all that. It’s like torture, and if you are in pain then you can’t enjoy the moment,” Kate said. (ANI)

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): ‘The O.C.’ star Mischa Barton has revealed that Pilates is the secret behind her slim frame.
She said: “For me, it’s all about Pilates recently. I’m obsessed with Pilates. I think it’s so fun.”
The 23-year-old actress had recently sparked concerns for her health after displaying an increasingly thin physique, reports the China Daily.
Mischa hit out at critics of her weight loss, insisting she has never embarked on faddy diets or extreme exercise regimes.
She added to America’s OK! magazine: “I don’t do any crash diets. There’s nothing that I really do like that, because I’m always working. I mean, before I go do a film, I do workout more. I do get ready for a film and try to be healthy and in shape. And when I’m not working, I do less of it.
“I do more cardio because I work long hours. Jogging, running – tuff like that’s really good before you do a film so you have more energy.” (ANI)

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): A combination of resistance and aerobic exercises may help reduce insulin resistance and improve functional abilities in obese older adults, says a new study.
According to the authors, there is an urgent need to develop effective strategies designed to manage the risk factors for disease and disability and thereby improve the overall health and quality of life of older adults.
“With respect to risk factors for disease, it is well established that aging is associated with a marked increase in insulin resistance, a primary defect that precedes serious diseases, including diabetes, stroke and coronary heart disease independent of other major cardiovascular disease risk factors,” they said.
“Aging is also associated with a progressive increase in functional limitations that affect activities of daily living and quality of life and that are highly predictive of subsequent disability,” they added.
For the study, the researchers led by Lance E. Davidson, Ph.D., of Queen’s University, Kingsland, Ontario, Canada, and Columbia University, New York conducted a randomized clinical trial involving 136 sedentary older adults who were abdominally obese, meaning they had a waist circumference of at least 102 centimeters (40 inches) for men or 88 centimeters (35 inches) for women.
For period of six months, the participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups.
Resistance exercise which involved one set of nine exercises, 20 minutes three times per week, aerobic exercise involving 30 minutes of moderate-intensity treadmill walking five times per week and combined exercise which involved 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week plus 60 minutes of resistance training weekly
And fourth and the last group was the control group that did not exercise.
The results showed that insulin resistance improved in the aerobic and combined exercise groups as compared with the control group.
All exercise groups improved their functional limitation compared with the control group.
However the combined exercise group showed greater improvement than the aerobic only group.
Moreover, cardiorespiratory fitness increased in the aerobic and combined exercise groups but not in the resistance exercise group.
“That these observations were obtained in response to 90 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise combined with 60 minutes of resistance exercise performed across three days each week is promising and suggests that substantial improvement in overall health through effective management of risk factors for disease and disability can be achieved in a pragmatic manner,” the authors write.
The study appears in Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. (ANI)
