Secret Whitehall e-mails show Iraq dossier was ’sexed up’

London, Mar.13 (ANI): Four secret Whitehall e-mails released yesterday suggest that a dossier for invading Iraq was “sexed up”.

According to The Independent, the e-mails disclose that the intelligence services were sceptical over the “iffy drafting” of government claims that Saddam Hussein could mount a missile strike on his neighbours within 45 minutes of ordering an attack.

Officials privately mocked the assertions that the Iraqi president was covertly trying to develop a nuclear capability and wisecracked that perhaps he had recruited “Dr Frankenstein” to his supposed crack team of nuclear scientists.

The release of a series of confidential memos and e-mails, following a protracted Freedom of Information battle, reignited the controversy over accusations that Tony Blair’s government “spun” Britain into war.
Last night both the Tories and the Liberal Democrats renewed their demands for a full public inquiry into the decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq.

The 45-minute claim – presented to MPs in a notorious dossier on 24 September 2002, six months before military action began – was central to the Blair government’s justification for war.

But a memo sent 13 days earlier by Desmond Bowen, head of the Cabinet Office defence secretariat, to John Scarlett, who was head of the Joint Intelligence Committee, suggested he had grave reservations over the threat. His comments were copied to Blair’s press secretary Alastair Campbell and to his chief-of-staff Jonathan Powell.

Last night William Hague, the shadow Foreign Secretary, said: “This is the latest in a steady stream of damaging revelations about the events leading up to the Iraq war.”

Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman, said: “This confirms the widely-held suspicions that leading officials and political advisers close to Tony Blair were deliberately tweaking the presentation of the intelligence to bolster the case for war on Iraq.” (ANI)

‘9 minute butt-lift’ miracle cream to hit market shelves in UK

London, Mar 5 (ANI): A miracle cream which claims to destroy cellulite in nine minutes will go on sale in the UK this week.

The serum, which is worth 68 dollars, is made from plant stem cells.

According to the makers of Adonia LegTone, the plant extracts help tone up weak skin stem cells.

They are said to be the main cause for cellulite, reports The Sun.

The serum has been hailed as a ‘major breakthrough’ in America where it is dubbed ‘the nine minute butt-lift’.

As per clinical tests carried out in independent American laboratories found the cream reduced cellulite by as much as 47 per cent in nine minutes and around 70 per cent over a six-week period.

Dr Mark Binette, of maker Greek Island Labs, said: “A healthy diet, lashings of water and a regular exercise regime will help keep cellulite levels down – but sometimes a girl just needs a little extra help. The secret has been captured in a bottle.”

One of the main causes of cellulite is when skin stem cells become weak and dormant. (ANI)

CID RAW report ‘leak’ to Pak media, a ploy to drag India into Lahore attack

New Delhi, Mar.4 (ANI): The Pakistan Government was warned about a possible attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team by the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Punjab, recently.

The Punjab CID had also tabled a ’secret’ report saying that the Indian intelligence agency-RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) was chalking out plans to attack the Lankan to malign Pakistan’s image on the international stage.

The report tagged “SECRET/IMMEDIATE” with subject “SOURCE REPORT” said : “It has reliably been learnt that RAW (Indian intelligence agency) has assigned its agents the task to target Sri Lankan cricket team during its current visit to Lahore, especially while travelling between the hotel and stadium or at hotel during their stay.

This ’secret’ report has now surfaced in Pakistani media.

But the million dollar question here is that if Islamabad had so specific knowledge about the threat to the visiting Lankans, then why it didn’t act.

Moreover, the Pakistani authorities had promised unprecedented security arrangements for the visitors during the series.

So, the sudden appearance of the Pak CID report charging the Indian intelligence agency, RAW for plotting the Lahore attack, has some stinking factor behind it.

It seems that Pakistan, in a deliberate effort to divert the international attention from its own failure, has put forward the propaganda of attacking India and trickled the CID report to the media.

Putting India to blame had started even before the dust of the Lahore terror attack had settled with a PPP leader, within minutes of the attack, saying: “This is clearly the work of a foreign hand.”

No surprise that the recent ‘leaking’ of the ‘top secret’ intelligence report is just another ploy to drag India into the issue. (ANI)

The ‘Wedding Crashers’ star is soon to tie the knot with observant Jew Sacha Baron Cohen.

She decided to embrace Judaism as a mark of respect to her fiance and his parents.

Women increasingly turning to shapewear to get perfect body

Melbourne, Feb 24 (ANI): Don’t want to go for crash diets or cosmetic surgeries to look slimmer? Well, then here’s the ultimate option for you to get that perfect figure- Shapewear.

Shapewear or body-smoothing underwear has swept over celebrities and body-conscious women alike, and has made a huge 720 million dollars a year in the US alone.

The knickers range by lingerie designer Bruno Schiavi and plastic surgeon and reality TV star Robert Rey, boasted a sale of 1 million dollars in its debut weekend.

Another leading brand is Spanx, which was even featured by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey on her show. Since then most Hollywood stars, including Katherine Heigl, Jessica Alba and Cate Blanchett, are using these knickers.

Other brands on the market include Hollywood Shapes, Nancy Gantz and Bella Bodies.

A woman who uses shapewear has said that wearing a pair of Rey’s high waist step-ins can take her down a dress size, reducing her waist measurement by 7cm.lthough many claim it to be just a modern version of a corset or girdle, Jet International (which distributes Spanx in Australia) sales director Alicia Kawalsky said that technology has made shapewear much safer and easier for women to wear.

“It doesn’t feel restrictive. You don’t have the feeling it’s closing in on you,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She added that there were seven different sizes currently on the Australian market, but a perfect fit is what works for you.

“There is no benefit from buying it in the wrong size,” she said.

Aussie actress Isla Fisher revealed that her weight-loss secret was a pair of tummy-tucking knickers.

Following the shooting of her film ‘Confessions Of A Shopaholic’, Isla said that she owed her on-screen figure to Spanx.

“They’re amazing. They’re like a lycra bodysuit that holds you in. You can not breathe and you can’t go to the toilet but they’re worth it,” she admitted recently.

But wearing the underwear to the point of losing your breath has raised concerns of heath complications.

However, Dr. Cindy Pan has said that one can easily use the underwear to smooth out lumps and bumps as long as the garments are correctly fitted.

“It’s not supposed to transform you from a size 14 to a six. If you use common sense and comfort as a guide, I don’t think that you are going to be doing yourself too much harm. But the main thing is to be realistic about the sizing,” she said. (ANI)

George Bush and Laura shift to new Dallas home

Dallas, Feb 21 (ANI): A month after leaving the White House, former President George W Bush and his wife Laura, shifted to their new home in a wealthy Dallas neighbourhood.

Bush’s motorcade drove past a security barricade on Friday evening, bringing the former first couple to their new residence.

Apparently, the barricade was set up by Dallas Police and Secret Service agents to limit access to the neighbourhood.

“President and Mrs Bush are glad to be back in Dallas, appreciate the warm welcome by their neighbours, and look forward to once again being part of the Dallas community,” said Rob Saliterman, a spokesman for Bush’s office in Dallas.

The Dallas home is a 1959 ranch-style brick home located at the dead end street of the posh locality. It consists of four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and a wet bar.

The 8,500 square feet house has a wide front yard and dark shutters, with a gate at the top of the driveway that lends privacy. (ANI)

Mischa Barton’s secret behind tiny waist – Pilates

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): ‘The O.C.’ star Mischa Barton has revealed that Pilates is the secret behind her slim frame.

She said: “For me, it’s all about Pilates recently. I’m obsessed with Pilates. I think it’s so fun.”

The 23-year-old actress had recently sparked concerns for her health after displaying an increasingly thin physique, reports the China Daily.

Mischa hit out at critics of her weight loss, insisting she has never embarked on faddy diets or extreme exercise regimes.

She added to America’s OK! magazine: “I don’t do any crash diets. There’s nothing that I really do like that, because I’m always working. I mean, before I go do a film, I do workout more. I do get ready for a film and try to be healthy and in shape. And when I’m not working, I do less of it.

“I do more cardio because I work long hours. Jogging, running – tuff like that’s really good before you do a film so you have more energy.” (ANI)

Freida Pinto splits dumps her fiance

London, Feb 15 (ANI): ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star Freida Pinto has dumped her fiance because she wants to concentrate on her career, it has been revealed.

According to friends, the 24-year-old has told Mumbai PR agent Rohan Antao that she could not be with him and be a world-renowned actress at the same time.

Pinto didn’t want to get caught up in the regular routine life just when her career was taking off. So, she decided to call off the engagement, a pal said.

During her meteoric rise to stardom, Pinto had kept Rohan a secret from the media.

Pals say that Rohan is ‘devastated’ at losing the girl he thought he was marrying.

“It’s been a terrible time for him. One minute they were getting married, the next it was all over,” News of the World quoted a close friend, as saying.

The couple met at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, where Freida studied English and Rohan chemistry.

Rohan then became boss of a small PR firm, and last year popped the question while the actress was filming the Oscar-nominated movie.

She posted photos of her engagement party on her Facebook web page but they have now been taken down.

For the last two months, Pinto has been promoting British director Danny Boyle’s flick around the UK and USA-putting a strain on her relationship.

“Freida realised she had been presented with an incredible opportunity but would not be able to make the most of it if she was tied down. She knew that she had to put acting first from now on,” the pal said.

“She and Rohan talked on the phone about finding a way to make it work-but her circumstances had changed so much they knew it wasn’t to be,” the pal added. (ANI)

Second ICC Broadcaster and Sponsor Forum ends in Dubai

Dubai, Feb.11 (ANI): The second annual two-day ICC Broadcaster and Sponsor Forum was held in Dubai this week.

The forum brought together all ICC’s major commercial partners – ESPN STAR Sports, Reliance Mobile, LG Electronics, Pepsico, Yahoo!, Emirates Airline and Reebok – as well as the ICC’s main suppliers and service providers.

The theme of the forum was partnerships and ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat told the meeting that it was incumbent on the ICC to forge successful partnerships with the commercial sector.

“Financially, we depend on our commercial partners. That is no secret,” said Mr Lorgat. “We need to optimise our revenues from our events and other properties in order to develop the game around the world and ensure the future well-being of cricket.

“We feel we offer good value for the product that we have on offer. Cricket is arguably the world’s second most popular team sport after soccer and it can certainly boast one of the most passionate and loyal fan-bases.

“Cricket is unique in that it now has three viable formats of the game regularly being played at international level, each with its own style, support base and history. This provides great variation for players, spectators, sponsors and broadcasters to find their niche.

“However, we can never hope to optimise the revenues from this great game without a healthy partnership with the business and broadcast sectors.

“As with all good relationships, there will be ups and downs but whatever problem is put before us, whatever challenge we face, we will work hard to make sure the relationship works because it means too much to the future health and well-being of the game. Failure is not an option,” he added.

The forum heard presentations from SuperSport’s chief executive Imtiaz Patel, assistant vice-president, syndication of ESPN STAR Sports Tom Harrison, Sanjay Behl, head of brand and marketing at Reliance Communications, Nitin Mathur, director – marketing, Yahoo! and Depender Redhu of LG Electronics among others.

Harrison said: “This forum was a very useful event as it enables ICC’s principle investors to air ideas and concerns with respect to ICC events.” (ANI)

Why UK men are losing interest in sex?

London, Feb 10 (ANI): The “Not tonight darling, I’ve got a headache” syndrome is usually associated with women when they’re not in the mood, but lately the excuse is increasingly being used by UK men to put off sex, according to a survey.

The new poll by independent charity the Men’s Health Forum has found that 15 per cent of men aged between 18 and 59 admitted to a “lack of interest in sex”.

Relationship-counselling service Relate has revealed that there’s a 40 percent increase in the number of men saying they had gone off sex, compared with 10 years ago.

All the above men with low libido don’t face any physical problems; it’s just that they do not want to have sex.
Research has found that the growing trend of the drop in male desire is a direct result of women’s changing role in society.

Men get overwhelmed with the modern woman, who is confident and comfortable with her own sexual needs and desires.
Apart from that men are bombarded with an overload of sexual images on the Internet, cable TV and in magazines, so much so, that it may be leading them to prefer the ever-ready fantasy to the reality.

Renowned Chicago-based relationships therapist Michele Weiner-Davis caused a furore in the US by claiming that at least 25 per cent of all men suffer from low desire.

It was, “America’s best-kept secret,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Michael Gilbert, author of The Disposable Male, said: “Western men feel marginalised.

“In a third of American homes where both partners work, women earn more than men. This tears at the fabric of male sexuality.”

And the problem is further worsened by the number of overworked men who are turning to alcohol to relax after work, and it has been revealed earlier that booze interferes with testosterone.
Phillip Hodson, a psychotherapist and author of Men: An Investigation Into The Emotional Male, said: “Sex is all about play. Libido comes out of a moment of idleness and down time. But British men work the longest hours in Europe. Sex and the clock don’t go well together.

“Men drink because it’s a short-cut to relaxation – but alcohol dampens the libido. (ANI)

What makes solid glass different from the molten liquid from which it is formed

Washington, Feb 7 (ANI): Scientists have cracked a controversial mystery of what makes solid glass different from the molten liquid from which it is formed, by presenting an explanation of how atoms behave as glass cools and hardens.

The team of scientists is from the University of Nottingham and the University of California, Berkeley in collaboration with the University of Bath.

Though the secret of glass making came to Britain with the Romans in 55 BC, but only now do scientists believe they are a step closer to unravelling the controversy that surrounds the question: what makes solid glass different from the molten liquid from which it is formed?

According to Juan Garrahan, Professor of Physics, in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Nottingham, snapshots taken with x-rays show that in ice, water molecules fit together in an ordered array, which is called a crystal, while in liquid water, the molecules are jumbled. Scientists can understand why ice is rigid and liquid water is fluid largely from these structural differences.

“Glass, on the other hand, does not offer this explanation because a snapshot of the molecular structure of solid glass is almost indistinguishable from that of the molten liquid. Both appear to be jumbled random collections of atoms,” said Garrahan.

“This observation is at the heart of the problem: if the solid state of glass has a molecular structure just like that of the liquid, how can it be so rigid? Controversy has resulted from the absence of a clear answer to this question,” he explained.

Using computer simulations, researchers were able to test the theoretical and computational process of melting and hardening glass.

They have not yet solved the glass transition problem however they have provided evidence for a new perspective on glassy phenomena which may eventually lead to its solution.

According to Dr. Robert Jack, from the Department of Physics at the University of Bath, “By focusing on the ability or inability of molecules to flow, we have provided evidence for a new kind of sudden transition between the flowing liquid and the solid glass. This transformation is apparent only when the system is viewed in both space and time.”

Ultimately, the answer is important because the principles that underlie the glass transition can guide scientists and engineers towards methods for producing better glass – stronger and longer lasting.

For over a century, principles of thermodynamics have aided the design of ordered solids, materials like steel and aluminium alloys. No such principles are yet settled for production of glassy solids.

The current work is believed to be a significant step towards these principles. (ANI)

Raccoons running wild in Barack Obama’s White House lawns!

Washington, Feb.6 (ANI): Critters are now roaming the grounds of the White House, and to deal with the problem, the Secret Service has called in the National Park Service (NPS).

The NPS is in hot pursuit of a pack of raccoons that were spotted roaming the manicured grounds near the White House; the Washington Post quoted a spokesman, as saying.
Masked bandits scurrying through Washington aren’t news to the seasoned trappers who have made a handsome living relocating varmints from attics, crawl spaces and chimneys in homes.

“The idea of raccoons on the White House grounds give us great pause,” spokesman Bill Burton said.

Some wonder whether the raccoons have been there all along, and the Texans who previously occupied the White House (Bush and family), with the entire ranch dwelling they did, paid no heed to them.

Still others believe the Obamas’ dithering on the purchase of a guard dog gave the intruders a window of opportunity.

But John Hadidian, the director of Urban Wildlife Programs for the Humane Society of the United States, said he believes the raccoons are new to the 18 acres of President’s Park surrounding the White House.

“My theory on what’s going on has to do with the acorns,” Hadidian said.

Hadidian isn’t talking about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, but about the mysterious shortage of acorns, the nut of the oak tree, that is a diet staple for many of the urban creatures who share our city.

Hadidian spent 10 years studying D.C. raccoons for the Park Service. He said they prefer Rock Creek Park, where there is one raccoon for every three of the park’s 1,700 acres. And the shortage of acorns in that park is driving them to look elsewhere.

Raccoons use the city’s storm drain system like their personal Metro, an underground world that allows them an efficient, citywide route of attack on garbage cans, he said.

“They probably are just looking for food,” he said.

“They move into buildings where there are structural deficiencies. I’m going to assume the White House is pretty secure and well maintained. I think they were just passing through,” he added.
It’s not the first time that monumental Washington has had a run-in with the natural world.

A frightened deer was fished out of the Tidal Basin just a couple of years ago. And in 1997, three does smashed into the White House fence.

Rather than call in a specialist — with humane traps and peanut butter bait (the non-salmonella kind) — the Obamas might choose to look to past administrations for inspiration.

President Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon, Rebecca, who often sat on his shoulder or was cuddled by the first lady. Rebecca terrorized the staff, however. (ANI)

‘Master gene’ behind blood vessel development identified

Washington, Feb 5 (ANI): In a breakthrough study, researchers from University of Minnesota have identified the ‘master gene’ behind blood vessel development.

They hope that the new discovery will lead to improve treatments for heart disease and cancer.

In the genetically engineered mice, researchers were able to identify a protein called Nkx2-5.

This protein turns on a certain gene and determines the fate of a group of cells in a developing embryo.

“If we can understand the mechanism, or how certain stem cells choose a particular path, we can alter it to prevent or treat disease,” said Daniel Garry, M.D., Ph.D., lead researcher, executive director of the institute, and chief of the cardiovascular division in the Department of Medicine.

“This gene discovery provides the key to unlocking the secret of how blood vessels grow,” he added.

The researchers knew that certain precursor cells, or progenitor cells, become the three types of cells that make up the cardiovascular system: smooth muscle, endothelial (blood vessel), and cardiac muscle.

By understanding how the cells develop, Garry said they will be able to study how they might modify the gene to create a desired response.

“Next we are looking at how we could over-express the gene or knock it down,” he added.

The study appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)

Octuplets’ mum ‘already has 6 kids’

London, Jan 29 (ANI): The woman, who became mother to octuplets on January 26, already has six kids – including twins.

All her previous children are living with their grandparents while she is recovering in hospital after delivering six boys and two girls.

While the octuplets are doing well, the identity of the mum, believed to be Hispanic, is being kept secret.

A spokeswoman at the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, California, said that the mum of 14 is recovering well.

The revelation that the mother already has six children will intensify speculation that she has had fertility treatment.

Also, the news will spark questions about why a mother of six would receive help to conceive again.

“If a medical practitioner had anything to do with it there’s some degree of inappropriate medical therapy there,” The Sun quoted Michael Tucker, a leading US researcher in infertility treatment, as saying.

The babies were born nine weeks early and are believed to be only the second set of live octuplets born in America. (ANI)

Meet the British ‘Barack Obama’

London, Jan 29 (ANI): A 29-year-old mortgage advisor in Britain is in demand these days – because he resembles US President Barack Obama.

After Obama’s historic win, Ryan Skeggs has been snapped up by a doubles agency, and is enjoying his instant popularity.

“I first started getting recognised when he was running against Hillary Clinton,” The Sun quoted him as saying.

“But since Obama came to power it’s gone crazy.

“I did some filming up in London for French TV.

“I was flanked by two guys dressed as Secret Service agents and people were scared to speak to me directly.

“They kept asking for permission to say something.

“I felt nervous at the start but then I thought, ‘Why don’t I just run with it.’ So I put on my Barack Obama accent and had fun.

“I had people ringing up their mums, saying ‘I’ve met the president,’” he added.

Skeggs, who lives in Stevenage, is also perfecting his ‘Obama voice’ since signing a deal with an agency last month.

He taped several speeches and sat at home repeating the lines to make himself seem even more convincing. He’s even worked on mimicking his mannerisms.

“I’ve never properly tried to speak in an American accent, except down the pub messing about,” said Skeggs.

“So I watched a few videos of Obama to work on it.

“He speaks in such a clear and precise way and at a lower octave.

“I’ve pretty much nailed it now. It’s so funny tricking people – I can’t get my head around it,” he added.

Skeggs landed his new double job after girlfriend Wendy sent off his snaps to fakefaces.co.uk . (ANI)

Secret heart op at 15 that saved Ronaldo’s football career revealed

London, Jan.29 (ANI): Manchester United and Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had to have a heart operation when he was 15 to save his sporting career, his mother revealed yesterday.
Doctors diagnosed the now Manchester United ace with a racing heart. It was then feared that the Portuguese winger – now 23 and World Footballer of the Year – might have to give up playing. ut he was whipped into hospital for delicate laser surgery that cured the problem, reports The Sun.
“It seems the treatment allowed him to run even faster!”, Ronaldo’s mum Dolores Aveiro joked yesterday after revealing the secret.

Ronaldo was a promising young player with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon when the problem emerged.

Dolores, who lives on the island of Madeira, explained: “His heart raced a lot when he wasn’t running.

“The people in charge at Sporting alerted me and I went to Portugal where I had to sign some papers and authorise him being treated in hospital.”

Ronaldo underwent rigorous medical examinations and it was decided to operate to solve his irregular heart beat.

“Cristiano wasn’t very worried – he didn’t take the situation very seriously – but I got a big fright,” Dolores said. (ANI)
