India says no to AIDS drug patents, reaffirms role as ‘pharmacy’ of poor countries

London, September 4 (ANI): India has rejected applications from two US companies for patents on two key AIDS drugs in a move that could mean more people in poor countries will have access to life-saving medicines.

According to a report in Nature News, the decisions are the latest in a string of legal victories for Cipla, India’s largest generic drug maker.

The move could also signal that patent offices in emerging economies are set to take a tougher line than industrialized countries on which drugs deserve patents.

India’s patent office rejected claims by Gilead on Tenofovir – a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, which is a frontline drug against HIV/AIDS in poor countries – and by Tibotec on Darunavir, a newer and more expensive protease inhibitor used as a second-line drug.

Both drugs block enzymes that HIV needs to replicate.

The rejection of patents on the two drugs opens the way for India to not only produce cheaper generics for its own population, but also export them to countries where the drug is not patented – reaffirming India’s role as the ‘pharmacy’ of poor countries.

“We are delighted that we have been vindicated,” said Yusuf Hamied, chairman and managing director of Cipla.

The major battle was over Tenofovir, given its extensive use.

In 2006, Cipla and a group of Indian and Brazilian non-government organizations (NGOs) independently filed oppositions to Gilead’s patent applications on the drug – marking the first time foreign NGOs had joined Indian ones in contesting a drug patent, a move motivated by the fact that the decision could impact pricing of the drug in Brazil.

Gilead responded by striking a deal the same year with 13 other Indian generic manufacturers, giving them a license to make the drug for a 5 percent royalty.

“Gilead was worried that they might lose, so they offered licenses, but these came with a sting in the tail,” said Michelle Childs, director of Medecins sans Frontieres’s Access to Essential Medicines Campaign.

Manufacturers could only buy the active ingredient – the most expensive part of a drug – from Gilead-approved suppliers, and they could only sell the drug to 95 of the poorest countries, not to middle-income countries such as China and Brazil which nonetheless have substantial poor populations.

Together these restrictions limited the price reductions the generic makers could offer, according to Childs.

“The Indian patent office decision now guarantees such countries access to a cheap generic supplier,” she said.

“Cipla decided to fight rather than sign up to the license; it took a risk and it has paid off,” said Childs. (ANI)

Gujarat Govt. bans sale of Jaswant Singh’s book in the State

Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat), Aug.19 (ANI): Narendra Modi-led Gujarat Government on Wednesday banned sale of the expelled Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jaswant Singh book titled– Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence-in the State.

The Gujarat government blamed Jaswant’s book for denigrating the image of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, who was a Gujarati and held in high esteem by people across Gujarat and rest of the India for his role during India’s freedom struggle against the British rulers.

Singh observes in his book that Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel together conceded Pakistan to Jinnah with help from the British.

Patel occupies a pride of place in BJP’s historiography with the party eulogising his tough action for the integration of rebellious Hyderabad and Junagarh with the Union, and contrasting it with the Nehru’s “blunder” in taking the Kashmir issue to the UN. (ANI)

RSS maintains silence over Jaswant Singh’s expulsion

Shimla, Aug.19 (ANI): The Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS), the parent body of the BJP, is maintaining its silence over the expulsion of Jawant Singh from the party.

But informed sources in the BJP told ANI that the RSS has played a behind the scene role in Jaswant’s exit.

In fact, before starting off for Shimla, BJP president Rajnath Singh met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and discussed some of the recent acts of “indiscipline” committed by Jaswant Singh, including taking a diametrically opposing view to thearty line in his latest book-”Jinnah – India-Partition-Independence”.

Senior BJP leader and political adviser to Rajnath Singh Prabhat Jha told ANI over phone from Shimla that Jaswant Singh was expelled on grounds of indiscipline.

“We have lost ground in the elections. He was such a senior parliamentarian, a member of the core committee and parliament. He should have maintained discipline,” Jha said.

When asked whether the RSS had played a role in Singh expulsion, Jha said: “It is the decision of BJP.”

Earlier in the day, the BJP parliamentary board decided to axe Singh following the release of his book, which eulogises Jinnah and demeans Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Singh had also annoyed the party when he objected to the appointment of L.K. Advani and Arun Jaitley as Leaders of Opposition in the lower and upper houses of parliament.

He distributed a note titled Inaam (prize) and Parinam (result)in the party core group meeting in which he reportedly also asked uncomfortable questions and also expressed disappointment over the elevation of junior leaders like Sushma Swaraj to the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Singh confirmed to reporters in SHimla today that he had distributed this paper. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

IPL and the search for a new Bollywood starlet

It had to happen, and it has happened. When there are three famous Bollywood stars that are franchisee owners of three of the main teams in the IPL, i.e. Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta, a convergence between the films and cricket had to be arrived. And it has arrived. These three super stars have decided that they would be on the hunt for a new Bollywood starlet from amongst the spectators who come to watch the matches of the IPL.

This decision would really send the camerapersons covering the IPL matches in South Africa into a tizzy, as there would be a load of glamour and oomph on display with loads of attitude and array of designer ware. After all, when would the pretty girls from South Africa be they of the Indian origin or the South African origin get a chance to act in a film in Bollywood. As it is South Africa is a venue, which has been quite popular with our Hindi film industry as a preferred locale, and Sanjay Dutt is a star that is the most popular of the Indian film stars in South Africa.

These three stars would have a lot of watching to do, and they have not retracted, but have decided to watch all the matches to find out that elusive face. After all, who does not want to unleash one’s own discovery into the world of Hindi cinema, a protege always warms the cockles of the heart. The person who would be finally selected would be entitled to a role in a Hindi film, 50000 Rands in cash, a business class trip to India and a whole truckload of other prizes. The whole idea behind going in for searches of these kinds is to get a fresh face without the trappings of grooming for a space in Bollywood.

The focus of the search of the face would be to find out if it has an attitude and appearance and the arena of the cricket ground has been chosen as it would indeed be difficult to maintain a demeanor through out a match and natural expression would come into play, and it is this natural expression that would even mesmerize a stranger is being aspired for, through this quest. The trio would select 50 winners from each one of the eight venues hosting IPL matches in South Africa. Those who emerge winner would be shown on the big screen during the second five-minute break.

Each venue would have one finalist, so in all there would be eight finalists from whom one lucky person would be selected and honored at the final match in the Wanderers in Johannesburg on 24 May 2009.

Wonder why services of Mandira Bedi are not being requisitioned for this endeavor, as she literally hangs out amongst the crowd with her mike in hand?

I won’t mind wearing a bikini if required: Anjana Sukhani

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Anjana Sukhani says she is game for bikinis if her role really demands it. Though she has adopted a glamorous persona in films like ‘Golmaal Returns’ and ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, the actress is yet to join the bikini brigade.

‘It’s not in my wish list either. However, there comes a point in your career where you get a film that requires you to shed your inhibitions. Of course, the role that I play has to be of utmost importance – if it is justified for the character to wear a bikini, then I won’t fret about it,’ Anjana told IANS.

Skin show has taken a different dimension in the last few months with actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Minissha Lamba and Amisha Patel getting into the swim wear for their roles. Also with dozens of film and fashion magazines hitting the stands, actresses are making a bee line to be seen on the cover.

‘I’m very sure about the fact that posing seductively for the camera doesn’t really pay. It can’t help you grab work. What eventually matters is how talented you are and whether you can deliver goods on the screen,’ said the actress who had grabbed attention in the Cadbury ad with superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

But being in the glamour world where beauty sells, isn’t that a dicey statement to make?

‘Of course, looking pretty is a valuable thing, but then talent matters as well’, said Anjana. ‘At the end of the day, it is about coming up with a balancing act. Being ‘just pretty’ or ‘just talented’ doesn’t help because one of them working just in isolation can’t take you anywhere. You have to have a good mix of both.’

‘My dad has always said that you should do things that reflect the goal that you want to ultimately meet. If a small step taken by me helps me get closer to that goal, I won’t mind doing that as long as I don’t cross any limits,’ she added.

In that case, how does she look back at her first few steps when she had just started her career with films like ‘Humdum’ (2005) and ‘Sun Zarra’ (2006)?

‘I continue to be emotionally attached to these films because those earlier steps reaffirmed that I existed and paved the way for me to appear in bigger and better films. I didn’t come from a filmy family; nor did I have any supermodel experience that could help me get work. Those were testing times and everything that I decided to do, I had to do it on my own without any godfather supporting me.’

With ‘Jashn’, ‘Tum Milo toh Sahi’ and ‘Allah Ke Banday’ in the pipeline, life is certainly looking up for Anjana.

‘Certainly. I am glad that these are turning out to be good times. I stand by all my decisions in the past and, regardless of whether they have succeeded or failed, I have no regrets,’ she said.

Rishi Kapoor goes for low price sweater and pajama hunting

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
Onlookers in the crowded Lajpat Nagar market in New Delhi was amazed when they realized that none other than Rishi Kapoor was shopping amidst them. To their amusement, the veteran actor wasn’t visiting premium shops and was instead hunting for clothes that carried a dirt cheap price tag on them. Though Delhites were left clueless about the reason behind Rishi Kapoor saving money during shopping, there is a tale attached to this.

The actual reason behind this was that Rishi Kapoor was in the city shooting for his next film DO DOONI CHAAR in which he plays a middle class Mathematics teacher. For this role of his, he didn’t want anything fancy that could potentially go against his character. Hence, to lend a realistic feel, he wanted the clothing to match his character’s persons. In quick time, he himself stepped out on the streets of Lajpat Nagar, one of the busiest markets in Delhi for middle class ‘junta’, and picked up a few clothes for himself.

Confirms Rishi Kapoor who has just finished a marathon shooting schedule for the film, ”I set a clear mandate for me that my clothes won’t be costly at all for DO DOONI CHAAR. What was the point in doing so? How can you make a professor wear expensive clothes when he is barely surviving in his middle class bearings? This is why I thought of going out in the market and pick things up myself from the stands. I made sure that my sweaters and pajamas cost not more than Rs. 200.”

Neetu Singh, who makes a comeback to the film industry with DO DOONI CHAAR and is seen as Rishi Kapoor’s wife in the film also, has a similar tale to tell. ”Even though it is my comeback film, I wasn’t tempted to don a glamorous persona. My wardrobe throughout the film’s duration has also been kept very simple and true to the requirement of the Punjabi housewife character that I play.”

Abhishek Bachchan and Govinda in KAL KISSNE DEKHA?

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
If director Vivek Sharma had his way, he would have made KAL KISSNE DEKHA with Abhishek Bachchan and Govinda. While Abhishek Bachchan was his first choice (before Vivek ventured into making the film with Vashu Bhagnani and hence took over the responsibility of launching Jackky Bhagnani), Govinda was supposed to be roped in for another important part in the film.

Confirms Vivek Sharma, ”It’s true that earlier on I wanted to make this with Abhishek Bachchan. I had this script ready for quite some time and thought that he would be quite a good fit for the role of Nihal Singh in the film. However, every film has its own destiny. Though the film didn’t start with Abhishek, I found Vashu (Bhagnani) to be quite interested in the script and we soon began work with Jackky.”

Casting of Govinda has its own tale to tell. Apparently in KAL KISSNE DEKHA, there is an interesting character that goes by the name of Kaalicharan Don. For this particular part, Vivek believed that Govinda would be the best fit.

Smiles Vivek, ”There were quite a few actors that I had in my mind. We finally sat down with the list of actors and started meeting them one after another. However, there was something amiss. I actually wanted Govindaji to play the role of Kaalicharan. He would have been just the perfect fit for the role. I met him during IIFA awards and he had agreed to do this role also.”

So what went wrong?

”Well, all I can say is that somehow it didn’t happen the way I had thought. We had to resume our search for the man who would play Kaalicharan don. Now that’s a very interesting character in the film, but I won’t reveal who is playing that part. Well, at least for now! So wait and watch”, concludes Vivek with promise of the mystery to be revealed in time to come.

Nagesh’s YEH HAUSLA: Camera at centre stage again!

His first big budget venture, 8×10 TASVEER, may have flopped but that has not dampened Nagesh Kukunoor’s ‘hausla’ (courage based on confidence) as he has now pinned all hopes on his latest film, YEH HAUSLA. Like any other seasoned director he has moved on, citing 8×10 TAVEER as a great learning experience.

There is a lot riding on Nagesh’s YEH HAUSLA. For start, it has the sexy bombshell Samira Reddy, in the role of a rustic woman. Our patrons may recall that it was we who had brought you the news about the dusky beauty being offered the role of a lifetime by Nagesh and the subsequent tough outdoor shooting schedule in. Those who have seen the rushes of the film are of the view that Samira has done a terrific job in the film, a la Smita Patil and it would help establish Samira as an actress of substance and shed her item girl image.

However, coming back to why we are here for in the first place. Just a few months back we had brought you the news about camera being the real hero of Neil Nitin Mukesh’s AA DEKHEN ZARA. And even in Nagesh’s 8×10 TASVEER, the camera, through its pictures played a very important part in the film. Well, once again a movie camera plays a pivotal role in Nagesh Kukunoor’s next, YEH HAUSLA. But readers may not be alarmed, the camera in Nagesh’s film does not help see the future, though it certainly improves the present of the people by becoming their ally via a documentary shot by them!

Well, Nagesh keep up that ‘hausla’ and all the best!

Rohit Roy reprises Big B’s role in ‘Abhimaan’ adaptation

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) Actor-director Rohit Roy is all set to step into Amitabh Bachchan’s shoes for the Bengali adaptation of 1973 hit film ‘Abhimaan’, best remembered for its songs like ‘Teri bindiya re’ and superlative performances by the Big B and Jaya Bachchan.

‘I’m doing a major project called ‘Pa Ma Ga Re Sa’, which is a modern musical love story. It will be my first Bengali film and it is special because it is based on ‘Abhimaan’. It is basically an adaptation of the film,’ Rohit told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

‘The film has Gauri Karnik, who was seen in ‘Sur’ before. And former Miss India (Earth) Reshmi Ghosh will be seen as the other woman. It is being directed by Surajit Dhar,’ he added.

The first schedule of the film has already been shot and Rohit, who has recently stepped in as the host of the third season of TV dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa’, will soon head to Kolkata to shoot a few more scenes of it.

Rohit has joined ‘Jhalak…’ midway and is co-hosting the show with TV actress Shweta Tiwari.

‘This show is very close to my heart. I watched the first season, hosted the second and now I’m hosting the third mid-way. I think even the producers have grown to like me and I’m really excited to be back on the host’s seat,’ he said.

On the Bollywood front, the actor has a bouquet of films like ‘Mittal Vs Mittal’, ‘Apartment’ and ‘Alibaug’ in his kitty. And the actor, who had made his first stint with the arclights with popular TV show ‘Swabhimaan’, is excited about essaying different roles in each of these movies.

‘In ‘Mittal Vs Mittal’, I’m playing an abusive husband to Rituparna Sengupta, in Jagmohan Mundra’s ‘Apartment’, I’m playing a very jovial, guy-next-door sort of a role and in ‘Alibaug’, my role is of a doctor who cheats on his wife. As an actor, I can’t draw a line and decide a set kind of roles that I want to do, I have to be diverse and I am enjoying doing it,’ said Rohit, who also featured in hit film ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’.

Besides this, he is also toying with the idea of scripting his next directorial venture, which will be a remake of Basu Chatterjee’s 1981 classic ‘Shaukeen’.

Chatterjee’s film, about the adventures of three old men in Goa, starred Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal, but Rohit’s ‘grand wishlist’ for the cast of his ‘glamorous’ version of the film includes Rishi Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Boman Irani.

‘We are trying to finish the scripting of this mad comedy. Though the idea of the film will be based on ‘Shaukeen’, the reason for their adventures would change and the setting would be more glamorous – maybe they would go to Las Vegas instead of Goa.

‘As for the cast, I hope these people in my wish list would want to work in the film after hearing the script,’ said Rohit.

US envoy meets Egyptian president as part of Middle East tour

Cairo- US special envoy George Mitchell is holding talks with Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak on Saturday in Cairo as part of his Middle East tour to promote peace in the region.

Mitchell arrived in Cairo on Friday night, coming from Israel and the Palestinian territories, and met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

After the meeting Mitchell praised the Egyptian role in establishing peace in the Middle East and told reporters that the US was committed to “comprehensive peace” in the region.

Mitchell conveyed a similar message in Ramallah on Friday, that President Barack Obama is committed to the establishment of a sovereign, independent Palestinian state and regards this as a “national interest” of the US.

“This conflict has gone on for far too long. The people of this region should no longer have to wait for the just peace,” Mitchell said.

In Israel, Mitchell told officials that Obama administration’s commitment to Israeli security, but also to a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.

The new Israeli government has refused to openly endorse a two-state solution to the conflict.

The Middle East tour, the first since the new government of hardline premier Benjamin Netanyahu took office last month, will also take Mitchell to the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, the Hamas government of the Gaza Strip on Saturday called on the Obama administration to take a clear position regarding Israeli settlement activities.

Taher al-Nounou, a spokesman for the deposed government, said that Israel “continues its aggressive campaign in the occupied Jerusalem to make al-Aqsa mosque Jewish.”

Settlement activity in Jerusalem, and the West Bank, and the restrictions on the Palestinian prisoners were being conducted “while the US envoy George Mitchell is visiting the region,” according to Hamas spokesman Taher al-Nounou. (dpa)

Danny’s award winning film FROZEN set for release

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
Ready for last two years, FROZEN will finally release in theaters on 1st May. Current stand off between producers and multiplexes has resulted in quite a few films coming out of cold storage and FROZEN is one of them.

Starring Danny Denzongpa in the lead who plays the role of ‘Karma’, the film depicts the life of a family whose dream like existence is interrupted by inevitable odds, one after the other. Made in Hindi and Ladakhi, the film was shot at an average height of 12000 feet above sea level in Ladakh, the eastern part of Jammu and Kashmir, bordering China.

Produced and directed by Shivajee Chandrabhushan, the film has received 18 highly acclaimed awards. Not just that, it has also toured 30 international film festivals over the period of time and would now be seeing a release in India. Interestingly, the film would be seeing a staggered release. While in Mumbai the film will be screened beginning 1st May, in other cities it would arrive on later dates.

After a few forgettable outings in films like KARZZZZ, CHAMKU and BIG BROTHER, one hopes that Danny has sunk his teeth into something really worthwhile in FROZEN where he plays a central protagonist. Some of the other films in which Danny would be seen in months to come are ACID FACTORY, TEEN PATTI and LUCK.

Coming back to FROZEN, the film also stars Shilpa Shukla of CHAK DE INDIA fame. Others in the case comprise of Yashpal Sharma, Raj Zutshi, Aamir Bashir, Shakeel Khan and Denzil Smith.

Arshad sports a dark look for ISHQIYAN

Arshad Warsi perhaps for the first time is experimenting with his looks for any film. For Vishal Bharadwaj’s forthcoming production, ISHQIYAN being directed by Abhishek Chaubey Arshad shall be seen in a role that he has never attempted before.

Our unit sources reveal that since he plays a guy of the streets he has been made to look suitably dark. So therefore whenever Arshad arrives on the film sets every morning, hours are spent painting Arshad Warsi’s torso black. He may not be in his best looking appearance in this film, but neither was Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bharadwaj’s OMKARA and yet he went on to win accolades and awards for his role in the film. Arshad is presumably aiming for the same. The film also stars beautiful Vidya Balan and talented Naseeruddin Shah.

Sources also further reveal that, “Arshad’s stunning performance in the film will be a surprise package for the audience and his chemistry with co-star Vidya is already being talked about. Reportedly both share a few intimate scenes in the film which are suppose to be aesthetically shot. Vidya plays a con-woman in the film who out masters the uncle nephew duo of Naseer and Arshad in the film. The film is slated for a year end release.”

Payal Rohatgi: Ticket to Hollywood

Steven Baker, Bollywood Trade News Network
Aishwarya Rai has done it, Frieda Pinto is doing it, and now Payal Rohatgi is set to become the latest Indian export to Hollywood. The former Big Boss contestant’s route from B-grade flicks to mainstream success has not been easy.

“I did not have anybody to guide me on what kind of films I should look at, and I goofed up in that big time,” says Payal. “The journey for me was very difficult but I worked on myself to be stronger as an actor and rejected many movies.”

This included turning down Yash Raj Productions offer of a part in TASHAN. Payal explains, “The role was not the kind I was willing to do, but I would definitely like to work with them in the future- and I know I will.”

The 36 CHINA TOWN and CORPORATE star recently wowed the crowd when she made a presence at this year’s Filmfare Awards. The actor, whose latest release DIL KABADDI saw her paired opposite Irrfan Khan, is buoyant about her career at home and abroad.

Hoping to follow her co-star’s overseas success, Payal says, “SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE has been a great achievement,” adding, “It has opened the doors of Hollywood for Indian cinema.” She reveals, “My fans will see me in a lot of different roles which I will start working on soon. There are a couple of big things lined up including a Hollywood project.”

Karan Johar experiments with best pals SRK-Kajol!

Karan Johar’s next directorial venture, MY NAME IS KHAN, is certainly one of the most awaited films of the year and the reason for that is the teaming up of Karan-SRK-Kajol after a gap of almost 8 years. The trio has hundred percent success record with blockbuster hits like KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM. Both the films were hardcore entertainers and Shah Rukh Khan played the eternal lover boy to the hilt, thus becoming the darling of countless female fans. And Kajol too complemented SRK with her energetic, chirpy girly charm, even though she essayed the role of a mother in K3G (in the second half).

However, those who are waiting for a repeat of the same Rahul-Anjali type roles from SRK and Kajol may be in for a disappointment as Karan Johar has stated quite clearly that this film certainly treads a different path and he is going to experiment with both Shah Rukh and Kajol. But he is supremely confident that the audience would love the way he has presented Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in MNIK, adding that even though he is experimenting with their image and roles, the two being such terrific actors would surely make the audience fall in love with them over and over again. He adds that Shah Rukh and Kajol are his best friends and he is their biggest admirer too and hopes that he would do justice to the immense talent that they possess and thus make the invincible and the most popular ‘jodi’ successful for the third time in a row.

While on MY NAME IS KHAN, after the New York schedule, the film was shot extensively at Mumbai’s Filmistan studio from the 20th-24th March and once again on the 30th of the same month.

The Recession Takes its Toll on Karnik as Well

The recession seems to be claiming its victims everywhere and the film industry has not been spared. One of the many victims is director Samir Karnik, of Heroes fames. The director was planning on starting his next film, Formula 44, a much more ambitious project than this previous ones, bit has now had to put his plans on hold.

It seems that Karnik has now resigned himself to shooting some of the IPL matches in South Africa at the request of good friend Preity Zinta. The director is also planning to look into ad films as well to tide over the bad times. Where Formula 44 is concerned, the director made the mistake of jumping the gun and announcing his cast before even receiving a confirmation from them. He now says that it was more like a wishlist than anything else. One of the names he had announced was that of actor Ajay Devgan, who has thankfully not reacted adversely and has even agreed to consider a role in the film. The only confirmation that Katrnik has is Bobby Deol, as of now. So with little in his hands right now, it seems Karnik is trying to make the best of what he has and head to South Africa.

Jaya Bachchan, the Actress Strikes Back!

In the midst of all the hectic political activities, Mrs Jaya Bachchan, senior leader of the Samajwadi Party took a break and started shooting for a new film which went on the floor on her birthday on April 9.

Jaya who was last seen in a major role in Karan Johar’s ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ was caught in a major controversy in politics in UP, was approached by Revathy Rao, a filmmaker from the South who made Mrs Bachchan realize that it was only she (Mrs Bachchan) who could play what she called ‘the role of a lifetime for any actress anywhere’. The senior actress was so carried away by the script that the actress in her totally took charge of the politician in her. At a time when her Party needed her most to campaign for it all over the country as she was its star campaigner, she convinced her senior leaders and found the time to shoot for Revathy’s film. The film which has Mrs Bachchan as the central character, is the story about a woman who fights against every wrong in the system, society and the country. She started shooting for the film at Madh Island, she said, ‘An actress is always an actress and when there is a temptation like this film and role I have been offered a true actress can just not say no to it. I have been out of touch for quite some time because of my busy schedule as a politician but I am sure and confident that I will manage to come up with a performance that will be remembered. I hope I manage because otherwise the actress in me will never forgive me because after all I am all that I am because I was an actress first.’

The film which will be shot in one schedule also has Raveena Tandon who also makes a comeback and Ritesh Deshmukh in other key roles. Keep watching this space for more details about this new adventure in the career of one of the most outstanding actresses of the country.

The choice of location and some new suggestions from India

Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

8×10 TASVEER apart from the novelty of interpreting the narrative through the photographs is also characterized by some stunning visuals of locales of Canada that set the tone of the film in the beginning. It is altogether a different issue that the film after setting the tone through the locales meanders along. As a matter of fact the choice of locations play a very important role in setting the tone of the film and no wonder the producers and the directors are at their wits end to select the locations to mesmerize and entice the audience to come back repeatedly into the cinema halls. After all it is the grandeur of the locale that is the initiating factor in setting the tone and tenor of the film.

It has also been observed that if the locations are chosen from India the ability to identify with the location is stronger than if it is a foreign country. RANG DE BASANTI and JAB WE MET are prime examples of the choice of Indian locations that set the tone for the movie. If the producer is able to bring the spectacle of the unknown India within the reach of the audience in the cinema hall then he has won half the battle. But the problem is of searching the locations.

At a time when the industry is virtually shutdown as the films are not releasing, it presents an opportune moment to suggest some of the locations that the cinema fans may be introduced to. It indeed is amazing that even after such a long time the Taj Mahal Hotel of Mumbai has not figured prominently as a back drop in any film. Now that a massive rebuilding exercise is being undertaken to build the heritage block, may be the film fraternity could come forward and used the magnificent facade of Taj as a location. After all, Taj Mahal Hotel along with the Trident and the Oberoi has been conferred with the PRIDE OF INDIA, under the National Tourism Awards for 2007.

MahaParinirvan Express is the train that covers whole of the Buddhist circuit and it has been awarded the most innovative tourism project by the government of India. A film made on the live of Buddha can be shot through the train route covered by this train, or for that matter a love story can also be shot. It was in JOHNY MERA NAAM that the backdrop of Buddhist circuit was used by Dev Anand and it is height time it is revisited again as Buddhism as a religion has great popularity internationally, and if a film is shot covering these spots it sure is going to catch the eye of foreign viewers as well. May be a Richard Gere and a Shilpa Shetty love story to begin with…

While Goa has featured in score of films, how many of he producers are aware about the fact that Karmali Railway Station at Old Goa has been cited with the award of ‘ best tourist friendly railway station’ by the GOI, and should it not for this reason feature in one of the films that is on the drawing board stage. Orissa as a state has yet to be featured with prominence in a Hindi film and may be the time for it has come.

Locations for their sheer novelty dot the landscape of the country, and there is no need to venture outside India, but these locations should be used to market the potential of the country as a tourism destination of its own kind, and if the film industry initiates the process it would ad one more feather in its crown as an industry whose heart beats and vibrates for the betterment of the country.
