Survey: One in 10 Germans want to live forever

Bielefeld, Germany – Only one out of 10 Germans desire eternal life, according to a survey of 1,002 people conducted in January by the opinion research company Emnid based in Bielefeld, Germany.

The survey also showed that only 2 per cent of those questioned would like to live to be 150 or 300 years old, while 8 per cent desire a life span of 110 years. Fifty-six per cent would like to live to be 90 years old, and 16 per cent said they would be satisfied with 70 years.

How long people want to live apparently is dependent on age: 20 per cent of the participants in the survey between the ages of 14 and 20 said they wanted to live forever. Among people in the middle age group the percentage saying they wanted eternal life sank to 10 per cent, while in the over-60 group it was 3 per cent.

The differences are apparently due to concerns about illness and other problems that increase with age, according to April edition of Reader’s Digest, which commissioned the survey. (dpa)

Rounding off at fourth and fifth position are Philips 21:9 Cinema LCD TV and the state of the art satellite navigation system TomTom Go 940 LIVE, respectively.

Kate Winslet had panic attack a month before O-night

Washington, February 25 (ANI): An anxiety-stricken Kate Winslet had a panic attack a month before the Academy Awards.

The 33-year-old finally won the gong, after five previous nominations, for her portrayal of a German woman with a secret Nazi past in the romantic drama “The Reader” this year.

The actress confessed making a desperate call to her sister after suffering the jitters.

“I didn’t know what it was. It was a little like when your water (breaks), and you think, ‘Did I just pee a bit, or is this it?’” Contactmusic quoted her as telling Time magazine.

“I called my sister and said, ‘I can’t breathe, and I feel like I’ve got a brick on my chest and I’m seeing funny, and it sounds like everyone’s talking to me in Hebrew.’

“She said, ‘Yeah, that’s a panic attack,’” she added. (ANI)

Kate Winslet likens her Oscar to mum’s cooking prize

Washington, February 25 (ANI): Kate Winslet likened her Best Actress Oscar to her mum’s victory in a pickling competition at a local pub in Britain.

After having been nominated five times earlier, the actress finally won the gong for her portrayal of a German woman with a secret Nazi past in the romantic drama “The Reader”.

Speaking after the Academy Awards, the ‘Titanic’ star added her win to her family’s previous accolade at The Retreat in Reading that saw her mum taking home a bottle of vodka in place of a coveted statuette.

“My mum won a pickled onion competition in the local pub just before Christmas and the Reading Evening Post sent me a picture of her holding her jar,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“Well, Reading Evening Post, here’s your next Winslet picture!” she added.

Kate also dominated this season with two Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild award, a British BAFTA and a handful of U.S. critics awards. (ANI)

Kate Winslet thronged by well-wishers at Vanity Fair bash

New York, Feb 25 (ANI): After winning the Best Actress gong at the Academy Awards, British actress Kate Winslet got so much attention from her well-wishers at the Vanity Fair post-Oscar bash that her husband Sam Mendes took about half-an-hour to reach her.

So many people crowded ‘The Reader’ star that her hubby Mendes had to wait nearly 30 minutes, before he could bring her to their table.

Winslet’s mum predicted Streep would win Best Actress Oscar

Washington, February 24 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet was sure that Meryl Streep would defeat her to clinch the Best Actress Oscar because her own mother, Sally, thought so.

What made Winslet’s mother to think this way was the fact that Streep has received 15 Academy Award nominations, more than any other actor or actress in the history of the prize giving, but has only won two statuettes.

“I was a bit worried! At the last minute, I thought Meryl might get it. She has had so many nominations but she only won two,” the Contactmusic quoted Sally as saying.

Telling about how she was felling before the ceremony, Winslet said that she was terrified that she would once again have to return home empty-handed.

The actress said that she just could not believe it when she was declared the winner.

“I honestly didn’t expect it. When you’re in a category with Meryl Streep, you really just think, ‘Oh well. She’s Meryl Streep! She’s Meryl!’ It’s not supposed to be possible,” she said.

Winslet, named Best Actress for her role in The Reader on Sunday, took home the prestigious prize for the first time despite five nominations under her belt. (ANI)

Kate Winslet acting normal to beat anxiety before the Oscars

London, Feb 21 (ANI): Hollywood actress Kate Winslet, who has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best actress category for ‘The Reader’, has revealed that she is calming her nerves before the award ceremony by leading a normal life.

The ‘Hamlet’ actress, who has been nominated five times for an Academy award, but has never won any, says that she has been keeping herself busy by doing her household chores to beat the pre-Oscar anxiety.

“I have been doing all the normal things like making shepherd’s pie and taking the kids to school,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

While Kate is pretty nervous about the award ceremony, she has been taking suggestions for her acceptance speech, if she wins.

But the sweetest advice came from her son, who just told her to keep it simple and utter her gratitude to everybody, who helped her reach here.

“‘I think you should say thank you to everybody for helping me.’ Which I thought was so sweet,” Kate said about her son’s advice.

Meanwhile, Kate has also said that she would like to wear something comfortable to the event, as she doesn’t want to be in discomfort at the special moment.

“There’s no way I could walk out of the door in something that was going to be digging into my waist and that was so super-figure-hugging-tight that you can’t visit the lavatory in it. I just can’t be doing with all that. It’s like torture, and if you are in pain then you can’t enjoy the moment,” Kate said. (ANI)

‘Leaked’ Oscar winners list is ‘complete fraud’, says rep

Melbourne, Feb 20 (ANI): A leaked document purportedly listing the ‘winners’ of this weekend’s Academy Awards is nothing more than a hoax, according to an Oscars spokeswoman.

Papers alleging to be the complete list of Oscar winners have been published on the Internet.

The authentic-looking document, which seems to have been scanned in, has an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences letterhead and what looks like the signature of the Academy’s president, Sid Ganis.

“This is the final list of winners of the 81st Annual Academy Awards. As always, please treat this information with extreme care,” News.com.au quoted the document, as stating.

According to the list, Kate Winslet has won best actress gong for ‘The Reader’ and Mickey Rourke has bagged best actor award for ‘The Wrestler’.

Heath Ledger has been named best supporting actor for ‘The Dark Knight’ and Amy Adams has won best supporting actress gong for ‘Doubt’.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has been named the best film while its director Danny Boyle has honoured with best director award.

However, an Academy Awards rep has branded the list a ‘complete fraud’ and has said that the Oscar votes are still being counted.

“The document is a complete fraud,” Oscars spokesperson Leslie Unger said.

“PricewaterhouseCoopers is still counting the ballots and there are only two people there who will know the complete list of winners in advance of the envelopes being opened during the ceremony.

“The Academy’s president is not advised of the winners in advance and no such list is created,” Unger added. (ANI)

Winslet’s The Reader faces renewed Jewish criticism in the run-up to Oscars

London, February 18 (ANI): In the run-up to the Oscar Awards, British actress Kate Winslet is reported to be facing renewed criticism from the Jewish community over her controversial role as a Nazi in the Holocaust film The Reader.

The film, based on Bernhard Schlink’s best-selling novel of the same name, has been hit by accusations of “Holocaust revisionism”.

It features Winslet as Hanna Schmitz, a former concentration camp guard who stood by as 300 prisoners met their death in a burning church.

At her war crimes trial, she accepts a longer prison sentence than her co-accused rather than admit that she is illiterate.

“Essentially, it takes a woman who serves in, is responsible for, is complicit in, you pick the words, in the deaths of at least 300 Jews – and her big secret shame is that she’s illiterate,” the Telegraph quoted Mark Weitzman, head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, as telling the New York Post.

The newspaper suggests that film critics are divided whether or not the best actress Oscar should go to Winslet.

The supporters of rival films are also said to have emailed Jewish members of the Academy to ruin The Reader’s chances.

Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Gabrielle Burton, though accepts that the film was “flawlessly crafted” with fine performances, has written on the Huffington Post website that the movie left her feeling “uncomfortable, disturbed and ultimately deeply troubled”.

The Reader is “too close to that scary genre ‘Holocaust palatable’: Hanna Schmitz not quite the SS guard with a heart of gold, but the SS guard pitied for her illiteracy, rather than six million Jews lamented for their loss,” Burton says.

“I’m all for films that upset and disturb people, but that’s not what this film was going for. It was going for Academy Awards. If The Reader weren’t so beautifully made, and so aggressively marketed by (studio boss) Harvey Weinstein who’s not really thinking deeply on this one, it might not matter so much. But in these times where a Pope can reinstate a Bishop who preaches that the Holocaust never happened, it matters greatly.

“It matters because Kate Winslet’s fine acting and lush body obscure Hanna’s immorality. It matters because this movie will win a lot of awards and more people will see it. And it matters because art matters, even if it didn’t move Hanna Schmitz beyond her easy tears,” Burton added.

Critic Roger Ebert, however, praised the film and argued that it was more than a ‘Holocaust movie’.

Writing on his Chicago Sun-Times blog, Ebert said: “The Reader isn’t about the Holocaust. It’s about not speaking when you know you should… Would you have defied the Nazis? Would I have? There were a lot of people who did. Most people did not. There is an old saying: There, but for the grace of God, go I.” (ANI)

Kate Winslet has no time for exercise

Washington, Feb 18 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet credits her toned physique to “a wing and a prayer”, insisting she’s “too busy” to even think about exercising.

The Oscar nominee, who has struggled with weight since she was a teenager, insists she hasn’t been slimming down for the big ceremony.

When asked if she was dieting, Winslet said, “N.O. (I) absolutely do not. I’m very sort of relaxed and vocal about these things. I have not done a stitch of exercise since October. I literally have not had the time.”

“I’m just going to eat normally, I’m not going to make cuts.

“If I’m keeping it together it’s by a wing and a prayer. I just want to enjoy this,” she added.

The 33-year-old actress is winning accolades for her role in The Reader, and is tipped to win the Best actress at the Oscars.

She has already scooped two awards in Golden Globes and walked away with Best actress gong at the Baftas. (ANI)

Slumdog Millionaire’ at 1:12 odds of winning ‘Best Picture’ Oscar

New York, Feb 16 (ANI): Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is at 1:12 odds of winning the Best Picture award at this year’s Oscars, according to an expert.

According to Danny Sheridan, director Boyle is also likely to walk away with the Best Director gong with 1:10 odds of winning, reports the New York Post.

The film, which tracks the story of an 18-year-old slum boy from rags to riches, has already triumphed the Golden Globes and Baftas, and has been nominated in 10 categories at the Oscars.

While the ‘The Wrestler’ star is a 5:7 odds of winning Penn is at 7:5 for Milk. (ANI)

Nazi role recoil may scupper Kate Winslet’s Oscar dreams

London, January 14 (ANI): Hollywood’s recoil over Kate Winslet’s controversial Nazi role in “The Reader” may put the actress’ Oscar dreams in jeopardy.

In the Golden Globe winning film, Kate stars as Hanna Schmitz, who keeps her past as a concentration camp guard under wraps while she has an affair with a teenage boy half her age.

While the ‘Titianic’ star reportedly held a strong chance to bag the award for the Best Actress category for ‘Revolutionary Road’, some film critics see little or no hope in the Holocaust drama winning the coveted statuette on February 22.

“Kate Winslet portrays a woman who dispatched Jews to gas chambers and doesn’t seem obviously repentant later when she’s tried in court. How can anyone, especially Jewish Oscar voters, embrace that?” the Telegraph quoted one LA times writer as saying.

Manohla Dargis of the New York Times, referred as one of the most influential film critics in the US, added: “You have to wonder who, exactly, wants or perhaps needs to see another movie about the Holocaust that embalms its horrors with artfully spilled tears and asks us to pity a death-camp guard.

“Mostly it involves Kate Winslet, her taut belly and limbs gleaming under the caressing light, deflowering a very surprised-looking teenage boy”.

Another esteemed critic, Charlie Finch, wrote: “What is especially repellent about The Reader is the use of Kate Winslet’s nubile body to create sympathy for a repellent character.” (ANI)

Kate Winslet feared she lacked acting ‘chops’ for The Reader role

Washington, Feb 12 (ANI): Hollywood actress Kate Winslet feared that she was not capable enough to pull off her Oscar nominated role in The Reader.

The 33-year-old actress won over critics with her role of a Nazi concentration camp guard who has an affair with a 15-year-old boy.

Her efforts have already been recognised by BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards, and the actress is tipped to win the Best actress gong at the Academy Awards.

Winslet admits she feared the prospect of playing a character so complex.

“At first it was absolutely terrifying, I had nothing from my own life that I could compare with her. I thought, ‘Do I have the chops?’ Then I was like, ‘Kate, stop fannying (messing) around’,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“Even if I didn’t like her, I had to understand her,” she added.

The Titanic star, who struggled with weight issues during childhood, admits that she loves to dress up for award functions as she gets the chance to wear nice gowns on the red carpets.

“My mother would get me to wear a pink puffball hand-me-down skirt that had to be let out because I was considerably stockier than my sister. So I never felt great dressing up. Now I just want to enjoy it,” she said. (ANI)

Melbourne, Feb 9 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet says that she has learnt to love her bum.

The 33-year-old star, who has struggled with her weight since she was a teen, said that she has learnt to like the “blemishes” she exposes in The Reader’s controversial nude scenes.

“I don’t know a single woman who doesn’t stand up and check the tush before she walks out the door,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Winslet as saying.

“I’ve decided I’m going to start loving my backside because I don’t know anyone who does that. And I want to be able to say to my daughter: ‘I love this,’ ” she added.
