Mumbai, April 11 (IANS) After playing the ‘middle’ Jamal in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, Tanay Cheda is set to star in ‘My Name Is Khan’ in which his grownup version will be essayed by no less than Shah Rukh Khan.
But the 12-year-old boy who belongs to a business family is quite clear about one thing – he is not signing any more films as he wants to concentrate on studies.
‘In Karan Johar’s ‘My Name Is Khan’, I play the childhood portions of Shah Rukh Khan’s role. It’s a small role and a very important film. And it will be shot during my holidays,’ Cheda told IANS.
‘Except ‘My Name Is Khan’, my parents have decided to let me concentrate on my studies.’ The young star feels he has had his share of fame and recognition, so after completing the film he won’t sign any more.
Tanay, who is shifting from his current school Campion in Colaba to the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra, has to sit for his elocution exams at Trinity College in London.
‘But coping with studies is no problem. All my teachers have been very cooperative. Half of ‘Slumdog…’ was shot during my vacations,’ Tanay told IANS.
He played Darsheel Safari’s best friend in ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and says Karan Johar decided to cast him as young Shah Rukh after watching the Oscar winning rags-to-riches drama.
He also added that he got the role of younger Jamal in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ by chance.
‘I couldn’t go to the auditions. But eight months later they came to my school for auditions. By chance I got the role. They had to work a lot on my physical appearance to make me look compatible with Ayush, who played the youngest Jamal.
‘They straightened my curly hair, etc. Also they had to darken all three who played Jamal (Ayush, Tanay and Dev Patel) to look like we were constantly exposed to the sun. My makeup used to take 90 minutes every day,’ he said.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ got critical acclaim and triumphed at all international festival, including the Oscars where it bagged eight golden statuettes.
‘My family and friends are very proud of me. It feels really good. For my friends, I’m still the same Tanay,’ he said.
He is also very thrilled by his visit to the Oscars ceremony. ‘I’m a movie freak. When I walked the red carpet I could recognize everyone who walked by,’ he added.
Tanay says acting is a hobby.
‘Right now I just want to enjoy my childhood. I’m passionate about football. And I love to write. I’ve lots of stories to tell. As far as movies are concerned, my next release is ‘Mustang Mama’ where Ruslaan Mumtaz and I play mama-bhanja. I know another ‘Slumdog…’ may not happen. But like my dialogue in the film goes, it’s all about destiny.’
He completely dismisses stories of replacing Darsheel in Anil Monga’s ‘Padduram’. ‘I don’t know where that came from. I haven’t said yes to any such film,’ Tanay said.

Legendary Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh said that it was beyond his reasoning as to why the Jai Ho song in Slumdog Millionaire won two Oscars. The singer voiced his opinion during the launch of his album Inteha.
He added that though he is happy that India has won the Oscars, he could not understand on what basis the song was considered for the Oscars.
The album was released by sitarist Anoushka Shankar 35000 ft above sea level. There are eight songs in the album, which are mainly romantic.
Of course there are some songs on life and philosophy too, adds a source.

London, March 8 (ANI): Freida Pinto is yet to believe she has landed the Hollywood jackpot after starring in Danny Boyle’s mega hit ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
The 24-year-old, who hails from the city of Mumbai, revealed she kept pinching herself to believe the astonishing success of the film which bagged eight Oscars, seven BAFTAs and four Golden Globes.
Freida recently landed herself a role in Woody Allen’s new movie while being a favourite amongst the designers running to dress her.
She was also said to have Kate Winslet’s LA agent on her speed dial while boasting of having ear of the top actress herself, Angelina Jolie.
But the actress, who has been rumoured to have sparks flying with her 6-year-junior co-star Dev Patel, insisted she was yet to be struck by stardom and was far from believing that her showbiz dreams had come true.
“It’s been six months and nothing has sunk in yet,” News of the World quoted her as saying at the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills.
“I’m still the same sensitive and simple girl who always dreamed about becoming an actress.
“The only thing that’s changed is that the girl walking around in jeans and tees has now taken to wearing designer dresses,” she added.
Her former fiancé Rohan Antao had claimed that Freida not only compelled him to stay mum about their engagement, for the benefit of the movie, but also snubbed him to be with her onscreen lover.
Dumped Antao blamed the film and Dev for putting an end to his relationship with the actress.(ANI)

London, March 7 (ANI): The company that financed low-budgeted but millions grossing film Slumdog Millionaire may fall victim to recession which could jeopardise similar films in future, according to a senior member of the business.
As per Sue Bruce-Smith, Film4’s head of commercial development, the corporation was thriving on a 60 per cent chance of making it through against the global economic crunch.
Sue revealed that if Film4 succumbed to the crisis, then that may put an end to flicks such as Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire that has allegedly raked in 200 millions dollars so far, along with bagging eight Oscars.
Sue further expressed concern over the fate of the firm, which had dipped its budget up to 20 per cent after being hit by the slump.
“I think there is a 60/40 chance we will still be around but we need everybody’s support to make sure it’s a better chance than that,” Sky News quoted her as saying.
“The concern is if you don’t have those people working at the edges, people prepared to take those risks, who are able to give UK talent the freedom to experiment, you end up with frankly generic, formulaic films trying desperately and not necessarily succeeding to make bucks,” she said.
John Woodward, from the UK Film Council, further added to the predictions of a tough year ahead.
He said: “This year is very much a game of two halves.
“If you are working at the big studio based films, the Harry Potters of this world, you are looking to a good year due to the exchange rate, tax breaks, the skills of British people employed making films.
“I think that side will be pretty good.
“The other side of the coin is independently financed films and I think they are going to have a much tougher year.” (ANI)

London, Mar 7 (ANI): Even with its huge success, the movie Slumdog Millionaire has not been able to make a difference in the lives of its stars, who were seen back at the same place they were before – the slums.
Child star Azharuddin Ismail still stays in a plastic-sheet shack, which is close to a fetid stream of raw sewage, and even after the glitzy Oscars ceremony, he and his co-star Rubina Ali, nine, still live in the putrid stench and squalor of their Mumbai slum home.
Azharuddin Ismail, or Azhar as his friends call him, shares the ramshackle 4ft by 8ft home of blue and yellow plastic sheets with his family, and dines on cow’s milk and pao, a type of soft bread.
He and his father Mohammed Ismail and mum Shameen sleep on a dirt-strewn floor on grimy blankets, and for warmth, they would huddle close to one another.
And their toilet, shared by hundreds of others, is the filthy stream running behind the shack, clogged with sewage and stinking household waste.
It is hardly the life of a movie star, and Azhar, who has been described, as a “flower growing in the muck” of the slums by his dad, is eager to get out.
“I won’t be in the slum for ever. I want to be an actor,” the Sun quoted him as saying. (ANI)

London, Mar 3 (ANI): It seems Sienna Miller is trying to mend the damage her affair with married actor Balthazar Getty has done to her Hollywood career.
The 27-year-old actress attended several charity bashes over the recent Oscars weekend, including the Montblanc Signature for Good charity initiative at Paramount Studios.
Although, the Factory Girl is press-shy, she went out of her way to speak graciously to journalists.
She also attended another bash later that night where the actress appeared to be sweet and light as she chatted to all.
“Sienna was doing lots of mingling. She was really working the room at both parties,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.
“She stopped to talk to almost everyone, whether she knew them or not. She stopped Robert De Niro and sweetly asked him for a cigarette even though she’d not met him before.
“Sienna is aware of the damage her on-off romance with Getty has done to her standing in Hollywood.
“Getty’s wife Rosetta is well-respected and has lots of friends in the industry so Sienna has many bridges to build,” the source added. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): Actress Jennifer Aniston and model Heidi Klum were judged to have had a bad hairdo at the recent Academy Awards.
Beverly Hills hairstylist Tina Dizon of the famed Juan Florentino Salon gave her opinion about the two.
“Aniston’s braid, it was a little outdated and casual. She’s such a beautiful person that I think it’s time she should break away from the safety of her hair,” Fox News quoted her as saying.
“And Heidi Klum is usually always a knock out, but her hairstyle was a little too slick, which made her hair colour too obvious – too light in front and the dark and light of her colours are too noticeable,” she stated.
As per Dizon, the two were not the only ones, as Melissa George, Lisa Rinna and Mickey Rourke also sported hairdos that were not fashionable. (ANI)

The stunner was offered a place at the glitzy Los Angeles event on 22 February (09), but she decided not to attend, reports The Daily Express.

London, Feb 28 (ANI): ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child star Azharuddin had a rather painful homecoming after attending the Oscars, for the boy was beaten up by his father just because he wanted to have some rest.
Mohammed Ismail slapped and kicked his 10-year-old son in front of shocked neighbours and passers-by soon after he flew back to India from Los Angeles, where he and his other young co-stars watched as their movie picked up eight Oscars.
Azharuddin, who plays young hero Jamal, got tears in the eyes and ran back inside his home, cowering and begging his father to stop while trying to hide in a corner.
The young star had been given the day off school after his long flight and wanted to take rest, but his father wanted to show him off outside their home.
And when the boy didn’t agree, the 45-year-old father, who is hoping his son could be his ticket to get out of Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, launched his attack while his mother pleaded Ismail to stop.
“Azharuddin’s father was upset that he was asking to be left alone because he was so tired. He didn’t attend school today so that he could recover from his long flight from LA and simply wanted all the attention to stop. However, when Azharuddin put his foot down and said that was it and there was to be no more talking, Ismail just flipped,” the Sun quoted one stunned onlooker as saying.
However, Azharuddin’s return to the slums was another picture altogether when his father had lifted him up and paraded him like a trophy.
Just a few hours after the attack, TB patient Ismail apologised for the attack, saying: “I was very sorry I did what I did. I was confused and stressed by my son’s homecoming and I did not know myself for a minute. I love my boy and I am very happy to have him home.” (ANI)

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): Joaquin Phoenix’s rep has slammed a Chicago-based psychiatrist for claiming that the actor-turned-rapper is mentally ill.
Apparently, Paul Dobransky – a relationships expert – had told the Los Angeles Times that the 34-year-old artist may be schizophrenic, pointing to his “socially inappropriate behavior,” including a new rap career, bushy beard and a bizarre Late Night with David Letterman appearance.
But Phoenix’s rep tells MTV News: “How absolutely inappropriate for a doctor who has no personal interaction or relationship with someone to diagnose them.”
“And to do so in a public forum. Hope they spelled his name right. Another 15-minute ‘expert’ is born!” the rep added.
However, Dobransky defended Phoenix in the Times interview, saying that he was “pretty offended” by Ben Stiller’s portrayal of Phoenix at the Oscars, reports Us magazine.
He said it seemed as if Stiller was “potentially beating down on the mentally ill.”
“The jury is not exactly in on what is happening,” Dobransky said of Phoenix, whom many speculate is pulling an elaborate hoax.
“Whatever it is, it’s not funny – whether it’s drug abuse, mental illness coming on or the clumsiest attempt ever at a career change,” the doctor added.
Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line has said that his most recent film, Two Lovers, will be his last film.

Kolkata, Feb. 27 (ANI): Bollywood actor and former beauty queen Aishwarya Rai Bachchan said on Thursday that she has always been a fan of double-Oscar winner A. R. Rahman, and feels fortunate that maximum of her films featured maestro’s music.
“Working with Rahman has been an absolute pleasure. It’s not just from Taal to Guru, but it’s from ‘Iruvar’ till ‘Ravana’. In fact, maximum of my films have enjoyed the music of Rahman and as a music lover and fan, I have always admired his music and he is a gifted musician,” Rai said, while addressing a press conference in Kolkata.
The Bollywood actress, who was in Kolkata for the shooting of her upcoming flick ‘Ravana’, said she was elated at Rehman’s double win at the Oscars for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
Rai added, though Rahman was very much celebrated in India but winning Oscar meant the global recognition, which was special.
Talking about Hollywood flick ‘The Pink Panther 2′, Rai said the experience of working with actor Steve Martin has been enriching.
“Working with Steve Martin was a good experience since he is the institution of comedy. We grew up watching his movies. So when it came to working with him and since he had already worked in Pink Panther before, so you know the kind of film you are going to be a part of. I am very happy that I got a chance to work with all these great actors because I feel experience is the greatest teacher of all,” the Bollywood star said.
Comparing her character in ‘Ravana’ with the one in hardcore Hollywood flick, Pink Panther, the former Miss World said her characters in both the films were quite challenging.
“These are very different. One is Mani Ratnam and the other Pink Panther. So you can assume what the audience can expect. Those who watch English movie know about Pink Panther. Mani Ratnam is the kind of filmmaker we know he is, so he will present that kind of cinema only,” Rai opined. (ANI)

New York, Feb 27 (ANI): It seems film director Steven Spielberg’s refusal to act as artistic adviser during the Beijing Olympic Games has not been forgotten by the Chinese, for censors in the country cut his appearance at the Academy Awards.
It happened when the Oscars ceremony was re-aired in the Far East 12 hours later, and Spielberg announced the nominees for Best Picture and the winner, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, reports the New York Post.
Chinese viewers saw their screens suddenly cut to the beaming ‘Slumdog’ crew without any build-up, and insiders say that it was done as a revenge for his refusal to help at the Olympics.
Spielberg had refused to take part because China buys oil from the Sudanese Government, whom he considered responsible for the genocide in Darfur.
More than 200,000 have been killed and 2.5 million made homeless in the conflict between Arab Janjaweed forces, supported by the government, and Christian villagers in the country’s south. ANI)

The 71-year-old was made a foreign commander of the country’s National Order of Arts and Letters in recognition of his contributions to the film industry.

Hailing Hoffman as one of Hollywood’s leading figures, Albanel told him: “You have such a dramatic power that it is difficult to dissociate you from the characters you have played.”
The actor quickly brushed off his watery eyes, according to Contactmusic, and jokingly said: “When you get to my age, you cry at the weather reports.”

New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): After winning accolades at the Oscars, the little protagonist of Oscar winning documentary ‘Smile Pinky’ got a warm reception by the wife of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Gursharan Kaur hosted a reception for Pinky Sonkar and her father at her official residence on Friday to honour her Oscar win.
Perched safely in her father’s arms, Pinky ducked shyly as the photographers urged her to smile for them.
Hailing from a nondescript village of Uttar Pradesh, the small wonder is being hailed as a hero by her villagers for striking gold young.
‘Smile Pinky’ is the story of a child with a lip deformity and was one of the four films nominated for best short documentary at the Academy Awards.
American filmmaker Megan Mylan’s film ‘Smile Pinky’ depicts the saga of six-year-old Pinki Sonkar who had become a social outcast because of a cleft lip.
The 39-minute documentary traces Pinki’s journey from being ostracized to being treated like a normal girl after a social worker helped her undergo a successful surgery. (ANI)
