SLUMDOG kid in trouble!

Bollywood Trade News Network
Child star Rubina Ali may have gained an overnight stardom with Oscar winner SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, but 9 year-old slum kid isn’t having the best of the times as it should have been. Infact the girl is trapped in a new dilemma.

If the current reports are to be believed than it is being stated that British tabloids have accused the father of Rubina Ali of allegedly trying to sell her off for a whopping sum of Rs 20 million. The tabloids claim to have done a sting operation against the father. In a bid to escape poverty and life in the slum father Rafiq Qureshi and an uncle had put Rubina up for adoption to the tabloid’s undercover reporters posing as a wealthy family from Saudi Arabia. However Rafiq denied the claim and said that he had gone to meet an Arabian sheikh to discuss about an ad film and had no plans to sell off his daughter.

Reportedly Rubina’s real mother Khurshid, who separated from her husband eight years ago, claimed that Rubina’s future is in danger if she remains with Rafiq. She even approached the police for that matter. The other day Khurshid arrived at Bandra’s Gharib Nagar slums where Rubina lives, and abused everyone. She tried to attack Rubina’s stepmum Munni, but others intervened. Meanwhile, Rafiq’s relatives arrived and tried to convince the media how loving a father Rafiq was and why Rubina should live only with him. Later the police recorded the statements of Khurshid, Rafiq and Rubina.

It is being said that Rubina’s statement did not match with that of Rafiq’s. While on camera she maintained her father’s statement. But off camera she held that when her father asked if she would like to go to Saudi Arabia she was quite gung-ho about it. And all set to go to Saudi.

Well all we can say is that Rubina’s life is not as ordinary as that of slum kid anymore.

Rakeysh Mehra shares special friendship with Rahman

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says he has found a special friend in Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman, who has created music for two of his movies.

‘Rahman and I kind of discovered each other during ‘Rang De Basanti’ (RDB). With him, it’s not project-to-project … Ours is a collaborative effort and it’s a great team,’ Mehra told IANS.

The two not only meet and talk but also keep in touch via the Internet.

‘We keep meeting, talking, discussing ideas over the Internet and Skype (Internet telephony) about the movies I want to make and about the music he’s churning, etc,’ the director added.

Karan Johar trains lens on slums with ‘Slumdog’ kid

Mumbai, April 21 (IANS) He is known for making designer films, but Karan Johar recently shot some key sequences of his ‘My Name Is Khan’ in a slum here with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ kid Tanay Cheda.

Karan said Tanay, who played the ‘middle’ Jamal in the multiple Oscar-winning film, made Shah Rukh Khan’s childhood look convincing for the film.

The director chose him to play young Shah Rukh because of not only his facial likeness to the star but also Tanay’s instant connectivity with the Mumbai slums and thereafter the Western audience.

‘Tanay is exceptionally talented. He was able to imbibe Shah Rukh’s character traits and use them to make SRK’s childhood look convincing,’ said Karan.

The scenes with Tanay were shot in Borivali along with actress Zarina Wahab, who plays Shah Rukh’s mother in the movie. The director now intends to cast Tanay as junior SRK whenever required, much in the way that Master Mayur played the young Amitabh Bachchan in a series of films.

Though the take-off point for ‘My Name Is Khan’ is 9/11, not a single shot is taken in New York. The film is set in Los Angeles and San Francisco – two of the most expensive cities in the US for shooting.

While Karan Johar’s production of Rensil de Silva’s Kareena Kapoor-Saif Ali Khan film on terrorism will have Philadelphia masquerading as New York, his own directorial take on terrorism and the isolation of the working-class Muslim has gone to two US cities.

Karan shot in LA earlier this year and leaves for San Francisco in May for a 40-day schedule.

Rubina’s estranged mom shocked over ’sale’ reports

Mumbai, April 19 (IANS) ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child star Rubina Ali’s mother Khushi is aghast by reports that her ex-husband was prepared to sell their daughter for 200,000 pounds (over Rs.14 million), but said her elder daughter had informed her about the matter two weeks ago.

‘Though my elder daughter Sanaa informed me of the matter almost two weeks ago, I did not believe he (Rafiq Qureshi) would actually agree to do this,’ a shocked Khushi told IANS here Sunday.

Khushi said that Qureshi and his second wife Meena were always ‘crazy for money’.

‘Now that my daughter has achieved international fame, they want to capitalise on it at any cost,’ she said.

British news website News of the World had reported that Qureshi wanted to get rid of poverty and become a millionaire by selling his nine-year-old daughter after it conducted a sting operation.

Qureshi demanded 200,000 pounds from the News of the World’s undercover reporters who posed as a wealthy family from Dubai. He told the fake sheikh this week: ‘I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future.’

While Qureshi’s phone was constantly switched off, his neighbour and friend Yakub Abdul Sheikh confirmed that the incident had occurred a few days ago, but nobody really took it seriously as Rubina’s father said he had been ‘misunderstood’ by the foreigners.

‘Qureshi later told me that since the foreigners were speaking in Arabic, he misunderstood what the interpreter was saying,’ Sheikh said.

Sheikh claimed that Qureshi had told him he had no intentions of giving away his daughter in adoption for 200,000 pounds to an Arab family as reported by the British media.

‘Qureshi feels that the issue was blown out of proportion because of the miscommunication with the foreigners,’ Sheikh said.

Rubina’s mother also said that Qureshi should be made to account for the money the nine-year-old had earned from the multiple Oscar-winning film and added that the money be spent to admit the girl to a good hostel.

‘That money should be put aside in a separate deposit in Rubina’s name and she should be admitted to a good hostel. She can be taken care of and can also pursue her studies and acting career simultaneously,’ Khushi said.

Jai Ho did not deserve an Oscar: legendary singer

Legendary Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh said that it was beyond his reasoning as to why the Jai Ho song in Slumdog Millionaire won two Oscars. The singer voiced his opinion during the launch of his album Inteha.

He added that though he is happy that India has won the Oscars, he could not understand on what basis the song was considered for the Oscars.

The album was released by sitarist Anoushka Shankar 35000 ft above sea level. There are eight songs in the album, which are mainly romantic.

Of course there are some songs on life and philosophy too, adds a source.

Dr AR Rahman Now

This has been a season which has seen music composer AR Rahman sweeping the music awards at almost every award function that was held in the year. Now a double Oscar winner, as well, there is perhaps little that is left for him to achieve.

But now it seems that he is all set to acquire another feather in his cap, which is that of a doctorate from the Middlesex University. The university is celebrating the tenth year of its regional office in India and wants to confer an honoury doctorate on Rahman. The ceremony is likely to take place in the campus on July. In return, Rahman is trying to work out something by which the students from his music conservatory can receive a bachelors degree from Middlesex, and also spend the final year studying at its London campus.

Music composers capitalise on election fever, creating campaigning songs

Rajkot, Mar 19 (ANI): With general elections round the corner, it is not only hectic schedule for politicians of all hues, but also for a good number of music composers.

These music composers are busy creating new lyrical jingles and songs lauding the achievements of major political parties and even individual candidates in the fray.

For instance, budding singers and music composers in Rajkot have come together to make the most of the election fever.

“The words of the song have been changed keeping election in the mind. I feel the song which has already won an Oscar award will benefit the Congress party and also will make an impact with the voters,” said Kinjal Joshi, a singer.

With an aim to spice up its election campaign, Congress party has bought the rights to play ‘Jai Ho’, the Oscar-winning song from the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Congress leaders said this particular song which means ‘Let Victory Prevail’, will be played during rallies in villages, rural towns and even cities to lure the voters.

Indeed, the elections have been a sort of blessing in disguise for the music composers. Until the other day, they were reeling under the current economic downturn.

“We do not owe allegiance to any of the parties. We have kept in mind the requirements of the political parties and accordingly we have composed the songs. If the parties like these, we will be paid well and it will improve the prospects of artistes like us,” said Utpal, a music composer. By Suresh Parikh (ANI)

Kate Winslet is the El Dorado for politicians!

London, March 8 (ANI): UK’s political party The Liberal Democrats was left red faced after it used Kate Winslet’s pictures in an advertisement without her consent.

Party leader Nick Clegg, a pal of the actress’ director-husband Sam Mendes, was left guarding his pride after a snap of the Oscar winner was made to appear promoting a Lib Dem awards ceremony.

The picture, apparently showing her at the recent Lib Dem Council Awards in Harrogate, was featured in the party’s conference brochure.

It allegedly offered the belief that Winslet, who has always sealed her political affiliations, was a Lib Dem supporter.

“They did not request permission to use the image and, so far, Kate has not been made aware of its use. I am not aware of her political position,” the Independent quoted her rep as saying.

However, a Lib Dem spokesman insisted: “It was a humorous piece for a fairly low-key event.”

On being questioned if the ad backed the idea of depicting the star as a party supporter, he added: “That is not the idea…. We are more than happy to make it clear that it is not the case.” (ANI)

Michelle Williams will take care of Heath’s Oscar until Matilda turns 18

Melbourne, Mar 06 (ANI): Hollywood actress and late Heath Ledger’s former lover Michelle Williams will take of his Oscar award, which will go to his daughter Matilda, until the girl turns 18.

Matilda will be the owner of the Oscar, which will always remind her of her talented father, but The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided that Matilda’s mother Michelle will take of it until Matilda turns 18.

Heath Ledger’s parents Kim and Sally, who accepted the Academy award on his behalf, said that the Oscar might go back to Australia.

“She can’t sign for it until she’s 18, so it stays in trust here or in Australia,” News.com.au quoted Kim as saying.

“We expect a representative of the Ledger estate to bring the statuette in tomorrow so that the engraved plate can be affixed,” Unger told the L.A. Times newspaper.

“Soon after that, we expect the statuette to be delivered to Michelle Williams,” Unger added.

Heath, who died of drug overdose, met Michelle while filming Brokeback Mountain. (ANI)

Rushdie dubs Slumdog’s plot “patently ridiculous conceit”

Sydney, Mar 3 (ANI): Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire’s plot is “patently ridiculous conceit”, says British-Indian author Salman Rushdie.

According to Rushdie’s article in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, the central feature of the film – that a boy from the Mumbai slums manages to win the Indian TV version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – “beggars belief”, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

“This is a patently ridiculous conceit, the kind of fantasy writing that gives fantasy writing a bad name,” the author of The Satanic Verses said in the article.

Going by Rushdie’s comments, the film’s central weakness was that it was adapted from a book by Indian diplomat-novelist Vikas Swarup called Q and A, which is itself “a corny potboiler with a plot that defies belief”.

“It is a plot device faithfully preserved by the filmmakers, and lies at the heart of the weirdly renamed Slumdog Millionaire. As a result the film, too, beggars belief,” wrote Mumbai-born Rushdie.

Rushdie signed off by saying: “We can only hope that the worst is over, and that better movies, better musicals and better times lie ahead.”

Last month, the author marked the 20th anniversary of the Islamic death sentence imposed on him by Iran following the publication of The Satanic Verses. (ANI)
