Mumbai TV actress accused of child abuse gets bail

Mumbai, Aug.22 (ANI): A local court here on Saturday granted bail to Mumbai-based TV actress Urvashi Dhanorkar, who has been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Child Labour Act, for allegedly physically abusing her 10-year-old housemaid Rameshwari.

She was produced before the Bandra Holiday Court.

Dhanorkar’s lawyer, Nitin S. Satpute, contended the black marks and swelling on the child’s face were created by bee stings and the burn scars on her forearms were caused by boiling water fallen on her.

“Under the Juvenile Act, my client was arrested. She was produced in the court. Police asked for her remand but the court rejected the police plea and granted her judicial custody. Later, the court granted her bail,” said Satpute.

The actress was arrested on Saturday morning after medical reports confirmed that Rameshwari was physically abused.

Rameshwari was allegedly punched in her eye and was left with black and bruised marks, besides burns on her forearms.

The girl was rescued by her neighbours on Friday (Aug 21) night, when she was playing the children of her employer in the garden.

“When I saw this child her hands were burnt, eyes were red. She was scared. Residents gathered and took her to hospital. After examining, the doctor said it was marks of beating up. Secondly, according to the child labour (laws), hiring any child as a domestic help is a crime. We phoned police and it came for our help,” said Bindu Bhosle, Chairperson of Mahan Shakti a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) and neighbour of Rameshwari. (ANI)

BSF recovers 6 kilograms of heroin in Punjab

Jalandhar, Aug 17(ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday seized six kilograms of heroin from the agricultural fields in a Punjab village near Amritsar during a combing operation of the area near the India-Pakistan border.

BSF officials said that six packets, weighing a kilogram each, were found from an agricultural field. Pakistani smugglers would have thrown these packets in the late hours of Sunday when they were challenged.

“The 41 battalion of BSF (Border Security Force) recovered six kilograms of heroin. Last night (Sunday), officials noticed some suspicious movement at the international border and issued an alert. The smugglers were not capable of crossing the border,” said Himmat Singh, the Inspector General of the BSF.

“In the morning, when BSF officials inspected the site, they discovered six packets of heroin from an agricultural field,” Singh added. (ANI)

Trescothick said possibility of England comeback gave him nightmares

London, Aug.14 (ANI): Former opener Marcus Trescothick has admitted that suggestions he might come out of international retirement for next week’s showdown Ashes Test had given him nightmares.

Trescothick quit international cricket 18 months ago because he suffers from depression and does not want to tour again, but that did not stop suggestions that he might be the man for a crisis at the Brit Oval.

Trescothick, 33, has dismissed the idea and revealed he had woken up early one morning in a cold sweat dreaming about playing for England again.

“There is a nightmare a lot of cricketers experience that they can’t get their pads on when they are due in to bat. My dream was a variation of that. I couldn’t get my England kit out of my bag! The other players were waiting for me on the pitch to do a team photo so I was in a right panic. I woke up in a cold sweat,” the Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

“Perhaps that told me something. It gives me a massive kick that I am still thought good enough to come back and play at international level, but I’ve gone too far down the line in battling my stress problems to change my mind now about ending my England career,” he added.

Trescothick said: “My wife, Hayley, and I did talk about what my reaction should be if I were asked and we ended up having a good chuckle about it. She was prepared to back me if I wanted to play at The Oval and part of us both fancied the thought of getting involved again.”

Trescothick and Mark Ramprakash have been two names touted this week as potential England saviours after the debacle of Headingley, which saw Australia level the series 1-1.

Trescothick, writing in his column in a West Country newspaper, added: “I had a great time playing international cricket and we both have some very happy memories of my days as an England player. But it just didn’t feel right.

“Nothing in me made me feel I had to do it so I came to the conclusion that I don’t want it enough. Andrew Strauss did ring me over the last few days, but it was to ask me to play in a golf day for him. We did talk about England, but there was nothing direct about my involvement and he knows I won’t be reconsidering.” (ANI)

Brad Pitt’s makeup artist does scary job on Sonu Sood

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Sonu Sood has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ made by UAE filmmaker Ali Mostafa. A major part of the film requires the Bollywood actor to be badly disfigured and the makeup artist chosen to bring about half-mutilated face was none other than Jean Ann Black, who worked on Brad Pitt’s face in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.

The actor is all praise for Ann Black.

‘Actually half the face of my character gets mutilated. I couldn’t believe it when I saw what miracle had been worked by the makeup artist. I was horrified to see my own face in the mirror,’ Sonu told IANS.

Sonu, who was recently seen in films like ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ and ‘Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi’, has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ in Dubai with Alexandra Maria Lara.

‘What she did to my face was stunning and shocking. My makeup used to take three-four hours every morning. I had to sit patiently as 50 percent of my face disappeared under makeup – literally. And then there were these special lenses not just for the cornea but the entire eye which gave it a scary clotted eye.’

Sonu is glad his little son wasn’t with him.

‘He’d have got really frightened. I did when I saw myself. People who’ve seen what she has done can’t believe the transformation. They say the makeup artist has done as good a job on my face as she did with Brad Pitt,’ said Sonu.

And to further complete the Brad-Benjamin Button picture Sonu even has the actor who played Brad’s father in the film as his co-star.

‘Jason Fleming who played Brad Pitt’s father in ‘Benjamin Button’ plays the villain in ‘City Of Life’,’ he said.

Lucknow, April 19 (IANS) Nine-year-old Chandan Singh was an avid watcher of MTV’s reality show ‘Roadies’ and never missed an episode. But Saturday night’s episode was to be his last. The boy hanged himself accidentally while imitating a stunt on the show.

Chandan, a Class 3 student, had watched the episode where two female contestants, Palak and Phalguni, were made to stand on a wooden stool with their hands tied. A rope was also placed around their neck. Another semi-finalist, Noman, was then given three minutes to save one of them.

‘He watched the episode on the third floor of our house along with his friends and tried to imitate the stunt after his friends left. After hearing a loud noise, I rushed to the room and found Chandan hanging from the ceiling fan,’ his uncle Bhagat Singh told media persons.

Inspector Jaganath Saroj of Vikas Nagar police station said: ‘According to his uncle, Bhagat Singh, with whom he used to live in the Vikas Nagar locality, Chandan never missed any episode of the show.’

Chandan was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead by the doctors.

Cyclone Bijli kills three in Bangladesh

Dhaka – At least three people were reportedly killed as Cyclone Bijli swept over south-eastern part of the country Saturday, officials said.

The cyclone hit Bangladesh’s coastal areas late Friday night and turned into a land depression the following morning.

Reports from southern tourism district of Cox’s Bazar said three people were killed when their thatched homes collapsed and trees fell on them.

“There are reports coming in of damage of property and homes in the remote areas, we are still assessing the loss of property,” Syedul Islam, an official at the disaster management ministry, said.

Several thousand inhabitants, who were evacuated from the islands in the Bay of Bengal, returned to their homes Saturday as the storm weakened. But fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal had not yet gone back to sea. (dpa)

Ashton Kutcher first to break Twitter’s million mark

San Francisco – Actor Ashton Kutcher has won the great Twitter popularity contest, becoming the first contributor to the cult microblogging site to amass one million followers.

Kutcher passed the milestone early Friday morning, just half an hour before CNN reached the same mark. The two leading Twitter contributors had been in a race to pass the 1-million mark, with the winner donating 10,000 mosquito bed nets to charity for World Malaria Day later this month.

Kutcher celebrated the victory in an online video feed with his actress wife Demi Moore.

The milestone underlined the growing popularity of the Twitter site, where contributors post messages of up to 140 characters in length and distribute them to the cellphones of their followers.

According to statistics released Thursday by web tracking firm Comscore, the site now has 9.3 million users, and its growth rate in March was 131 per cent compared to a year earlier. (dpa)

Arjan’s passion for cars

FASHION fame Arjan Bajwa didn’t mind sacrificing his Sunday morning sleep to zoom off to the venue at the recently concluded Parx Super Car show held at Kala Ghoda.

His passion for the luxury car was well evident as he didn’t have the time to have a look at the pretty ladies present on the show instead he gave a skip to them for a day and was glued to the finest of the luxury and sports cars at the car show ready to take a ride of Mumbai city.

A red Ferrari is what attracted him the most. Despite the fact that he doesn’t own one but the desire was evident in his gleaming eyes. Bajwa told us, “My whole point of coming here was that it is a good platform to know and understand the mechanics and technicalities of cars. The cars displayed at the show have a low ground clearance so it will be interesting to know how so the cars perform on Mumbai roads at higher speeds.”

Also he said that the show was a good sign of celebration of a different kind.

Arshad sports a dark look for ISHQIYAN

Arshad Warsi perhaps for the first time is experimenting with his looks for any film. For Vishal Bharadwaj’s forthcoming production, ISHQIYAN being directed by Abhishek Chaubey Arshad shall be seen in a role that he has never attempted before.

Our unit sources reveal that since he plays a guy of the streets he has been made to look suitably dark. So therefore whenever Arshad arrives on the film sets every morning, hours are spent painting Arshad Warsi’s torso black. He may not be in his best looking appearance in this film, but neither was Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bharadwaj’s OMKARA and yet he went on to win accolades and awards for his role in the film. Arshad is presumably aiming for the same. The film also stars beautiful Vidya Balan and talented Naseeruddin Shah.

Sources also further reveal that, “Arshad’s stunning performance in the film will be a surprise package for the audience and his chemistry with co-star Vidya is already being talked about. Reportedly both share a few intimate scenes in the film which are suppose to be aesthetically shot. Vidya plays a con-woman in the film who out masters the uncle nephew duo of Naseer and Arshad in the film. The film is slated for a year end release.”

Light aircraft crashes in Indonesia’s Papua

The Avia Star aircraft was en route from the capital Jayapura to Wamena district, carrying cargo and four crew members. It crashed at about 7 am (2200 GMT Wednesday) on Pike Mountain, said Papua police chief Bagus Eko Danto.

Bagus told Elshinta private radio that so far two bodies had been founded and a search was underway for the other two. He said the plane broke into pieces.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

It was the second fatal air crash this week in Indonesia. On Monday, a Fokker F-27 belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed in West Java’s Bandung airport, killing all 24 people on board. (dpa)

GBP/USD Daily Commentary for 4.8.09

The Cable continues to show relative strength on the back of surprisingly positive data surfacing from Britain over the past couple weeks. The GBP/USD kept its cool yesterday despite the broad selloff in U. S. equities and the Cable is running with the EUR/USD and U. S. equities Wednesday morning.

We expect to see the Cable’s strength continue as long as Britain’s data outperforms and its major financial institutions stay out of the headlines. If U. S. equities and the EUR/USD head north today, the GBP/USD should follow. On the other hand, if U. S. equities selloff again, we may see the Cable hold up once more.

However, we can’t forget the importance of the financial industry to Britain’s economy. Therefore, if U. S. banks hit another roadblock, the GBP/USD may have no choice but to head lower. Speculation set aside, the Cable is in great shape for the time being. It sits comfortably above our 1st tie uptrend line with no downtrend line in sight.

On the other hand, the failure of the GBP/USD to eclipse February highs and 1.50 is a cause for concern, and we’ll keep this in mind. If the Cable can climb back above March highs today we could see a nice short-term pop.

Even though Britain is quite on the news front today, the Pound could come alive tomorrow with a PPI release coupled with a BOE rate decision. Analysts are expecting the BOE to hold the benchmark rate at .50%. Fundamentally, we maintain resistance of 1.4730 with additional resistances hanging at 1.4770, 1.4834, 1.4883 and 1.4946.

The 1.50 level serves as a key psychological barrier while the 1.45 area acts as a psychological cushion. To the downside, we hold our supports of 1.4676, 1.4612, 1.4571, 1.4538 and 1.4484. The GBP/USD is currently exchanging at 1.4702.

Assam on maximum alert, toll in blasts rises to 10

Guwahati, April 7 (IANS) A maximum security alert was sounded in Assam Tuesday, a day after a series of explosions rocked the state ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s arrival here for poll campaigning. The toll in the blasts rose to 10 with two of the 61 injured succumbing to their injuries.

A woman injured in the explosion here and a youth injured in the Dhekijuli blast died Tuesday morning, police said.

The prime minister arrives in the eastern tea growing town of Dibrugarh Monday afternoon to campaign for the Congress party.

‘Security forces have been put on a state of high alert to prevent any further rebel attacks. Police, army and paramilitary troopers have been deployed in strength across the state,’ Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.

Security forces have launched a massive hunt to nab the bombers. The government has blamed the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) for Monday’s four explosions and two grenade attacks.

‘The ULFA is behind the attacks and I would say such senseless killings of innocent civilians would achieve nothing. We all should stand up against such barbaric terror attacks. I have asked the security agencies to make sure the bombers are captured,’ the chief minister said.

A powerful explosion rocked Guwahati’s busy Maligaon area Monday, while another explosion shook Dhekiajuli town in northern Sonitpur district, about 150 km from here.

The third explosion took place in eastern Karbi Anglong district injuring two people, while another grenade attack in northern Udalguri district had no casualties.

There was another grenade attack at a police station late Monday in Mancachar in western Dhurbi district in which one policeman was killed and two injured.

India claim series victory as rain ends test

India claimed their first test series victory in New Zealand since 1968 after rain forced the third match at the Basin Reserve to end in a draw on Tuesday.

The hosts, already 1-0 down in the best of three series lurched to 281 for eight when a light rain shower forced the players off at 1408 (0208 GMT), about 30 minutes after lunch while they were chasing 617 for an unlikely victory.

Captain Daniel Vettori was on 15, while Iain O’Brien was on 19 when they left the field, and despite two attempts to remove the covers, persistent showers propelled by gale-force northerly winds ensured they never returned from the dressing room.

Umpires called the game off at 1630 with heavy overcast conditions overhead and the light fading fast.

New Zealand were trailing by a massive 335 runs when rain intervened and with 57.3 overs remaining in the day’s play, facing their worst defeat by runs at home. They were beaten by 299 runs by Pakistan at Eden Park in 2001.

“It was a very good team effort. The batsmen and the bowlers contributed when it was needed from them,” India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni told reporters.

New Zealand had resumed the fifth day on 167 for four with Ross Taylor on 69 and Franklin on 26, with their intention to hold out until the forecast poor weather arrived in the afternoon to dampen India’s hopes of a 2-0 series victory.

FINAL SAY

Taylor, who was recalled on Monday after initially being given out for nine, moved comfortably through to his fourth test century, which he achieved when he flicked a Harbhajan delivery to fine leg for his 15th boundary.

Harbhajan, however, had the final say when Taylor played around a delivery that did not turn and was bowled for 107 to end the 142-run partnership with Franklin.

Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum survived a chance while on nought when Munaf Patel dropped him at mid-off from a Sachin Tendulkar full toss, but he failed to capitalise when an edge rebounded of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s gloves to Rahul Dravid.

Tendulkar then trapped Franklin in front for 49 to leave New Zealand in deep trouble on 254 for seven at lunch, and with just the bowlers remaining, little hope of batting out the day.

The matched seemed destined for an early finish when Tim Southee was caught by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for three off Harbhajan Singh shortly after the lunch interval.

O’Brien, who hit four boundaries in his innings, and Vettori however provided some stubborn resistance and as the rain intensified, they had no hesitation in heading to the changing rooms when asked by umpires Simon Taufel and Daryl Harper.

“I think India outplayed us in most departments apart from our first morning session when we had them 200 for six, from then on in, it’s been India’s game,” said Vettori.

“But there’s been some pleasing aspects, the fight that Ross Taylor and James Franklin showed to give us even a chance of saving the game was pleasing.

“But India obviously dominated the game.”

USD Technical Forex Analysis for Forex Traders

The USD continued to correct higher trough today’s New York trade reaching the best levels of the day against the majors shortly after the London fix; despite the rise in the Greenback the majors held important S/R levels during the day and remains in two-way action into the close. Technical trade was the rule for the most part as the lack of economic news kept traders focused on near-time price levels with stops helping to drive most of the intraday action.

GBP never traded back to the earlier high seen in late Europe this morning of 1.4961 but retreated finding layers of stops for a low print at 1.4668 before recovering more than a full handle and settling above the 1.4700 handle. Traders note that cross-spreaders for Yen liquidating Yen crosses as well as weakness in EURO helping to drive the rate lower but Cable still held technical support at the 1.4720 area. EURO also took a dive dropping from the 1.3550 area in early trade for a low print at 1.3356 once again holding tech support ahead of the 1.3330 area; the rate also seeing liquidation from Yen crosses.

EUURO recovered back to the 1.3400 area and is trying for a close above the 1.3400 handle suggesting that the dips are being bought. Traders note that volumes were light on the move lower and there was bid interest during the fix today. The rest of the majors all held under tech resistance after trying for highs; traders note that the tech levels seen from last week are back in play across all pairs. USD/CHF high prints at 1.1409 were under the tech level of 1.1420; the rate failing to hold the 1.1400 handle by the end of the day. USD/JPY held firm making the USD at the highest levels seen since last year but off its highs; high prints at 101.46 never challenged in New York and the rate is unable to hold the 101.00 handle into the close.

USD/CAD rallied to a high print at 1.2443 before dropping back under the 1.2400 handle; a late push back to the 1.2400 handle sees the rate holding around the 1.2405 area in light trade. All the rates either held their respective 100 day MA S/R levels or their recent Fib levels suggesting that all of today’s action was dominated by short-term traders and likely will repeat tomorrow. With a light economic calendar due tomorrow and into mid-week the USD will likely remain two-way for the next 24-48 hours. Look for the Greenback to be subdued overnight and respect current ranges.

Merkel cuts short trip to Afghanistan

Termez, Uzbekistan – German Chancellor Angela Merkel left Afghanistan Tuesday, after bad weather forced her to cut short a surprise visit to German troops in the region.

The chancellor, who had to cancel a planned excursion to the German military base in Feyzabad due to bad flying conditions, departed Tuesday morning from the Termez military base in neighbouring Uzbekistan.

Merkel’s two-day visit came shortly after NATO set a new strategy for Afghanistan, placing a greater emphasis on reconstruction, alongside its military fight against the Taliban.

During her trip, the chancellor said Germany would be forced to maintain a strong military presence in northern Afghanistan for some time to come, since the Afghans were not in a position to maintain their own security in the north.

Germany plans to increase the number of its soldiers deployed in Afghanistan by 600 to 4,400 in the months leading up to presidential elections in August.
