A 22-year-old hotel management student set himself on fire in Roop Nagar area of north Delhi on Monday evening. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
Failing to do well in his exams, the victim, Dipankar Sharma, was depressed, the police said. Sharma was pursuing a hotel management course from Mumbai.
His parents were away in Mumbai to attend a meeting with college authorities when he took the extreme step. Sharma had decided not to accompany them to Mumbai.
The incident was reported around 7.15 pm on Monday when Sharma locked himself in his room on the second floor, poured kerosene on himself and sit himself afire. The family members, who were present in the house, rushed to save him after he cried for help.
The door was forced open and Sharma was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital for treatment. The doctors said he had suffered 90 per cent burns and was in a critical state.
On Tuesday afternoon he succumbed to the injuries. His parents returned from Mumbai on Tuesday morning.
Police ruled out any foul play in the case.

Sixty-year-old Diwaliben Bhalodi, a resident of Moti Marad village in Dhoraji taluka of Rajkot district, has been battling for life at Junagadh Civil Hospital after she was allegedly set ablaze by her daughter Kanta, 30.
This is the second such incident in Saurashtra in a month’s time when a parent was attacked with murderous intentions.
Earlier, a minor school girl had murdered her parents and brother in Porbandar.
Dhoraji police said Diwaliben had been admitted to the hospital on March 28 with severe burn injuries. The old woman, who has received more than 60 per cent burns, gained consciousness on March 31, the police said.
In her statement to the Junagadh police, the old woman has accused her married daughter, Kanta, who lives with her husband at Vajodi village in Jasdan taluka of Rajkot district.
Kanta, along with other relatives, had admitted Diwaliben in the hospital on March 28.
The woman told the police that Kanta, who had come to meet her at Moti Marad, in a fit of rage, poured kerosene on her and set her afire, when they were alone in the afternoon.
The Junagadh police have registered a case and transferred it to the Dhoraji police. Dhoraji police said they are yet to find the exact cause of the quarrel between mother and daughter.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Kanta.

Shah Rukh Khan’s house attacked

Two motorcycle-borne miscreants hurled a bottle of kerosene at actor Shah Rukh Khan’s Bandra residence, Mannat, at around 2.30 am on Friday. Nobody was injured.
Security personnel at Khan’s bungalow were unable to note the registration number of the bike in the darkness. A complaint was lodged at the Bandra police station.
According to reports, a fundamentalist group was upset with the use of certain words in the song, Marjaani, marjaani, featuring Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the film Billu.
On Friday morning a group of protesters gathered outside Bandra’s G-7 cinema complex, where Billu was being screened, and broke glass panes and tore away posters.

Mumbai, Feb 13 (ANI): Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan’s bungalow in Mumbai’s Bandra locality was attacked early this morning.
Two or three unidentified persons threw bottles filled with kerosene at Khan’s sea-facing house ‘Mannat’ and fled from the scene.
The security men at the actor’s house failed to catch the miscreants.
None of the residents of Mannat were present in the house when the incident took place.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged and the police are investigating the incident. (ANI)
