Sonia, Tata, Mukesh in Time’s top 100 list

India’s Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and industrialists Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani are among the finalists for Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2009 that also includes US President Barack Obama.

The first African-American President of the US is currently ranked 13th, while the top position is held by a person who goes by the name ‘Moot’, the founder of 4chan.org, a website for posting images and discussions anonymously.

Gandhi, who is leading the ruling Congress party’s bid for a re-election in the coming Parliamentary polls, is ranked 43Â?ahead of Tata (102), the maker of the world’s cheapest car Nano and Ambani (169), who the publication referred to as ‘petrol prince.’

The 203 finalists includes seven people of Indian origin. The four others are are cola-queen Indra Nooyi of Pepsico, movie moghul Ronnie Screwvala of UTV, public face for Washington’s Troubled Asset Relief Programme Neel Kashkari, and Harvard-educated management consultant Ram Charan.

Besides, Slumdog Millionaire-fame British filmmaker Danny Boyle, who hit the headlines with the Oscar-winning movie shot in Mumbai slums, is also among the finalists.

Time would publish the final list later in the year. In a continuing online poll on Time’s website, Screwvala is currently top-ranked among Indians at 33rd overall place, Nooyi is at 89, Kashkari 187 and Charan 193.

The site of moot (pseudonym), the highest ranked person at present, is said to have been started in 2003 by a then 15-year-old student from New York City.

On Gandhi, 62, who has figured on Time’s 100 most influential people list twice before, the publication said that the “the Italian-born head of India’s most influential political party is beloved by her constituents, not only because of her family history (she came to power after her husband Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated) but also because of her efforts to combat poverty.”

However, in a negative for her, the Indian National Congress party President “has been bogged down by a public spat with one of her rivals,” it said, without specifying who her rival is.

Among those from outside India, the prominent names include US First Lady Michelle Obama, former US President George Bush, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and US finance secretary Tim Geithner.

Sarah Palin, who ran for US vice-president’s office, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan’s army chief Ashfaq Kayani, Tibetan leader Dalai Lama, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Hu Jintao and US treasury chief Ben Bernanke are among other finalists.

Besides, high-profile businessmen like Warren Buffett, Carlos Slim Helu, Rupert Murdoch, Steve Jobs, Jeff Immelt and Michael Bloomberg also find a place in the list.

There are celebrities from media, entertainment and sports such as Oprah Winfrey, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Arnold Schwazznenger, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Kate Winslet, Rafael Nadal, George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Jay Leno.

Interestingly, the finalists also include the alleged scamster Bernie Madoff and Thomas Beatie, who is popularly known as The Pregnant Man and has become a sort of icon in the transgender community with his second baby due in June.

About Obama, Time said: “He overcame the Clinton machine, the McCain brigade and America’s racial history to win nearly 53 per cent of the vote and a shot at what’s beginning to seem like the least enviable job in the world.”

But, “for a guy whose campaign was renowned for order, Obama’s Cabinet appointments have been a tad messy. But let’s face it: he’s the most powerful man in the world,” it added.

Kate Winslet is the El Dorado for politicians!

London, March 8 (ANI): UK’s political party The Liberal Democrats was left red faced after it used Kate Winslet’s pictures in an advertisement without her consent.

Party leader Nick Clegg, a pal of the actress’ director-husband Sam Mendes, was left guarding his pride after a snap of the Oscar winner was made to appear promoting a Lib Dem awards ceremony.

The picture, apparently showing her at the recent Lib Dem Council Awards in Harrogate, was featured in the party’s conference brochure.

It allegedly offered the belief that Winslet, who has always sealed her political affiliations, was a Lib Dem supporter.

“They did not request permission to use the image and, so far, Kate has not been made aware of its use. I am not aware of her political position,” the Independent quoted her rep as saying.

However, a Lib Dem spokesman insisted: “It was a humorous piece for a fairly low-key event.”

On being questioned if the ad backed the idea of depicting the star as a party supporter, he added: “That is not the idea…. We are more than happy to make it clear that it is not the case.” (ANI)

Freida Pinto ‘regularly pinches herself to believe her rise to stardom’

London, March 8 (ANI): Freida Pinto is yet to believe she has landed the Hollywood jackpot after starring in Danny Boyle’s mega hit ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

The 24-year-old, who hails from the city of Mumbai, revealed she kept pinching herself to believe the astonishing success of the film which bagged eight Oscars, seven BAFTAs and four Golden Globes.

Freida recently landed herself a role in Woody Allen’s new movie while being a favourite amongst the designers running to dress her.

She was also said to have Kate Winslet’s LA agent on her speed dial while boasting of having ear of the top actress herself, Angelina Jolie.

But the actress, who has been rumoured to have sparks flying with her 6-year-junior co-star Dev Patel, insisted she was yet to be struck by stardom and was far from believing that her showbiz dreams had come true.

“It’s been six months and nothing has sunk in yet,” News of the World quoted her as saying at the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills.

“I’m still the same sensitive and simple girl who always dreamed about becoming an actress.

“The only thing that’s changed is that the girl walking around in jeans and tees has now taken to wearing designer dresses,” she added.

Her former fiancé Rohan Antao had claimed that Freida not only compelled him to stay mum about their engagement, for the benefit of the movie, but also snubbed him to be with her onscreen lover.

Dumped Antao blamed the film and Dev for putting an end to his relationship with the actress.(ANI)

Aniston caught snickering at Brad Pitt’s Oscar loss

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): Actress Jennifer Aniston, who was very much in the spotlight during the Academy Awards, was caught snickering after her ex-husband Brad Pitt did not win the Best Actor award.

Aniston, Pitt and Angelina Jolie were all smiles when they knew the cameras were trained on them, but there were a few occasions when they let their masks slip.

The former Friends star let her mask slip when Michael Douglas announced Sean Penn as the winner for Best Actor, and as she was seated directly behind the “Milk” star, her an undeniable snicker, at Pitt losing out, could be seen.

But she was not the only one who let her feelings show, as Pitt too was seen as being less than chivalrous, reports Fox News.

When the auditorium erupted into a standing ovation for Best Actress winner Kate Winslet, Jolie, who was also nominated, was quick to stand up, but Pitt stayed seated.

It wasn’t until Jolie bent down and seemingly whispered to her man to make a move that he hesitantly rose to his feet. (ANI)

Winslet’s mum predicted Streep would win Best Actress Oscar

Washington, February 24 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet was sure that Meryl Streep would defeat her to clinch the Best Actress Oscar because her own mother, Sally, thought so.

What made Winslet’s mother to think this way was the fact that Streep has received 15 Academy Award nominations, more than any other actor or actress in the history of the prize giving, but has only won two statuettes.

“I was a bit worried! At the last minute, I thought Meryl might get it. She has had so many nominations but she only won two,” the Contactmusic quoted Sally as saying.

Telling about how she was felling before the ceremony, Winslet said that she was terrified that she would once again have to return home empty-handed.

The actress said that she just could not believe it when she was declared the winner.

“I honestly didn’t expect it. When you’re in a category with Meryl Streep, you really just think, ‘Oh well. She’s Meryl Streep! She’s Meryl!’ It’s not supposed to be possible,” she said.

Winslet, named Best Actress for her role in The Reader on Sunday, took home the prestigious prize for the first time despite five nominations under her belt. (ANI)

Hefner wants ‘nude’ Winslet for Playboy

London, February 24 (ANI): 2009 is surely turning into an eventful year for Kate Winslet, for after winning an Oscar, two Golden Globes and a Bafta, the actress has been offered a spot on the Playboy cover.

Magazine mogul Hugh Hefner revealed he would love to have the ‘Titanic’ star join previous posers including Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Stone, Pamela Anderson and Charlize Theron.

“There’s no question we would be interested in Kate,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“It’s a competitive market, more than it used to be, so she would be a most welcome addition in our pages,” he added.

Kate, who has in the past posed nude in many of her movies, including ‘The Reader’, however, had previously sworn not to repeat her clothes-dropping act in future following fears of being typecast.

She had said: “I don’t want to be known as that actress who gets her kit off.” (ANI)
