Is Lara Dutta insecure over BLUE?

Sampurn, Bollywood Trade News Network
Is Lara Dutta insecure over her forthcoming film BLUE is what industry insiders are wondering. She may be playing the female lead in the film but she seems to be feeling threatened and losing sleep over Katrina Kaif’s special appearance in the film claim a few industry sources.

Sources also claim that she is waiting to see the rushes of BLUE and is requesting the makers for the same.

”Katrina was a last minute addition to the film reportedly on recommendation of good friend Akshay Kumar who is amongst the three male leads of the film along with Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan. Apart from a lavish song a few scenes too were shot on Katrina. But as reports have began pouring out that her role has increased since she enjoys a bigger star status, Lara is feeling mighty insecure. As it is the film is a full-on male bonding film and Lara despite of playing a significant character is relegated to the back seat as compared to her male counterparts. As it is the entire first round of publicity for the film was hogged by renowned international pop singer Kylie Minogue. Lara’s bikini clad pictures splashed all over the media too haven’t done the trick for her either. Her last release BILLU too saw the trio of Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone hogging all the publicity when in fact she had a bigger n better role in the film. She doesn’t want the same to happen here over Katrina and Kylie. So in a way her feeling of insecurity is justified,” adds the sources.

I won’t mind wearing a bikini if required: Anjana Sukhani

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Anjana Sukhani says she is game for bikinis if her role really demands it. Though she has adopted a glamorous persona in films like ‘Golmaal Returns’ and ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, the actress is yet to join the bikini brigade.

‘It’s not in my wish list either. However, there comes a point in your career where you get a film that requires you to shed your inhibitions. Of course, the role that I play has to be of utmost importance – if it is justified for the character to wear a bikini, then I won’t fret about it,’ Anjana told IANS.

Skin show has taken a different dimension in the last few months with actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Minissha Lamba and Amisha Patel getting into the swim wear for their roles. Also with dozens of film and fashion magazines hitting the stands, actresses are making a bee line to be seen on the cover.

‘I’m very sure about the fact that posing seductively for the camera doesn’t really pay. It can’t help you grab work. What eventually matters is how talented you are and whether you can deliver goods on the screen,’ said the actress who had grabbed attention in the Cadbury ad with superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

But being in the glamour world where beauty sells, isn’t that a dicey statement to make?

‘Of course, looking pretty is a valuable thing, but then talent matters as well’, said Anjana. ‘At the end of the day, it is about coming up with a balancing act. Being ‘just pretty’ or ‘just talented’ doesn’t help because one of them working just in isolation can’t take you anywhere. You have to have a good mix of both.’

‘My dad has always said that you should do things that reflect the goal that you want to ultimately meet. If a small step taken by me helps me get closer to that goal, I won’t mind doing that as long as I don’t cross any limits,’ she added.

In that case, how does she look back at her first few steps when she had just started her career with films like ‘Humdum’ (2005) and ‘Sun Zarra’ (2006)?

‘I continue to be emotionally attached to these films because those earlier steps reaffirmed that I existed and paved the way for me to appear in bigger and better films. I didn’t come from a filmy family; nor did I have any supermodel experience that could help me get work. Those were testing times and everything that I decided to do, I had to do it on my own without any godfather supporting me.’

With ‘Jashn’, ‘Tum Milo toh Sahi’ and ‘Allah Ke Banday’ in the pipeline, life is certainly looking up for Anjana.

‘Certainly. I am glad that these are turning out to be good times. I stand by all my decisions in the past and, regardless of whether they have succeeded or failed, I have no regrets,’ she said.

Pesticide for Kareena’s safety!

Strange as our headlines may seem, but they are hundred percent correct. As is known, actress Kareena Kapoor was in Chandigarh last weekend for shooting an ad film, being directed by her favourite, Imtiaz Ali, of JAB WE MET fame.

The shooting location was a wheat field in village Panhudi near Mallapur (Chandigarh). Just to ensure that Bebo dear was not bitten by an insect or a vermin, pesticides were sprayed in abundance on the fully harvested crop! Not only that, the path that Kareena was supposed to take for reaching the exact shooting venue was also fumigated.

Unfortunately, Kareena was not happy with the location and so pack up was announced and she returned to Mumbai, where the rest of the ad film will be shot.

Saif met Aamir over multiplex issue

Saif Ali Khan just recently visited Aamir Khan on the sets of his film 3 IDIOTS in Mumbai. Sources claim, the Chote Nawab who has now turned a producer is trying to safeguard his interest but since LOVE AAJ KAL which is scheduled for a June end release is his first production he doesn’t want it to get affected by the ongoing disputes.

Sources further revealed, ”Aamir was pleasantly surprised when Saif visited him as Kareena Kapoor who is also acting in the film wasn’t shooting that day. But Aamir then made time for Saif that afternoon during lunch and chatted with him about the current status on the issue and the stand they are likely to take in the future. The meeting was said to be highly informative for Saif who left the venue a bit more assured and in hope that things sort out before his film releases.”

We hope so too.

Karan Johar trains lens on slums with ‘Slumdog’ kid

Mumbai, April 21 (IANS) He is known for making designer films, but Karan Johar recently shot some key sequences of his ‘My Name Is Khan’ in a slum here with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ kid Tanay Cheda.

Karan said Tanay, who played the ‘middle’ Jamal in the multiple Oscar-winning film, made Shah Rukh Khan’s childhood look convincing for the film.

The director chose him to play young Shah Rukh because of not only his facial likeness to the star but also Tanay’s instant connectivity with the Mumbai slums and thereafter the Western audience.

‘Tanay is exceptionally talented. He was able to imbibe Shah Rukh’s character traits and use them to make SRK’s childhood look convincing,’ said Karan.

The scenes with Tanay were shot in Borivali along with actress Zarina Wahab, who plays Shah Rukh’s mother in the movie. The director now intends to cast Tanay as junior SRK whenever required, much in the way that Master Mayur played the young Amitabh Bachchan in a series of films.

Though the take-off point for ‘My Name Is Khan’ is 9/11, not a single shot is taken in New York. The film is set in Los Angeles and San Francisco – two of the most expensive cities in the US for shooting.

While Karan Johar’s production of Rensil de Silva’s Kareena Kapoor-Saif Ali Khan film on terrorism will have Philadelphia masquerading as New York, his own directorial take on terrorism and the isolation of the working-class Muslim has gone to two US cities.

Karan shot in LA earlier this year and leaves for San Francisco in May for a 40-day schedule.

Kareena’s Wish Comes True

After the success of Jab We Met, Kareena Kapoor had naturally expected that director Imtiaz Ali would be more than happy to work with her again. If the success of the film did great things to her career, it did wonders to his career as well. Suddenly, Imtiaz was the most wanted director on everyone’s list.

And Imtiaz quite shocked everyone when he opted for Deepika Padukone for his next film. The film, ‘Love Aaj Aur has been produced by Kareena’s boyfriend Saif Ali Khan, but there was little the actor could do to change the director’s mind. Saif was very keen that Kareena star in his maiden production but Imtiaz was equally adamant that Deepika suited the role more than Kareena. The actress may have been hurt by the director’s gesture but that did not stop her from wanting to be directed by him. And it seems that she has finally got her wish as Imtiaz has been roped in to direct an ad which will be starring her. It seems that Kreena was the one who pushed for Imtiaz as the director and this one time she managed to get her way.

t’s flattering and scary to be in power list: Kareena Kapoor

Mumbai, April 9 (IANS) She admits that no position in the film industry is permanent but at the same time Kareena Kapoor is excited after replacing Aishwarya Rai in Filmfare’s power list. The actress says the position is both flattering and scary as it comes with a lot of responsibilities.

‘I think Aishwarya has had a great innings. I think it’s a great honour to be where she was in the power list. Power equations in the entertainment industry change minute by minute. I’m definitely going to try my best to hold that position,’ Kareena told IANS.

Kareena, who was seen in last year’s hit ‘Golmaal Returns’, admits the power comes not just from the movies, but also the products that one endorses.

‘But I make sure the products reflect my personality. I’m endorsing 10 brands. Saif and I are endorsing just one brand together. We’re going easy on signing together,’ she said.

Excerpts:

Q: It’s quite an honour to zoom to the top 10 of the power list and to be the only woman there.

A: It’s flattering. And it’s scary. Lots of responsibilities. My power comes from my honesty to myself and to my work. I’ve always done things that come naturally from my heart. It’s amazing that I’m in the power list although I’ve never applied much thought to the process of getting there. I’m all heart, as you well know. At the end of the day, being true to myself is very important.

Q: Earlier Aishwarya Rai was in the Top 10 list.

A: Yes, I know. Everyone has a chance to be in a certain position. I think Aishwarya has had a great innings. I think it’s a great honour to be where she was in the power list. Power equations in the entertainment industry change minute by minute. I’m definitely going to try my best to hold that position.

The position makes me feel very responsible. I want to keep doing the kind of work that will keep me in that list. Last year I was seen in a successful film ‘Golmaal Returns’ where I didn’t have a pivotal role. Strangely audiences expect me to take centre stage all the time.

Q: How much of this power comes in a package with beau Saif Ali Khan?

A: We can’t deny he’s also one of the hottest actors in the industry. I think we are blend of looks and spirit. Saif and I are very alike. He also follows his heart and is very honest in what he does. Whether it’s his professional or personal life, he comes clean.

Q: The power comes not just from the movies but also the products that you endorse.

A: I agree. But I make sure the products reflect my personality. My products are young, zestful, fun and classy. Yeah, I do a lot of endorsements. I’m endorsing 10 brands. Curiously Saif and I are endorsing just one brand together. We’re going easy on signing together.

Q: So will you continue to be known as Kareena Kapoor after marriage?

A: I haven’t thought of it. Kareena Kapoor Khan sounds good. I leave the decision to Saif.

Q: Did (close friend) Amrita Arora’s marriage make you wishful for your own?

A: I am with Saif constantly. For us, marriage is just a piece of paper.

Who will play Jessica Lal in ‘Aamir’ director’s film?

Mumbai, April 8 (IANS) ‘Aamir’ director Rajkumar Gupta’s next film is based on the sensational Jessica Lal murder and he approached Kareena Kapoor to play one of the two protagonists. But so far he hasn’t been able to finalise anyone for the lead roles in ‘No One Killed Jessica’.

‘I did approach Kareena Kapoor initially to play one of the two protagonists. But nothing more can be said about the casting right now,’ Gupta told IANS.

Jessica Lal was gunned down in a New Delhi restaurant in April 1999. Manu Sharma, son of a former minister, is serving a life term for killing her.

‘All I can say at this moment is that the film and its script which I’ve just completed is inspired by a headline that I saw in the Times Of India in 2006 which said, ‘No One Killed Jessica’ (when all the accused in the sensational case were acquitted). It immediately set me thinking. Over the years, as the case dragged on, that headline acquired immense ironical overtones,’ he added

‘No One Killed Jessica’ will need two leading female performers – one will play Jessica and the other will be cast as her sister Sabrina who fought for justice on Jessica’s behalf.

The director, whose edgy hard-hitting drama ‘Aamir’ earned rave reviews in 2007, intends to give the same gritty treatment to his second film as well.

Apart from ‘No One Killed Jessica’, Gupta had also written the script of recently released ‘Barah Aana’.

Though Gupta is all for the way first time director Raja Menon had directed his script, he admits he would have filmed the script differently.

‘I’d have made ‘Barah Aana’ edgier, more gritty and fast-paced. That’s the treatment I had envisaged for the screenplay.

‘Also, it isn’t clear in the film why Naseeruddin Shah’s character doesn’t speak. He just looks angry. The fact is the character has nothing more to say to the world. This aspect doesn’t come across in the film,’ Gupta said.

Gupta also feels that Arjun Mathur is miscast as a Bihari waiter in ‘Barah Aana’.

‘I’d have cast someone like Deepak Dobriyal. But that’s neither here nor there. ‘Barah Aana’ is fine the way it is,’ he said.

Would Gupta write more scripts for other directors?

‘I don’t know. ‘Barah Aana’ was a commitment from before I directed ‘Aamir’. Right now my concentration is on casting for ‘No One Killed Jessica’. I just hope I don’t end up casting whoever is available. I need two very strong young actresses.’

Bipasha, Kareena, Priyanka are Bollywood’s bikini girls

New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) Not everyone can carry off a bikini well. In Bollywood, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra are the stars who do it with panache thanks to their attitude and confidence, say fashion experts.

While Kareena wore a lemon bikini for ‘Tashan’ and became the talk of the town for her size zero, Priyanka slipped into a sexy golden swimsuit for ‘Dostana’.

‘Kareena and Priyanka carried off their bikini act in their respective movies pretty well because they had the right attitude and confidence to carry off the two-piece with aplomb. They were sure of their bodies as well as the way they were looking on the camera,’ ace photographer Dabboo Ratnani told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

‘Both of them have great bodies and are neither too thin, nor too plump. They have perfect voluptuous bodies which looked perfect in the bikini,’ he added.

According to Mumbai-based celebrity designer Gavin Miguel, Bipasha rocked the big screen when she wore a bikini in ‘Dhoom 2′.

‘Bipasha really took the audience by surprise with her bikini act in the movie. She looked hot, sexy and very confident. The best part about her is that she has got a well-proportioned body and so a two-piece looks good on her,’ said Miguel.

‘Priyanka too has the oomph factor. Even though she is not that tall, the way she looks and carries her swimsuit is commendable. You just can’t take your eyes off her,’ he added.

The two-piece beach wear, which turns 63 this year, was invented by Jacques Heim and Louis Reard in 1946. The designer duo named it after the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the site of the atomic bomb testing.

As far as Bollywood is concerned, the bikini has surely come of age over the years with actresses opening up to the idea of wearing sexy swimsuits on screen.

In 1958, Nutan took the Hindi film industry by storm when she wore the swimming costume in ‘Dilli Ka Thug’. Her colleagues like Saira Banu and Vyjayanthimala too scorched the silver screen when they slipped into the costume for ‘April Fool’ and ‘Sangam’ respectively.

Later, Bollywood beauties like Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi dared to wear the two-piece on screen, but actresses after them shied away from the swimsuit. However, Dimple Kapadia, who slipped into the two-piece for Raj Kapoor’s ‘Bobby’, wore it again for her comeback film ‘Sagar’.

Now, it is no more taboo and actresses like Bipasha, Neha Dhupia, Minissha Lamba and Amisha Patel have carried off tiny two-pieces with confidence.

Miguel also feels these actresses should be applauded as they have overcome the hypocritical mindset of society and proved that even a two-piece suit can be carried with grace if you have the body and confidence.

Ratnani points out that photographers too play a pivotal role in deciding how a bikini looks on a woman.

‘The persons shooting these actresses play a pivotal role because if they don’t bring in their creative aesthetics together to click their pictures, the result could be disastrous. A photographer or a camera person can either make a picture or scene look natural, classy or vulgar,’ Ratnani stressed.

‘Small things like light arrangements, right lenses, background location and camera angles also play an important role in bringing out the best from these beauties,’ he added.

According to photographer Jatin Kampani, there should also be a ‘comfort level’ between the actresses and the camera person shooting her in a swim-suit.

‘While shooting a female in a bikini, one should have a great rapport with that person. She has to share a comfort level with the photographer … only then there would be no inhibitions and she too will be comfortable on screen,’ Kampani explained.

Kampani said that he would never recommend clicking an actress in a bikini if she is not in shape.

‘She will look awful,’ he exclaimed.

Kampani has no Bollywood favourites but says most of them have got great bodies.

‘But the most important factor is how effortlessly they carry their two piece. Not everyone can carry it with aplomb. One has to be comfortable with one’s body; only then things do magic on screen.’

Saif and I will be smouldering hot in ‘Agent Vinod’: Kareena

Mumbai, April 7 (IANS) Kareena Kapoor is finally going to play a full-fledged role in Saif Ali Khan’s home production ‘Agent Vinod’. She wants the spy drama to be hot and says even the posters will be designed to portray them as Bollywood’s ‘coolest hot pair’.

It is being said that in the beginning, Kareena’s role in the film was relatively less substantial than Saif’s.

When quizzed, Kareena told IANS: ‘Do you think I’d agree to be part of the film if my role was not as exciting as Saif? I mean, can you imagine what would happen? Saif and I will be smouldering hot in ‘Agent Vinod’. Even the posters will be designed to highlight us as the coolest hot pair.’

A source close to the project added: ‘In fact Kareena wasn’t sure she wanted to do ‘Agent Vinod’ because the title clearly indicated whom the film belonged to. But Saif convinced Kareena that her role would be at par with his. Then he convinced Sriram (Raghavan), with whom Saif has a deep rapport since they did ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ (2004), to make sure Kareena’s presence in the film is justified.’

And here is where the problem creeps in. While Saif-Kareena are looking to do a high-gloss big-budget espionage thriller, director Raghavan is looking at making a gritty life-like spy drama.

Raghavan admits that the film will be more in the mood of Mani Shankar’s ‘Mukhbiir’ than director Deepak Bahry’s 1977 movie ‘Agent Vinod’. At the same time he says the high budget of the new-age ‘Agent Vinod’ forbids any over-experimentation.

‘I grew up watching those really filmy spy films like ‘Farz’, ‘Aankhen’, ‘Yakeen’ and of course Rajshris’ ‘Agent Vinod’. I’ve been fascinated by the genre. However, times have changed and so have definitions of espionage. My film will occupy a more real space,’ said Raghavan.

‘I’ve never worked on this kind of budget before. And I can’t afford to be experimental. The market has to be kept in mind. So there will be music and songs. But no lip sync songs,’ said Rahgavan.

Now the big news is that Bebo will be presented an award for her contribution to art and cinema by the world-renowned environmental activist Erin Brokovich.

For the uninitiated, Erin Brokovich is the American legal clerk and environmentalist with no formal education in law and was the subject of the 2000 movie with Julia Roberts in the lead. The title role had gotten Julia an Oscar for Best Actress.

Erin would be flying to Mumbai to present this award. Kareena sure is a lucky girl.

Now wonder she considers herself to be a bracket above than the Katrinas, the Bipashas and the Deepikas of B-Town.
