The top 10 ‘inventions’ that changed the world

London, Mar 13 (ANI): Credit cards, trainer shoes, social networking sites, and GPS technology have made it to the list of things that have changed the world.

To mark the National Science and Engineering Week, a panel of 20 experts from the British Science Association have drawn up a list of the top 10 things that have changed the world, reports The Telegraph.

Here is the list in full:

1.GPS Technology

Originally developed as a navigation system by the United States military, the Global Positioning System is now used in cars, aircraft and boats.

2.The Sony Walkman

In 1979 Sony spawned the era of wearable technology with its iconic personal stereo. The Walkman quickly changed listening habits and became hugely popular as jogging culture took the 1980s by storm.

3.The Bar code

The boring sets of black and white lines can now be found on almost every single item bought from a shop. Norman Woodland first developed an early form of the bar code in 1949 by combining ideas from movie soundtracks and Morse code to help him speed up store checkouts. And now stores can instantly access product details, prices and stock levels with a sweep of a laser.

4.TV Dinners

Convenience food really took off in the 1970s and transformed the way families ate meals, the high-street, the countryside and national health. Traditional family dinners around the table disappeared and pre-packaged “ready meals” eaten on the sofa became the norm.

5.PlayStation

Although games consoles had been around for some time, Sony’s PlayStation took gaming out of spotty teenager’s bedrooms and into adult living rooms when it was released in 1994.

6.Social Networking

Everyday, more than three billion minutes are spent by computer users on Facebook. Along with other social networking sites such as MySpace and Twitter, it has completely changed the way we interact and who we interact with.

Millions of people now communicate tiny details of their professional and personal lives by poking, twittering and posting. Online social networking has allowed people to rekindle friendships with friends they lost touch with years ago.

7.Text messages

Text messaging has created a new vocabulary and new grammar that is almost incomprehensible to those who do not use it. LOL and FYI have now passed into everyday English.

8.Electronic Money

Credit cards gave us greater convenience for spending, greater security and the ability to spend money anywhere in the world.

9.Microwaves

Microwaves – electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging between 1 millimetre and one metre – are used by mobile phones, wireless broadband internet and satellite television.

They also gave us a new way of cooking food while the US military has developed a “less-than-lethal” weapon that can blast victims with a heat wave.

10.Trainers

Trainers changed fashion and the feet of generations ever since the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company first used a new manufacturing process to meld rubber to cloth in 1892.

With the help of celebrity endorsements by sporting superstars such as basketball legend Michael Jordan, trainers turned from being purely practical clothing for sport into a fashion item. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus slams media for condemning her cleavage-baring top

Washington, Mar 03 (ANI): Pop star Miley Cyrus has lashed out at the media for unnecessarily condemning her cleavage baring top, which she wore while jogging with shirtless beau Justin Gatson.

The ‘Hannah Montana’ actress said that her cleavage-baring picture was made a big deal when all she was doing was jog.

“I don’t get the big whoop, but whatever,” Us Weekly magazine quoted Cyrus as saying on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM show.

“I guess it’s just… I’m not allowed to jog any more,” Cyrus added.

The New York Post remarked that the 16-year-old singer put herself “on full display … in a cleverly crafted photo op that would make green with envy.”

However, the entertainer has lashed out at the media saying that they took pictures and put their own anecdote to it.

“I don’t get why people are allowed to take pictures and make them something they’re not, but I guess that’s just how their job works and how they’ll make the most money,” Cyrus said. (ANI)

Excessive use of video game consoles can cause ’skin sores’

London, February 25 (ANI): UK skin specialists have warned that excessive use of video game consoles can lead to a skin disorder, dubbed PlayStation palmar hidradenitis.

Describing this condition in the British Journal of Dermatology, the researchers have revealed that a 12-year-old girl had to attend a Swiss hospital recently after having intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands.

They say that the little girl, who was a regular user of a games console, recovered fully after 10 days of abstinence.

The report further reveals that upon examining the girl, doctors at the Geneva University Hospital concluded that she had a condition known as ‘idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis’-a condition that generally causes red, sore lumps on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

The disorder, previously found on the soles of the feet in children taking part in heavy physical activity like jogging,is thought to be linked to intense sweating.

The patient’s parents revealed that she played video games for several hours a day, and had continued to play even after developing the sores.

The doctors suspected that tight and continuous grasping of the console’shand-grips, repeated pushing of the buttons, and sweating caused by the tension of the game might have triggered the problem.

“This is an interesting discovery and one that the researchers are keen to share with other dermatologists, should they be confronted with similar, unexplained symptoms in a patient,” the BBC quoted Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, as saying.

“If you’re worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don’t play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating,” Goad added.

A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd, manufacturers of PlayStation, said: “We do not wish to belittle this research and will study the findings with interest.

This is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature.” (ANI)

Mischa Barton’s secret behind tiny waist – Pilates

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): ‘The O.C.’ star Mischa Barton has revealed that Pilates is the secret behind her slim frame.

She said: “For me, it’s all about Pilates recently. I’m obsessed with Pilates. I think it’s so fun.”

The 23-year-old actress had recently sparked concerns for her health after displaying an increasingly thin physique, reports the China Daily.

Mischa hit out at critics of her weight loss, insisting she has never embarked on faddy diets or extreme exercise regimes.

She added to America’s OK! magazine: “I don’t do any crash diets. There’s nothing that I really do like that, because I’m always working. I mean, before I go do a film, I do workout more. I do get ready for a film and try to be healthy and in shape. And when I’m not working, I do less of it.

“I do more cardio because I work long hours. Jogging, running – tuff like that’s really good before you do a film so you have more energy.” (ANI)

Exercise can help cut colon cancer risk

Washington, Feb 12 (ANI): Exercise can lower the risk of colon cancer, says a new study.

To reach the conclusion, researchers at Washington University School of
Medicine in St. Louis and Harvard University combined and analyzed several decades worth of data from past studies on how exercise affects colon cancer risk.

They found that people who exercised the most were 24 percent less likely to develop the disease than those who exercised the least.

“What’s really compelling is that we see the association between exercise and lower colon cancer risk regardless of how physical activity was measured in the studies,” says lead study author Kathleen Y. Wolin, Sc.D., a cancer prevention and control expert with the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University.

“That indicates that this is a robust association and gives all the more evidence that physical activity is truly protective against colon cancer,” the expert added.

The study has been published in the British Journal of Cancer.

In the study, researchers analyzed 52 studies going back as far as 1984, making their analysis the most comprehensive to date.

After scrutinizing, scientists found the protective effect of exercise held for all types of physical activity, whether that activity was recreational, such as jogging, biking or swimming, or job related, such as walking, lifting or digging. (ANI)

Pink, Carey Hart spark reconciliation rumours

Melbourne, Jan 19 (ANI): Pink and her estranged hubby Carey Hart are set to reunite, according to reports.

The 29-year-old ‘Sober’ singer, who last February announced that she was separating from her spouse of two years, has sparked rumours that she is rekindling her romance with the pro motocross racer after they were seen jogging together in Los Angeles, reports News.com.au.

The star pair was, apparently, spotted gazing at each other and walked arm-in-arm after their workout. And later broke into a play fight.

The couple also spent New Years’ Eve together at a party held at Carey’s Las Vegas nightclub Wasted Space.(ANI)
