Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Iran’s controversial new Defence Minister Ahmad Vahid has warned Israel not to attack the country’s nuclear facilities.
“Every move from the Zionist entity against Iran will be met with a harsh and powerful response from Iran,” The Jerusalem Post quoted him, Vahidi saying.
Vahidi also said that the overwhelming support he had garnered in the parliamentary vote on his appointment “attested to the anti-Zionist spirit of the Iranian parliament and people.”
Vahidi is a wanted by Interpol for masterminding the Buenos Aires Jewish centre bomb blast in 1994 that claimed 85 lives.
Buenos Aires has called General Vahidi’s inclusion in Ahmadinejad’s new Cabinet “an affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack”.
US President Barack Obama has termed Vahidi’s inclusion in the Cabinet as “disturbing”.
Vahidi gained support earlier this week when lawmakers said they would not bow to foreign pressures to reject him.
The chairman of the Iranian foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said the allegations “will not have any negative impact on the assessment” of General Vahidi’s suitability for the job.
“Rather, it may increase his vote,” he noted.
Ahmadinejad has faced questions about the experience and expertise of some of the choices for his 21-seat cabinet. But on Thursday, he managed to win approval for many key posts that included the foreign, interior, intelligence ministries and Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister.
The parliament also backed Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, making her the Islamic republic’s first female minister since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. (ANI)

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Nicotine replacement therapy at least four weeks before surgery can almost halve the risk of poor wound healing in smokers, suggest researchers.
“It is not easy to quit smoking just before an operation,” said Professor Peter Sawicki, the Institute’s Director.
“But people who smoke are more likely to have complications after surgery than people who do not smoke,” he added.
Experts from German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) have revealed that nicotine replacement therapy can help people quit smoking and avoid complications after surgery.
It helps reduce withdrawal symptoms when people stop smoking by giving them nicotine through a patch or chewing gum.
The study has shown that only 14 percent of the patients who smoked had problems with wound healing if they had nicotine replacement therapy at least four weeks before surgery, compared to 28 percent of the patients who did not have nicotine replacement therapy.
“Anaesthetics and surgery put a strain on the body’s oxygen supply as it is,” said Professor Sawicki.
“Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that is available in the blood even more, making it more difficult for wounds to heal – a process which requires oxygen,” he added.
The study appears on informedhealthonline.org. (ANI)

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): People who are poor at saving money are likely to have impulsive behaviour such as overeating, smoking and infidelity, according to a new study.
The study conducted through the BBC website measured people’s financial impulsivity by asking whether they would they prefer to receive 45 pounds in three days or 70 pounds in three months.
The findings revealed that nearly half of those who preferred the smaller-sooner sum of money were more likely to show a raft of other impulsive behaviours.
“One of the big questions about people’s financial planning is whether decisions to spend or save come from personal knowledge and experience of money matters or whether they reflect someone’s personality more generally,” said Dr Stian Reimers, ESRC Centre for Economic Learning and Social Evolution at UCL.
“Our research shows that people with an impulsive money-today attitude ignore the future in other ways.
“For example, they are more likely to smoke and more likely to be overweight, which may reflect a preference for immediate pleasure of nicotine and food over long-term good health,” Reimers added.
Moreover, people who chose to take the smaller-sooner amount of money were also more likely to admit to having had an affair in recent years.
The study also showed that those most likely to make impulsive financial choices were young, poorly educated, and on lower incomes.
“Learning to make decisions that lead to long-term happiness, not just instantaneous gratification, could benefit us all. Simple techniques can help reduce impulsivity: like imagining how you’d feel about your decision in a year’s time, or trying to avoid making decisions in the heat of the moment,” Reimers added.
The study appears in journal Personality and Individual Differences. (ANI)

Melbourne, Aug 19 (ANI): The Federal Government in Australia has decided to take a look into the massive diet and weight-loss industry, following reports that the obesity rate in the country is still climbing.
Weight-loss programs and products will have to prove that they can help people keep off the kilos long-term as the Federal Government cracks down on the 414-million dollar-a-year industry.
The Kevin Rudd Government’s Preventative Health Taskforce is understood to have called for the weight-loss industry to be regulated in a report handed down last month.
It follows growing evidence that diets may actually be adding to the obesity crisis, as overweight people lose weight rapidly while following programs, but quickly put it back on after they stop.
The taskforce said that young women in particular were spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on such programs to manage their weight.
Despite this, the nation’s obesity rate was climbing with more than 60 per cent of adults now overweight or obese.
While weight-loss programs and pharmacy-based meal replacement programs were popular, the task force said there was limited data to show they were actually effective.
It wants a wide-ranging review of diet products and a common code of practice drawn up covering the cost, the training of counsellors and the promotion of the diets.
The Dietitians Association of Australia is backing the recommendation.
According to the Daily Telegraph, a spokesman said all commercial diet programs should be assessed by a body of experts similar to the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which assesses drugs for safety and efficacy before they can go on sale.
The association said regulation should require businesses marketing a diet program to provide evidence to a panel of experts showing what percentage of those who used the diet kept the weight off two years after starting.
Chief executive Claire Hewat said a good diet would result in weight loss of about half a kilogram per week.
“If you can lose 5 per cent of your body weight you are doing really well,” News.com.au quoted her as saying.
“Diets are not the point, it’s lifestyle change that is needed,” she stated. (ANI)

Islamabad, Aug.19 (ANI): A Swat anti-terrorism court has declared Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Swat chapter chief Mullah Fazlullah and his six associates ‘proclaimed offenders.’
The court has asked Fazlullah and his aides to appear before it within the next seven days.
More than 100 cases, including that of murder and attempt to murder have been registered against the militant leader who is also known as Radio Mullah, The News reports.
Reports in the media suggested that Fazlullah has been seriously injured in a drone strike and is on his death bed, but the Taliban has rejected all such reports, saying he is in good health and hiding somewhere in the Swat Valley.
However, the authorities have failed to ascertain where he has taken refuge.
Meanwhile, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) has asked the district coordination officer (DCO) to submit records relevant to three sons of Tanzim Nifaz Shariat-i-Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Muhammad.
A single bench court, headed by Justice Dost Muhammad Khan, directed the DCO to submit the record on August 20.
Sufi’s sons Rizwanullah, Hayatullah and Ziaullah, who were arrested along with their father, had challenged their detention in the court.
In his petition, Rizwanullah has claimed that he had been settled in Saudi Arabia for last 13-14 years. Hayatullah was a PTC teacher in a government school in Maidan in Lower Dir and Ziaullah was doing his post-graduation in Islamiyat from Malakand University. (ANI)

Washington, August 17 (ANI): Health experts in India will begin clinical trials to determine the efficacy of the first dry powder inhalable vaccine for measles next year, according to a report.
Presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington on Sunday, the report points out that measles sickens millions of infants and children, and kills almost 200,000 annually in India.
Dr. Robert Sievers, who leads the team that developed the dry-powder vaccine, said that it was a perfect fit for use in back-roads areas of developing countries, which often lack the electricity for refrigeration, clean water, and sterile needles needed to administer traditional liquid vaccines.
“Childhood vaccines that can be inhaled and delivered directly to mucosal surfaces have the potential to offer significant advantages over injection. Not only might they reduce the risk of infection from HIV, hepatitis, and other serious diseases due to unsterilized needles, they may prove more effective against disease,” he said.
“Many serious infections, such as the measles virus, can enter the body through inhalation. Measles vaccine dry powders have the potential to effectively vaccinate infants, children and adults by inhalation, avoiding the problems associated with liquid vaccines delivered by injection,” he added.
Sievers, of the University of Colorado, Boulder, has revealed that he took inspiration for the new vaccine from research on how people inhale tiny airborne droplets of air pollutants.
To create an inhalable vaccine, he and his colleagues a patented process known as the Carbon Dioxide-Assisted Nebulization with a Bubble Dryer (CAN-BD).
The researcher said that the weakened measles virus is mixed with “supercritical” carbon dioxide – part gas, part liquid – to produce microscopic bubbles and droplets, which then are dried to make an inhalable powder.
The powder is puffed into a small, cylindrical, plastic sack, with an opening like the neck of a plastic water bottle, and administered.
“By taking one deep breath from the sack, a child could be effectively vaccinated,” Sievers said.
He says that, in animal tests, the inhaler has been found to be just as effective in delivering measles vaccine as the traditional injection.
The researchers are now working on an inexpensive dry powder inhaler that would deliver measles or influenza vaccines to developing nations, and could be used elsewhere.
They believe that the new method may also do away with the problem of people refusing inoculations because of their fear of needles.
Sievers says if the inhaler passes final safety and effectiveness tests, the Serum Institute of India Ltd. expects a demand growing to 400 million doses of measles vaccine a year.
“Human clinical trials are expected to begin next year in India, after animal safety studies are completed this year.
About two-thirds of the world’s deaths due to measles occur in that nation. Worldwide, several hundred people die every day from measles-related disease,” he said. (ANI)

London, Aug 17 (ANI): British children spend ten hours a day glued to TVs, computers, mobiles and games consoles, according to a new survey.
The survey by energy firm Npower found that square-eyed youngsters aged seven to 16 spend a shocking four months a year – staring at screens.
Experts warn that by shunning outdoor games, kids are risking their health.
The health risks include asthma and damage to the brain’s vital prefrontal cortex, leading to obesity and movement difficulties.
The computer took up most of kids’ time, with the average child spending three hours and 44 minutes surfing the web. They also devoted two hours and 43 minutes to the TV.
In the survey, kids admitted they would ‘feel lost’ without their gadgets. However, the poll of 3,000 youngsters found a third suffered from headaches.
Medical expert Dr Carol Cooper warned kids should not spend more than three hours a day in front of electronic screens.
“They are facing a variety of health problems,” the Sun quoted her as saying. (ANI)

London, Aug 13 (ANI): A five year-old obese Indian girl, who is suffering from a suspected hormonal imbalance, is eating herself to death.
Suman Khatun, from West Bengal, is so insatiably hungry that she devours over 10 kilograms of rice, 24 eggs, six litres of milk and five kilos of potatoes in just a week.
Despite being only three and half feet tall, Suman’s weighs in at almost 12 stone.
Her parents, who earn just 6 pounds a week, are struggling to meet their daughter’s demands.
“We can not feed ourselves or our other two children, let alone ourselves,” the Telegraph quoted Suman’s mother Belly Bibi, 33, a saying.
“When she is not fed she cries, shouts, screams and has even thrown rocks at us.
“We give her four square meals a day and two small lunches, but this is never enough.
“She is our daughter and we have no choice but to feed her,” she added.
Suman’s hunger even leads her to sneak out and pester her neighbours for food in the village of Metiala.
Neighbours say that also expect a daily knock on the door from her.
Faruq Khan said: “Every day we open our doors to a smiling Suman.”
“She comes to play with our daughter, but always ends up asking for biscuits or some roti (Indian bread).”
“It is no trouble at all for us, but it is difficult for her parents,” Khan added.
Suman’s family has been unable to afford to travel to Calcutta for expert medical treatment because of their daughter’s appetite.
“We have relied on the local doctor here who believes that Suman suffers from a hormonal problem,” Suman’s father Jalal Khan, 37, said.
“We are desperate to get her help, because we worry for Suman’s health, which is not good,” Jalal added.
Suman struggles to walk as she suffers from severe respiratory problems. (ANI)

It indeed is ironic that Akshay Kumar who is one of the stars who has popularized Jeans as an attire and symbolizing youth is being tormented reportedly for an obscene gesture while promoting a new brand of Jeans. In fact Jeans as attire had a late debut in the Hindi films but after it got an endorsement from our film stars it became the attire symbolic of youth and energy.
It was the advent of Jeans that led to development of notion of health conscious and to have a toned body. It also had its rub-off effect on the female actors as well, and if a fault line were to be discerned that really swayed a nation in a big way and pushed it on to a journey of Jeans discovery, the campaign of Coke involving Aishwarya Rai could be one such fault line. Dressed simply in a white shirt and Jeans she apart from swaying Aamir Khan off his feet was able to literally swoon the whole country as well.
From the previous generation it was in SHOLAY that Jeans made its debut in a big way as attire that had element of rebel and exuberance of youth written on it, and it got manifest in the characters portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. As a matter of fact in SHOLAY for the first time probably in Hindi cinema, Big B had packaged a pair of Jeans with a Black shirt and it became a fashion statement.
As the generational shift acquired its mooring, Jeans slowly weeded out hose pipe pants and flaring bell bottoms, and it became the fabric which defined the chutzpah of the character. In ANDHA KANNON after a long time Amitabh Bachchan had returned to Jeans in a big way, and again the element of casual that he had brought to his character of Jaanisaar Khan got manifested in a big way through Jeans as well.
The generation of Big B probably did not patronize Jeans in a big way owing probably to the fact that this generation was at the cusp of nationalism, where Jeans still was considered as western attire.
But as the new generation made its debut in Hindi cinema, brought on the profuse dozes of Abba, BoneyM, Pink Floyd and Woodstock, Jeans came to make their presence felt in a big way in the world of Hindi cinema. The same kind of paradigm shift was noticed in case of the female actors as well, and experimentation with Jeans as an attire by the female actors also allowed them to experiment with their looks as well. If there was one film that can be considered as a film that promoted Jeans in a big way it was JAANBAAZ and it can always be a matter of debate whether Dimple Kapadia looked more beautiful in a Jeans in JAANBAAZ or in SAAGAR. Jury would go in favor of JAANBAAZ. Incidentally, Feroze Khan can be considered as the father figure of Jeans in Indian films, as right from the time when he made DHARMATAMA, followed by QUARBANI and YALGAAR, to JANBAAZ, his films are a living tribute to the humble Jeans in its most alluring manifestations.
It is a tribute to the fascination of Jeans that a film by name of JEANS was made in Hindi and the female character in this film was enacted by Aishwarya Rai sheer coincidence or fortuitousness, decision is left to sail in the wind. Even a song was written on Jeans epitomizing its association with youth, “Purani Jeans Aur Guitar”…
Jeans as it represents youth, the sense of aghast that is being experienced by the purists, may be condoned as an indulgence and exuberance of youth and nothing else.
Jeans represents youth and youth is allowed to err sometimes, but the magnanimity of the elders is to condone it and allow moving on.

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
She made quite a few men say ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ more than three years back with her Bollywood debut flick. Ever since then Tanushree Dutta has continued to sizzle but currently she is making heads turn with a fitter and better look. Result? Tanushree Dutta is looking forward to the rest of 2009 and making sure that she is expected to be the talk of the town for many more months to come. The young woman took a sabbatical in 2008 (with SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX being her sole release), only to reassess her plans for 2009.
Is Tanushree, with this fitter look, following any particular regime? ”For last few months, I have been following a good routine and have become more conscious about my health and figure. I have toned up as well as lost weight. I have been doing work outs on a regular basis and my focus now is to look good, stay fit and wear clothes that suit me best!” Avows Tanushree.
So size zero is on the way?
But Tanushree holds a different view, ”No ways! I don’t think I will ever be a size zero. In fact even when I was loosing weight, I was sure that I didn’t want to go to an extent where I turned into size zero. Even people prefer me in full size and that’s the way I want to do be. Over and above that, I just wish to work with complete conviction; that should keep me happy.”
But frankly, considering the distance Tanushree’s contemporaries are going today; one feels that she is still holding herself back a little when it comes to her recent photo shoots. Tanushree defends, ”I think you can go on to be a lot bolder if you are close to size zero. When you are fuller, you have to draw a line somewhere. Same holds good for me as well due to the kind of body structure that I have. So for me to pose in front of a camera and wear a particular kind of outfit, I have to tread the path carefully. An inch here or there and you end up crossing the fine line between being sexy and vulgar. Moreover, as the adage goes, there is more appeal in hiding than showing skin!”

Treviso, Italy – Food security and efforts to stabilize global food prices were set to dominate the first-ever meeting of agriculture ministers from the Group of Eight (G8) which began Saturday.
But the potentially divisive issue of protectionism was also likely to crop up in the talks which are being held near the northeastern Italian city of Treviso and are scheduled to run until April 20.
Setting some of the tone on the topic on Saturday, was Italian Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia, whose country currently holds the G8 presidency.
Declaring himself a “believer in the (free) market,” Zaia however added that “if the alternative is closing hundreds or thousands of farms, then I don’t have doubts: I will fight to maintain (import) duties.”
But speaking to reporters on Saturday ahead of the talks with his counterparts from the other G8 nations – US, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Canada and Russia – Zaia confirmed that food security remained the main issue.
A policy document, prepared by the Italian presidency ahead of the talks calls for “immediate interventions” aimed at doubling by 2050 global agriculture production to ensure that the world’s fast-growing population have enough to eat.
Zaia said provisions to boost food security would be contained in a final document prepared by the G8 agriculture ministers for the end of the three-day meeting.
However, with food security being about both “quantity and quality,” Zaia said he intended to put forward Italy’s case for the “defence of genuine products.”
“Out of 10 food products in the world billed as Italian, only one actually comes from Italy,” he said.
The need to fight counterfeit foods such as cheese “made in China but being sold as Italian mozzarella,” was linked to ensuring health standards and should be of major international concern he added.
Zaia said the measures contained in the document would also be fruit of consultation with agriculture ministers from Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, Argentina, Australia and Egypt who have also been invited to attend several sessions of the meeting.
“I am confident the document we adopt here will be accepted by the G8 summit,” Zaia said, referring to the main meeting of G8 government leaders scheduled for July.
G8 agriculture ministers also plan to look at ways to stabilize prices, especially in the wake of the sharp increase for commodities such as wheat and rice in 2008 – a situation that triggered riots in dozens of nations.
While prices have since fallen by as much as 40-50 per cent, they are still well above their pre-crisis levels with global cereal prices for example, still some 70 per cent higher than in 2005.
The price hike has had a major impact in pushing the number of the world’s undernourished people to 963 million, as estimated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. (dpa)

Washington – In a landmark ruling Friday, US President Barack Obama’s administration found that greenhouse gases threaten US air quality and public health, setting the stage for new limits on industry emissions that cause global warming.
The so-called “endangerment finding” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had long been anticipated by environmental groups and marks the latest shift on US climate policy since Obama took office in January.
The ruling, which now has to be submitted for public comment for 60 days, would allow the government to regulate greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide under existing clean air laws in the United States.
“This finding confirms that greenhouse gas pollution is a serious problem now and for future generations,” EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in a statements.
Former president George W Bush had rejected imposing mandatory limits on climate-damaging pollution and the decision comes nearly two years after the US Supreme Court ruled that the EPA must consider regulating greenhouse gases under the existing Clean Air Act, a 1990 US law governing air pollution.
The US is taking its first steps as a nation to confront climate change,” said Vickie Patt of the climate group Environmental Defense Fund. “EPAs action is a wake up-call for national policy solutions that secure our economic and environmental future.”
The EPA’s ruling could pave the way for tougher federal standards on emissions from cars, power plants and other sources global warming.
But it remains unclear how far the administration will use this authority. Congress is considering new legislation this year to create a cap-and-trade system that would force polluting companies to pay for their emissions.
Jackson, while not yet announcing any new limits, said the “solution” to global warming was finding ways to encourage green energy technologies. (dpa)

Singapore – Child-care centres and kindergartens in Singapore are stepping up cleaning of classrooms as the number of children coming down with hand, foot and mouth disease nears the official “epidemic level,” a newspaper reported Thursday.
Last week, 653 people were affected by the disease, 12 short of the Health Ministry’s official epidemic level, the Straits Times said.
The number of cases was expected to rise from April to May, one of two traditional peak infection times for the disease with the other being August and October.
There were 4,926 hand, foot and mouth disease cases in the first 13 weeks of this year, compared with 4,423 for the same period last year when a 3-year-old boy died from an inflammation of the brain lining caused by the disease.
Seven Singapore children died from it during an outbreak from 2000 to 2001. Hand, foot and mouth disease usually hits children under 10.
The symptoms are usually mild and include ulcers and blisters in the mouth, rashes on the hands and feet, and fever.
The illness usually passes within a week without treatment, but a small minority of cases become life-threatening, mainly because of neurological complications – such as encephalitis, meningitis and paralysis – as well as lung haemorrhages.
The virus is highly infectious and transmitted through saliva, blister fluid and faeces. There is no vaccine.
For now, no child-care centres have been ordered to close because the cases have been spread out rather than clustered in any particular area. Authorities have closed them in the past several years during the worst outbreaks. (dpa)

Yet another speculation has bit the dust. Viveck Vaswani, producer of DULHA MIL GAYA, has quashed rumors that his film that has Shah Rukh Khan in a ‘very special appearance’, would be clashing with Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer WANTED. In fact he is unwilling to commit on any date around the release of DULHA MIL GAYA till Shah Rukh Khan completes his portion for the film.
“It would be foolish of any film maker to announce the date of release before his film’s principal shooting is through”, exclaims Viveck Vaswani who has been patiently waiting for the last song of the film, a ‘qawalli’, to be shot, “I have not penciled in on even a month of the release so far, let aside a date.”
But there are some ’sources’ out there who are hell bent on announcing Shah Rukh Khan v/s Salman Khan clash on 3rd July?
“Well God bless these sources”, says Viveck in a sarcastic tone, “None of these sources approached me to confirm around the release date. Moreover, even I heard about the so called confirmation only from the media.”
It appears to be yet another way of media attempting at igniting fire between Shah Rukh and Salman?
“Who knows, there are pages to be filled and spice to be generated! People may write what they want but till the time Shah Rukh gives dates for the final days of the film’s shoot, I am not announcing any date whatsoever”, shrugs Viveck.
So when is Shah Rukh beginning to shoot for the film?
“I don’t know and frankly I am not even asking him about it”, Viveck says with a straight face, “See, Shah Rukh got injured on my sets and his condition aggravated there. Till the time he hasn’t healed himself completely, I can’t even think of asking for his dates.”
“Moreover, even after he is full ready, I will ask him for the dates only once I am fully comfortable that any more shooting won’t jeopardize his condition. He is a friend and what matters most is his health. I can wait for some more weeks for my film to arrive”, he adds.
While the shooting of ‘qawalli’ may take 6-7 days, Shah Rukh’s shots for the song would be wrapped up in a matter of two days post which he would be through with his portions for DULHA MIL GAYA.
Directed by Mudassar Aziz and with music by Lalit Pandit, DULHA MIL GAYA stars Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan in lead roles along with Mohit Chadha and Tara Sharma.

Sarajevo – Management of the Sarajevo public transport company (GRAS) reached an agreement late Monday with the drivers’ union to end a crippling work stoppage.
After a day of negotiations, GRAS promised to clear the backlog, including salaries for the last few months and payments to health and pension funds that are owed from last year.
The drivers launched their strike at 4 am Monday. Students and employees had to drive, take cabs or walk, contributing to already chaotic downtown traffic in the city of more than 500,000 people.
The average salary in GRAS is about 10 per cent above the national average
