New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Deeply upset over the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) giving a clean chit to Jagdish Tytler in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, many Sikhs here said it was timed to help Tytler, the Congress candidate from Delhi Northeast, with the Lok Sabha elections in mind.
They said their faith in the probe agency has been eroded.
‘The Congress is helping its leaders by giving them senior positions, and to make it worse the party has now given a ticket to Jagdish Tytler,’ said Surjit Singh, who heads the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims’ welfare society.
‘What does the Congress want to convey by giving tickets to such candidates?’ he asked.
‘We want the Delhi government to take all steps for the rehabilitation of the riot victims, but it is not possible during the Congress rule. That is why we appeal to the people to punish the Congress and dethrone them,’ he said.
Amrit Singh Lovely, an anti-sikh riot victim, voicing his anger, said: ‘Despite the CBI’s move, we will continue our fight against the accused till our last breath. But now our trust in the investigating agency is shattered.’
The CBI, while giving its final report in the case in a court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit, pleaded that the case against Tytler be cancelled.
According to a CBI statement, affidavits in the case by two people, Surender Singh and Jasbir Singh, were inconsistent and contradictory.
The court will now conduct the hearing on April 9.
Soon after news of Tytler being given the clean chit spread, hundreds of Sikhs started shouting slogans against the Congress, the CBI and Tytler as well as other senior Congress leaders like Sajjan Kumar for their alleged involvement in the riots.
Protests were also witnessed outside the Congress office.
Reacting strongly to the CBI’s clean chit, H.S. Phoolka, counsel for Sikh riots victims who has spearheaded one of the longest and most tortuous legal battles to gain justice for the victims, said the verdict was ‘upsetting’.
‘Ever since the case went to the CBI, the agency has been eager to give Tytler a clean chit. We will not give up our fight yet,’ said Phoolka.
‘It is sad to see that even before the seal of the final report was opened, Tytler knew that he had got a clean chit. The CBI is working hand in glove with the accused.’
Tytler was among three prominent Delhi Congress leaders accused of having incited mobs. The two other leaders named were Sajjan Kumar, who is contesting the LOk Sabha poll from South Delhi, and the late H.K.L. Bhagat.
Around 3,000 Sikhs were killed during the riots that broke out in Delhi and neighbouring areas after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards to avenge the army entering the Golden Temple to flush out Khalistani militants.

New Delhi, Mar 4 (ANI): Jennifer Aniston has revealed that she never knew that she would be upstaged by the dogs that worked with her in her new movie ‘Marley and Me’.
The former ‘Friends’ star has confessed that she and co-star often had to struggle to steal the limelight from their canine co-stars while shooting for the film.
In the film, 22 different Golden Labradors played the character of Marley, reports the China Daily.
Joking about the dogs at the UK premiere of the film in London’s Leicester Square, the 40-year-old actress said: “They didn’t warn us about that. Those dogs in the movie were really good!”
Wilson, on the other hand, laughingly revealed that the dogs didn’t always behave themselves during filming.
He said: “There was one scene where one of the Labradors kind of lifted his leg and he wasn’t supposed to.”
In fact, the actor’s own pet Garcia has done a cameo in the movie.
The ‘Wedding Crashers’ star insisted that he and Jennifer enjoyed working with the loveable animals because they were both dog owners.
He said: “I had a real soft spot for Copper, who was a 25-year-old Labrador. But they all did great.”
Based on the best-selling autobiographical book by John Grogan, ‘Marley and Me’ traces the story of a young married couple who end up buying a puppy which they soon realise is the “world’s worst dog”. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): Joaquin Phoenix’s rep has slammed a Chicago-based psychiatrist for claiming that the actor-turned-rapper is mentally ill.
Apparently, Paul Dobransky – a relationships expert – had told the Los Angeles Times that the 34-year-old artist may be schizophrenic, pointing to his “socially inappropriate behavior,” including a new rap career, bushy beard and a bizarre Late Night with David Letterman appearance.
But Phoenix’s rep tells MTV News: “How absolutely inappropriate for a doctor who has no personal interaction or relationship with someone to diagnose them.”
“And to do so in a public forum. Hope they spelled his name right. Another 15-minute ‘expert’ is born!” the rep added.
However, Dobransky defended Phoenix in the Times interview, saying that he was “pretty offended” by Ben Stiller’s portrayal of Phoenix at the Oscars, reports Us magazine.
He said it seemed as if Stiller was “potentially beating down on the mentally ill.”
“The jury is not exactly in on what is happening,” Dobransky said of Phoenix, whom many speculate is pulling an elaborate hoax.
“Whatever it is, it’s not funny – whether it’s drug abuse, mental illness coming on or the clumsiest attempt ever at a career change,” the doctor added.
Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line has said that his most recent film, Two Lovers, will be his last film.

Washington, Feb 27 (ANI): Canadian actor Mike Myers has been given a chance to redeem himself by the religious leaders who boycotted his flop film ‘The Love Guru’.
Hindu scholars started feeling sorry for Myers after the film picked up three dishonours at the Golden Raspberry Awards last weekend, and they’re offering the comic the chance to reverse his fortunes and get Hindus back on his side.
“If Myers visited a Hindu temple, paid his obeisance, expressed remorse, and promised not to denigrate Hinduism in his future movies, Hindus would not only absolve him but might also pray for his success in his future ventures,” Contactmusic quoted Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who led the protests against The Love Guru for lampooning Hinduism, as saying.
As well as landing the Worst Film Razzie a week ago, Myers was also named the Worst Actor and he also picked up the Worst Screenplay dishonour.
“It (The Love Guru) was one of the big disasters of the year. He managed to offend the entire Indian population,” Zed said.
“Although Myers’ temple visit would not undo the damage done to the community, it might help heal the wounds,” he added. (ANI)

Chennai, Feb 27 (ANI): AR Rahman, who won two Oscars for his original score and original song of the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, termed the crowning glory as an instance that has enhanced his self respect and also his work.
“This series of awards have given me so much respect and to the kind of work. People like extraordinary composers like Davis Foster and Mike Jagger, all these legends talked to me like equals. So that is a great thing. So we can do extraordinary musical works together,” he said while interacting with media persons at an exclusive press conference here on Thursday.
The 43-year-old music maestro said that the Oscar awards gave him an opportunity to be at par with extraordinary composers.
Further, he noted that an interesting aspect of the movie is people from different countries being associated with its production, distribution and screening.
He viewed this unique angle as a unifying trend at the world level.
“What is good about the whole thing, whole element is the British director, Indian actors, South Indian composer and an American distributor and all doing the same thing. One film that unites us all,” he added.
He is the first Indian composer to strike gold at the prestigious annual Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars.
The maestro is also only the fourth in the world ever to have won two Oscars for best composition and best song in the same year.
Last month, he was named best composer at the Golden Globes.
Despite earlier international credits such as the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ‘Bombay Dreams’, it is Rahman’s work on British director Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ that has endeared him to Western critics. (ANI)

Washington, February 25 (ANI): Kate Winslet likened her Best Actress Oscar to her mum’s victory in a pickling competition at a local pub in Britain.
After having been nominated five times earlier, the actress finally won the gong for her portrayal of a German woman with a secret Nazi past in the romantic drama “The Reader”.
Speaking after the Academy Awards, the ‘Titanic’ star added her win to her family’s previous accolade at The Retreat in Reading that saw her mum taking home a bottle of vodka in place of a coveted statuette.
“My mum won a pickled onion competition in the local pub just before Christmas and the Reading Evening Post sent me a picture of her holding her jar,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.
“Well, Reading Evening Post, here’s your next Winslet picture!” she added.
Kate also dominated this season with two Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild award, a British BAFTA and a handful of U.S. critics awards. (ANI)

New York, Feb 25 (ANI): It’s time for all those single men to brace themselves up, for actress Megan Fox has called off her engagement with fiance Brian Austin Green, and might be on the look out for a new man very soon.
The ‘Transformers’ beauty has split with Austin Green, whom she met in 2004, and with whom she got engaged in November 2006.
“The relationship had run its course. It’s completely amicable, and they are remaining friends,” the New York Daily News quoted a source close to the couple as telling Us magazine.
The insider also revealed that Fox and Green “are both focusing on their careers.”
Earlier this year, the actress had raised eyebrows when she attended the Golden Globes without her fiance.
But Green, 35, later laughed off rumours of a split with Fox, 22, saying: “We usually go have dinner and have a glass of wine and laugh about it.”
In a recent interview at a GQ bash, the actress played down any wedding plans, and said: “It’s not going to be a big wedding. I’m not one of those girls. If it happens, it will be very low-key and quick and unplanned.”
She also dismissed rumours that she and the former ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ actor might start a family together anytime soon.
She said: “I feel like I need to set my career and do a movie other than ‘Transformers.’ Then I’ll explore family.” (ANI)

Washington, February 24 (ANI): With a Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning performance in The Wrester set to boost his film career, actor Mickey Rourke can finally pay back the doctor who treated him for free for over a decade.
The therapist, whose name has not been disclosed, was a psychiatrist.
Rourke credits him, and his loyal dogs, for saving his life during a time when he had started to feel hopeless.
The actor says that he had not money to pay for his treatment, but still the analyst helped him for free up to five times a week.
“When I self destructed and everything came apart about 14 years ago. My wife had left, the career was over, I took a movie just for the paycheck, and felt like I w**red myself out,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

Patna, Feb 22 (ANI): Slum dwellers here took to the streets on Sunday saying the Oscar-nominated film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ denigrated them.
They burnt effigies of Danny Boyle, director of the film.
Protesters shouted slogans saying the film’s title humiliated them, taking objection to the word ‘dog.’
“Slum dwellers have been termed as dogs, which is insulting and abusive. Now, they are vying for the awards by abusing slum dwellers and that’s why we are protesting. The makers of the film have the right to earn fame and money, but not by insulting the poor,” said Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, general secretary of the Slum Dwellers Joint Action Committee.
At least 50 slum dwellers participated in the protest.
On February 18, a local court had deferred the trial in a suit filed against ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, in which Vishwakarma had charged that the title is offensive and derogatory.
Critically acclaimed ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has received 10 Oscar nominations.
Since the film received the Golden Globe awards, slum dwellers across India have been objecting to the word ‘dog’ in its title. (ANI)

Mumbai/Varansai, Feb 22 (ANI): As Hollywood’s Academy Awards are to get underway later on Sunday, residents of Dharavi in Mumbai, are hopeful of Oscars for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
Residents are very happy with the movie’s nomination in ten categories, hopeful that the Oscars glory would encourage slum children to move forward in life.
“If the movie wins Oscar, it would definitely take our country to new heights. After this movie, we know that children from India can do a lot. This movie would especially benefit children from poor families, as they would be encouraged to move forward in life and achieve something in life,” said Zaheer, a resident.
They are hopeful that the movie would pocket a couple of awards, having done good business across the world.
Another resident Mohammad Nafees added, “The movie should get the award. The movie has done a good business. Slum children have also worked in the movie so it would be good for them if it wins.”
The film had received mixed response across India as some slum dwellers found it offensive since it depicts the lives of impoverished Indians and the treatment of the cast.
Its director, Danny Boyle, has faced accusations from some parts of the Indian media that his film was ‘poverty porn’.
Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen disagreed with controversy and said that the movie shows reality, which everybody wants to see.
“People like to look at reality. What are we doing miles away, we don’t even know half the things. And who knows by films like this people will also come forward to want to know India. Because when I see Slumdog, I say Mercedes as well as a bullock cart run on the streets of my country,” said Sen.
Meanwhile, people in Varanasi offered special prayers to the Ganga river for the film getting honours at the Oscars.
“Today at the Ganga river bank, we are offering prayer for the Oscar nominee ‘Slumdog Millionaire’,” said Ravikant Vishvakarma, a resident.
“Slumdog Millionaire” is nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture and best director. It already has won at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the British BAFTA awards. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 21 (ANI): American actor Mickey Rourke has revealed that he fears he will not be chosen for the Best Actor Award at the Oscars, due to his edgy past relationships with Hollywood movie executives.
Rourke had to spend years away from the limelight following a couple of disagreements with film bosses.
However, his comeback movie ‘The Wrestler’ has earned him the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.
He has also been tipped for an Oscar.
Rourke, however, is still convinced that he will be shunned by the Academy on February 22 for his past hot-headed behaviour.
“It’s voted for by people from the movie business and in the past I’ve hacked them all off. I was good at that. It came easy to me. I stupidly said acting wasn’t a job for a real man,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

New York, February 21 (ANI): An aspiring model in New York City’s Brooklyn borough turned his Facebook status into a suicide note before taking his own life.
Paul Zolezzi, 30, who was tormented by heroin addiction, hanged himself in Mount Prospect Park playground near the Brooklyn Museum early Friday.
A jogger found his body dangling from the monkey bars in the playground about 7a.m., police said.
Hours earlier, Zolezzi had written on his Facebook page that he was “born in San Francisco, became a shooting star over everywhere, and ended his life in Brooklyn. … And couldn’t have asked for more.”
His mother, Stephanie Zolezzi, revealed that he had been in a downward spiral since a broken engagement two years ago.
“I would say that people get so lonely, so delusional, that all they want to do is be remembered,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying from her home near San Francisco.
“He probably wanted to be remembered in a big way, to do it dramatically. That’s what drugs will do to people,” she added.
She even revealed that her son was busted in San Francisco last fall for buying heroin and skipped town.
Zolezzi, who had come to Brooklyn just 10 days ago, crashed on the couch of friend Melissa Lopez, who said that she was disturbed by his “dark” behaviour.
“I think he was really sick. But I was in shock because you never think somebody is going to go that far,” Lopez, 33, said, explaining Zolezzi had been talking to himself.
Zolezzi’s mother revealed that she was worried about her son’s mental state and drug use because her husband, a schizophrenic writer, threw himself off the Golden Gate Bridge in his 40s.
She said that she tried to make her son check into a Christian drug rehab centre, but he baulked.
Stephanie said that she had not seen her son since September.
According to her, she came to know that he was in New York only after being called by the police, who found her number in Zolezzi’s cell phone.
“I didn’t know what was going on in his life. All I knew is that he knew I was always trying to pray for him. He needed an adjustment to his ego. He couldn’t give up the fantasies about what he wanted his life to be,” Stephanie said.
Her son broadcast some of his disillusionment on Facebook in what the social-networking site refers to as “status updates” – short messages that can be seen by other users.
The late model’s page was apparently pulled down last night. (ANI)

Vallah (Amritsar), Feb.20 (ANI): In Sikhism, the places visited by Sikh gurus during their lifetimes, have been developed into pilgrimage spots. One such place happens to be Village Vallah located near Amritsar. This place was visited by the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur.
And, about four miles from the holy city in village Vallah stands a magnificent edifice – Gurudwara Guru ka Kotha meaning Guru’s house.
It is said Guru Tegh Bahadur, while leaving Amritsar, visited this village.
Legend has it that when Guru Tegh Bahadur visited the Golden Temple after becoming Guru, priests denied him entry. The Guru thereafter went to Vallah and was entertained by Mai Haro. Her house is where the gurudwara ‘Guru ka Kotha’ now stands.
“When people of Amritsar came to know that Guru Teg Bahadurji was not allowed to enter the Golden Temple and he came to this place, they came here to take the Guru back. Guruji refused to go, but blessed the people saying that if people of Amritsar visited this Gurudwara during the fair on full moon day, they would remain happy.
Today, the holy place is visited not only by people from Punjab, but from all across the country,” said Baldev Singh, the head priest of Gurudwara Kotha Sahib..
Every year, a large number of devotees throng the holy spot to celebrate the annual fair, held on the full moon day. The month-long fair that starts on February 6 is a unique example of ardent faith and devotion.
Born in Amritsar, Guru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest of the five sons of Guru Har Gobind. His father gave the name Tegh Bahadur meaning mighty of the sword to him for showing valour during a battle with the Mughals.
During his young years Tegh Bahadur fought along his fathers’ side but after Guru Hargobind’s fierce and bloody battle in 1634 at Kartarpur, he turned to the path of renunciation and meditation.
Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 17-day stay at village Valla proved to be a blessing for the villagers.
“We come here every year to make wishes and all our wishes are fulfilled. People from all parts of the world come here to visit this gurudwara,” said Baljinder Singh, one devotee.
People visit this holy place irrespective of their caste or creed and set an example of brotherhood and unity. At the gurudwara, they enjoy the Langar or, community meal upholding the principle of equality. By Savinder Singh (ANI)

Washington, Feb 20 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire’s bosses have confirmed that the film’s child stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail will be flown to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards.
It was earlier reported that both the actors would miss the Oscars because their parents had allegedly withdrawn their permission for travelling to Los Angeles with other cast members.
However, a spokesperson for Fox Searchlight has now confirmed that two youngsters will receive A-star treatment at the glitzy ceremony at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre.
“Everybody is really excited about it. It’s nice the whole gang will be together,” Contactmusic quoted Fox Searchlight representative James Finn as saying.
Ali and Azharuddin will travel with relatives and will be put up in a five-star hotel for two days.
The film, of an 18-year-old slum boy from rags to riches, has already triumphed Golden Globes and Baftas, and has been nominated in 10 categories at the Oscars. (ANI)

Canberra, Feb 19 (ANI): Scientists have said that Australia is on the verge of a wave of extinction of species, with over 1,500 animals and plants reportedly threatened with a wipe out.
Australia has the worst mammal extinction record in the world, with 22 mammals becoming extinct in the last 200 years.
Now, according to a report carried out in news.com.au, evidence suggests Australia is on the cusp of another wave.
Over 40 scientists and land managers met in Darwin last week for a two-day meeting to discuss their research into “critical” regional extinctions across the country’s north.
“What we are seeing is a reduction both in the abundance of mammals but also for some species really catastrophic declines across their range,” said Sarah Legge, from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.
“They’ve shrunk down to 10 per cent of their former distribution (and) the frightening thing about it is the rate at which it’s happening,” she added.
“Some species have already disappeared from more than 90 per cent of their past range across the north,” she further added.
According to Dr Legge, about 1500 animals and plants were currently threatened with extinction in Australia, and “critical declines” had been noted on pastoral and indigenous lands, as well as national parks.
Among the species at risk are the Northern Quoll, Golden Bandicoot and Bilby.
“They are all declining, and doing so very rapidly. This is undoubtedly one of the major biodiversity conservation issues affecting Australia,” said Dr Legge.
“It would be heart-breaking and internationally embarrassing if we were to stand aside and witness another wave of extinctions,” she added.
“It’s clear that in Kakadu, as in Litchfield, as in Arnhem Land generally that populations of many of these mammals are declining catastrophically,” said NT government scientist John Woinarski.
The comparatively pristine environments of the NT – home to the largest remaining tropical savanna on Earth – had given governments “cause for complacency”, said Dr Woinarksi, who warned that lessons needed to be learnt from the history of mammals in central Australia.
“A hundreds years ago there were 20 species of native mammals that aren’t there now. Twenty species have become extinct in similarly remote and wild habitats,” he said.
Dr Woinarski said scientists believed a cocktail of feral cat predation, inappropriate fire regimes and over-grazing was responsible for declines.
“It’s quite likely Australia will lose a large number of species and we’ve got to act soon, in the next year or so,” said Dr Woinarski. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 18 (ANI): Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke thanked his pooches while delivering an acceptance speech after winning the Best Actor Golden Globe award, as they were there for him even in his darkest hour.
Mickey, who won the award for ‘The Wrestler’, revealed on Barbara Walters show that, when he was left alone and was almost on the verge of breaking down, his dogs were the only ones to be by his side.
“I sort of self-destructed and everything came out about fourteen years ago or so … the wife had left, the career was over, the money was not an ounce, The dogs were there when no one else was there,” People magazine quoted Mickey as saying.
Mickey revealed that after his wife Carre Otis left, he faced a major blow and he had only his dogs to make him feel wanted.
“What happened was, I was not in a really good place in my head and my heart, and I think when the wife left, it all came down and I didn’t want to be here,” Mickey said.
“Look, there’s always a weak way out. I’ve always known that. Yeah, I didn’t want to be here, but I didn’t want to kill myself. I just wanted to push a button and disappear,” Mickey added.
Mickey revealed that while he was on the verge of becoming suicidal, he realized that he had to live for his loving dogs, the only ones, who stood by him.
“I think I hadn’t left the house for four or five months, and I was sitting in the closet, sleeping in the closet for some reason, and I was in a bad place, and I just remember I was thinking, ‘Oh, man, if I do this, And then I looked at my dog, Lowjack, and he made a sound, like a little almost human sound. I don’t have kids, the dogs became everything to me. The dog was looking at me going, ‘Who’s going to take care of me?’” Mickey said. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 18 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet credits her toned physique to “a wing and a prayer”, insisting she’s “too busy” to even think about exercising.
The Oscar nominee, who has struggled with weight since she was a teenager, insists she hasn’t been slimming down for the big ceremony.
When asked if she was dieting, Winslet said, “N.O. (I) absolutely do not. I’m very sort of relaxed and vocal about these things. I have not done a stitch of exercise since October. I literally have not had the time.”
“I’m just going to eat normally, I’m not going to make cuts.
“If I’m keeping it together it’s by a wing and a prayer. I just want to enjoy this,” she added.
The 33-year-old actress is winning accolades for her role in The Reader, and is tipped to win the Best actress at the Oscars.
She has already scooped two awards in Golden Globes and walked away with Best actress gong at the Baftas. (ANI)
