Sixth century stone sculpture of Hindu goddess discovered in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 4 (ANI): An ancient sculpture of Hindu Goddess of wealth Gajalakshmi has recently been discovered at Nagbal Lesser village in Jammu and Kashmir.

The sculpture, carved out of brownish limestone, is now kept for further examination at the office of Archives Archaeology and Museum in Srinagar. It will be shifted to Sri Pratap Singh Museum for public display later.

“As far as the object (sculpture) is concerned it is very important. According to our earlier examination, the statue dates back to the 6th or 7th century. It’s of brownish colour and from the perspective of craftsmanship, it is finely chiselled out,” said Khurshid Ahmad Qadri, Director, Archives Archaeology and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir.

The statue, measuring nine inches in height and five inches in width, is seated on the lotus throne placed between two lions. The main sculpture is enclosed in a stone frame, the top of which projects the shape of elephant motifs towards the head of the deity.

The idol holds a lotus in her right hand and cornucopia in her left hand. The other end of the drapery covering the lower body of the sculpture does not go behind its shoulder but is wrapped around in pleats beneath the chest of the deity.

The carving and costumes of the sculpture speak volumes about skilled craftsmanship of the ancient Kashmiri art.

“As far as its art is concerned, this art form connects it to the Gandhara School of Art. The Gandhara School of Art was founded in the first century BC. The theme cultivated by Gandhara artists later reached Kashmir. The costume we get to see in this sculpture shows a confluence of Greek and Indian art forms,” said Iqbal Ahmad, a historian.

This is the only sculpture found from the Lesser Kokernag area of Kashmir so far. However, the presence of pottery in an around the Lesser village reveals presence of some ancient settlements. By Afzal Bhat (ANI)

With ‘future’ films failing, will KAL KISSNE DEKHA do the trick??

Sampurn, Bollywood Trade News Network
KAL KISSNE DEKHA is a common adage heard whenever a conversation veers towards future. Time and again one wonders about what future has in hold for us but the end result is always a casual shrug of shoulders.

Well, that’s not something that Bollywood is content with though. The film industry, which is forever looking for newer and creative ideas, has quite happily grabbed the idea of looking into the future. Result is that there have been three such releases in recent times that had a common theme of venturing into a territory that has been hitherto unexplored while a fourth is already on its way.

These films are TASVEER 8X10, AA DEKHEN ZARA, 13B and KAL KISSNE DEKHA. While future gazing is of course a favorite topic [AA DEKHEN ZARA, KAL KISSNE DEKHA], even supernatural element around a non-living subject defining our tomorrow (or yesterday) held prominence in at least a couple of films [TASVEER 8X10, 13B].

In AA DEKHEN ZARA, director Jehangir Surti focused on a camera which had the ability to look into the future and warn in advance about what’s going to happen next. Well, seems audiences were truly warned about what was really in store as they chose to stay away from the film which has failed at the box office in two weeks flat.

With a camera gadget doing the trick, one wonders where does the place remain for a conventional lead hero in Bollywood?

“Exactly the point”, says R. Madhavan, “My 13B didn’t have any conventional male lead in fact. Instead, it was the TV which played the main lead.”

In such poor times at the box office when films are failing left, right and center, Madhavan’s 13B has still managed to hold fort to an extent by accumulating 8 crores at the box office during its four week run so far.

The biggest of them was touted to be Akshay Kumar starrer TASVEER 8X10 though where a photo frame held prominence in the film’s narrative. This time around it was a journey into the past through this frame. However, present audience was hardly interested in the past and caused a dent to Akshay’s future by giving it thumbs down. Result is that the film has turned out to be one of the biggest trade disasters of Akshay’s near two decade career.

One looks forward to the fourth movie with a ‘future’ subject being explored – KAL KISSNE DEKHA. The film talks about the power of seeing the future though this time around it’s the lead protagonist himself and not a gadget or a picture that does the trick.

“Nihal Singh is a gifted boy. He realizes only after a point in time that he gets some true premonitions. He isn’t sure about it to begin with but later settles down to this gift”, says Jackky Bhagnani, the debutant lead of the film in a guarded tone. Of course there is a lot more to the storyline but with the film still being a few more weeks away from release, he is rightly holding on to the information.

Well, with quite a few innovative story ideas failing when it came to execution, all eyes are now set on KAL KISSNE DEKHA to ’see’ (pun intended) if the ‘future’ actually holds good for Bollywood. With debutant Vaishali Desai in the lead and director Vivek BHOOTHNATH Sharma at the helm of direction, this Vashu Bhangani production which has music by Sajid-Wajid could arrive on 1st May if the stand off between producers and multiplexes gets cleared by that time!

Sufi singers enchant with language mix

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) Sufi music is generally associated with north India, but three Dargah singers from the south have brought with them a different brand of Sufi singing, not commonly heard – a mix of Tamil, Urdu and Arabic.

Abdul Ghani, 57, Ajah Maideen, 42, and Saburmaideen Babha Sabeer, 65, are all sufi singers who mesmerise music lovers with their chants at the shrine of Meeran Sahib Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid Badshah in Nagor in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district.

The trio have lent their voice to an album ‘Nagore Sessions’ produced by the label EarthSync and bring alive Sufi music in Tamil and Arabic.

‘Sufi saints travelled worldwide. In India, their presence was predominant in the northern region. But the Sufi movement also spread to south India and one of the most important Sufi shrines in India after Ajmer Sharif is the one at Nagore. The singers there have their own brand of Sufi singing. They have a completely different style of putting it across,’ Sonya Mazumdar, CEO of EarthSync, told IANS.

‘When we first came across these singers, they were singing in the dargah and our project is about giving such artistes platforms, taking them and exposing the world to their kind of music.’

The three singers have fused their earthy chants with Middle Eastern percussion, contemporary western and Indian instruments.

‘We are really excited and happy that we got to travel to various places and perform songs that are a mixture of Tamil, Urdu and Arabic,’ said Ajah Maideen, who was in the capital to participate in the Bhakti Utsav, a festival of religious hymns.

‘Our compositions and our brand of Sufi is different from other Sufi singers. The feeling is the same, but the style is very different,’ he added.

Apart from India, the three singers have performed in different cities in Israel and Australia and say that ‘language can’t be a barrier when it comes to music’.

All three are well versed in Tamil, Urdu and Arabic.

‘Wherever we have travelled and performed, people have loved our music and enjoyed it to the hilt. I feel language doesn’t pose a hindrance when it comes to music,’ said Abdul Ghani.

‘Sufi music is something that is sung from the core of the heart. We are not trained in this form. But this is what comes naturally to us and I think that’s what clicks with listeners,’ he added.

Asked about Sufi music in Hindi films, Ghani said: ‘We don’t feel that the Sufi music used in films is the real form of the genre. They don’t use frame drum along with the vocals which is an essential instrument to create Sufi music.’

The three are married and have a family to support and they used to perform at marriages and other festive occasions to make ends meet apart from singing at the dargah.

But they say the situation has improved after the album.

‘After the album, I won’t say there is a drastic change in our earnings, but yes there has been a difference and we are happy. The situation is better,’ said Ghani.

‘Earlier people in our state did not know about us, but with this album and these shows people have started recognising us. We are famous now.’

Obama gifts daughters new playground in White House gardens

London, March 6 (ANI): U.S. President Barack Obama has got a new playground made in the gardens of the White House for his two daughters.

The playground, made from 100 per cent cedar and North American Redwood, boasts a swing set, climbing frame and slide.

These arrangements have been made just outside the Oval office so that the President may watch his kids playing while he works.

This is said to be the first playground at the White House, which has been built in accordance with Obama’s pledge to create a greener environment.

Sasha, 7, and her elder sister Malia, 10, are said to be very happy with their father’s latest present.

Presidential staff have revealed that the little girls, who are still waiting for the puppy their father promised them, squealed with delight when they saw it.

“Many first families have made these sorts of changes to make the White House feel like home,” Sky News quoted a spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama as saying.

Katie McCormick Lelyveld added: “This one is like their little mark.”

‘Virtual calendar’ to make families more organised developed

London, Mar 5 (ANI): The days of sticking reminder notes to the fridge door would soon be passi, courtesy a new high-tech calendar that sends text messages to family members.

Mobile phone company O2 has launched a multimedia device called Joggler along with messaging service designed to help families get more organised.

The Joggler, which goes on sale next month, is a touch screen device designed to be placed in the kitchen or living room, and connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.

It is also capable of playing up to 100 videos or songs stored with its 1GB internal memory.

It works as a digital photo frame, enabling users to display up to 200 pictures on the Joggler, as well as play games, such as Sudoku.

The O2 Joggler will send text message reminders of events or appointments to family members.

Currently it will only send reminder texts to O2 handsets.

“We’ve developed the O2 Joggler with today’s busy families in mind,” the Telegraph quoted Alistair Johnson, marketing director of O2 as saying.

“It has been purpose built to help families better organise their lives,” Johnson added.

O2 has also inked a deal with satellite broadcaster Sky to provide the latest news and sport headlines, along with weather forecasts and traffic reports.

The ability to listen to Internet radio through the device will be added in the coming months. (ANI)

New approach to treat lung cancer offers high cure rates

Washington, Mar 5 (ANI): A new technique to treat lung cancer at Temple University might double a person’s chances of surviving the deadly disease, and that too without the need of conventional radiation regimen or surgery.

Called stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), the technique not only improves a person’s odds of surviving early stage lung cancer, but may also reduce the need for future surgeries, according to doctors in the Radiation Oncology Department.

“This is a big trend in radiation oncology for early stage lung cancer patients who either can’t undergo surgery or refuse it. With the success of this technique, we’re now questioning whether we’ll even be doing surgeries on these patients in the future,” said Curtis Miyamoto, chair and professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the School of Medicine.

The treatment of lung cancer with conventional radiation is quite burdensome because patients have to receive radiation therapy five days a week for six to seven weeks, making it difficult for people not living in the city.

Comparatively, SBRT requires only three to eight treatments, not 35. Once malignancy is confirmed through a PET CT scan or biopsy, treatments can begin.

Patients are placed in an immobilizing body frame to reduce movement so that doctors can focus radiation on the tumour while reducing exposure of healthy tissue.

Although both traditional treatments and SBRT methods involve radiation, SBRT administers large, highly precise doses instead of multiple smaller doses.

For those who undergo SBRT, the median survival range is more than 32 months.

And depending on the size and seriousness of the tumour, the two-year disease free survival, or cure rate through SBRT increases to approximately 81 percent and can reach up to 98 percent.

SBRT doubles the odds of surviving early stage lung cancer and can actually cure at least half of the patients.

“Such high survival rates are equivalent to other techniques, like invasive surgery, but you don’t have to go under the knife. I think the big thing the patient notices is it’s all done very quickly and the results are impressive,” said Miyamoto.

The study has been published in the International Journal of Radiation OncologyBiologyPhysics. (ANI)

How quotes get misquoted with time

London, Feb 26 (ANI): One’s not ‘on tender hooks’ when he or she is anxious, because the correct phrase for this condition is ‘on tenterhooks’- this and other similar sentences have been misquoted for long because people misheard them in the beginning itself.

And now, a poll of 1, 000 people by hearing aid retailer Amplifon has come up with the top misquotes in Britain.

“Technically these are called malapropisms. But we think most people simply mishear them and repeat their mistake over and over again,” The Sun quoted Mark Holmes, from Amplifon as saying.

Some of the common mistakes Britons do while using popular phrases are:

What they say: Damp squid

What they mean: Damp squib

A squib is an explosive device once used to ignite gunpowder in cannons. Squibs were originally made from parchment and sealed with wax. If they got damp, they would fizzle out or not light at all, hence meaning a disappointing performance.

What they say: On tender hooks

What they mean: On tenterhooks

Tenters were wooden frames used in the medieval times to make cloth. In order to stop the washed weave from shrinking during drying, it would be stretched on the frame and secured in place by hooks nailed into the wood. By the 18th century the term “on tenterhooks” described being in a state of suspense or anxiety.

What they say: Nip it in the butt

What they mean: Nip it in the bud

Put a stop to something while it is still in its early development is what refers to nip it in the bud, like a young rose.

What they say: Mute point

What they mean: Moot point

A “moot” point, is something open for debate. It links back to medieval England when judicial assemblies were called mots or motes.

What they say: One foul swoop

What they mean: One fell swoop

“One fell swoop” comes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth and means all at once. It is one of many phrases from the Bard that is misquoted.

What they say: All that glitters is not gold

What they mean: All that glisters is not gold

In Shakespeare’s The Merchant Of Venice the phrase is uttered by the Prince of Morocco. It means a showy article may not necessarily be valuable.

What they say: Batting down the hatches

What they mean: Batten down the hatches

The phrase was originally a nautical one. A batten is a strip of wood nailed across the hatch to keep it watertight in stormy weather.

What they say: Find a penny, pick it up

What they mean: See a pin, pick it up

Pins were expensive in the Middle Ages when the expression came into use. It appears in early nursery rhymes. (ANI)

Mayer was “very, very nervous” to attend Oscars with Aniston

Washington, Feb 26 (ANI): John Mayer has confessed that he was “very, very nervous” to attend the Oscars with lover Jennifer Aniston.

“It’s not my world, the Oscar thing,” Us magazine quoted him, as saying on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show.

“You can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk in the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night,” he said.

“That’s just like a whole different level,” he added.

As for the reason why he went to the ceremony, he said he went as “moral support” for Aniston.

Although he went there to support Aniston, Mayer said his role soon turned into: “‘Will you please introduce me to so-and-so?’”

Added the singer, “It was really, really fun.”

“As men, we’re incredibly sensitive about the decisions that we make with the women that we’re with,” he went on.

“I’m the kind of person who’s like: If I’m going out with a friend who’s bringing a woman and that friend brings another friend and I have to sit on one side of the table with that other person I don’t know, I have a terrible time because I always feel like people look by and go, ‘Oh, look who he’s with!’

“The whole thing is very odd to me. I maybe need to grow up or something.

“So the idea of walking down a red carpet is such … you know that forever, I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood,” Mayer continued.

“For one night, I put on the most amazing suit and entered into the picture frame,” he added.

“You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation, and she did, and it was really great,” said Mayer.

Asked why he and Aniston decided to make the Oscars their first major public event together, he said, “At some point, you feel comfortable and say this is the choice I want to make.” (ANI)

Oz fitness trainer piles on the pounds to understand his fat clients

London, February 25 (ANI): A former model and fitness trainer in Australia is doing all that he can to stick to his New Year’s resolution – to pile on more than seven stone.

Melbourne-based Paul James, 32, decided to gain more weight because he wanted to understand his fat gym clients.

The former model, who has strutted his stuff on catwalks in Tokyo and Milan, has had his Adonis-like 121/2st frame ballooned to 151/2st, and is on the way to his target of 20st.

Paul is relying upon kebabs, pasta, cream sauces, chocolate and other calorific carbohydrate diets to gain weight.

The former teetotaller even drinks beers every night.

“It was difficult to relate to overweight gym members so I’m experiencing life as an overweight person,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

Paul says that once he hits 20st, he would hold his weight until June, and then try to lost the pounds by early October.

He even sees a doctor for check-ups every week.

Dr. Matt Capehorn, of the UK’s National Obesity Forum, warns: “Weight gain of this kind could increase the dangers of diabetes and high blood pressure.” (ANI)

GJM repeats salvo, will collect taxes from people in Hills

GJM repeats salvo, will collect taxes from people in Hills

Govt says without revenue it will be forced to withdraw basic services from the area

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has reiterated its stand that it will begin collecting all taxes from the residents of the Hills from March 7 onwards as part of its non-cooperation movement.

Considering the elections, however, citizens will be allowed to pay their vehicle tax to the district administration, senior GJM leaders said on Friday.

“Till now, people were not paying any taxes to the government following our call. But March 7 onwards, they will pay the taxes to us,” Morcha general secretary Roshan Giri said.

“We are working out the modalities and will announce these in a few days,” he added.

It is also reported that the state government is considering withdrawal of government services in Darjeeling from March 7.

Commenting on the issue, State Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti told The Indian Express that no time frame has been fixed for the move, but lack of revenue may eventually force the administration to withdraw government services from the Hills.

“How can the government function without revenue? If people don’t pay taxes, electricity and telephone bills, how can the services be sustained? Ultimately, they will have to be discontinued,” Chakrabarti said.

A group of high-level GJM leaders, meanwhile, are back after a trip to Lalgarh, where tribals have been up in arms against alleged excesses by the state police following the attack on the chief minister’s convoy by suspected Maoists in November last year.

Since mid-January, the Morcha has been trying hard to get approval of tribal leaders for the inclusion of Dooars and Terai region of Jalpaiguri district in the proposed Gorkhaland state.

“We had a successful meeting with tribals in Lalgarh. In fact, tribal leader Chattradhar Mahato has declared full support for Gorkhaland, which includes the Dooars,” Giri said.

Chakrabarti, however, seemed unperturbed by the development. He claimed that the state government is not concerned about the Morcha’s meeting with Lalgarh leaders. “This is a free country. Anyone can meet anyone they want,” Chakrabarti said.

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): ‘The O.C.’ star Mischa Barton has revealed that Pilates is the secret behind her slim frame.

She said: “For me, it’s all about Pilates recently. I’m obsessed with Pilates. I think it’s so fun.”

The 23-year-old actress had recently sparked concerns for her health after displaying an increasingly thin physique, reports the China Daily.

She added to America’s OK! magazine: “I don’t do any crash diets. There’s nothing that I really do like that, because I’m always working. I mean, before I go do a film, I do workout more. I do get ready for a film and try to be healthy and in shape. And when I’m not working, I do less of it.

“I do more cardio because I work long hours. Jogging, running – tuff like that’s really good before you do a film so you have more energy.” (ANI)

Mum tells ’skinny’ Lindsay to gorge on McDonald’s

London, Feb 19 (ANI): Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan’s mother Dina has asked her to scoff a hamburger or two in a bid to get rid of her newly acquired thin frame.

Dina is reportedly worried about Lindsay after she shed her attractive curves, and has asked her to go the fast food way to pile on pounds.

“I’m a mom. If I see my daughter a little thin, I say, ‘Eat more McDonald’s.’ I told Lindsay I think she’s a little thin,” The Daily Express quoted Dina, as telling Access Hollywood.

However, Dina insists the gossip columns and blogs shouldn’t be concerned with her daughter’s health issues.

“We go through this every couple of months. My daughter is happy and healthy and that’s all that really matters,” Dina said.

“We try to keep it at bay and not really read it or engage in it because it’s just other people’s opinions. We’ve got hit pretty hard in the past, so we don’t really go there,” she added. (ANI)

Chandigarh’s professional acting schools open a new career option for youth

Chandigarh, Jan.16 (ANI): The opening up of professional acting schools in Chandigarh has helped many young wannabe actors to take up acting as a career.

One of such training institutes is ‘Actor Prepares’ being jointly run by the Society for Tourism and Entertainment Promotions (STEPS) and noted actor Anupam Kher.

It is one of India’s finest acting schools and the students here are honing their skills to fulfill their dreams of stardom. A graduating batch at this acting school is presently producing a short film ‘Jassa’

“This movie helped us so much, because by the end of the three months we also wanted to know how much we have gained, things, like how to stand while recording, and what is a frame. You learn here about ‘over the shoulder shots’ your expression and your body language. So this movie is all about what we have learnt,” said Pooja, a student at the Institute.
“It’s a career in which you get name, fame and money. In other careers you may get money or just name but in this you get everything and I think that’s what everyone wants here,” said Anmol, another student.

“These days we are working on ‘method acting’. Method acting teaches you to mold yourself into the character you are portraying. Your personal character shouldn’t be seen. We have been taught this extensively. We are given proper training and exercises to improve our imagination, and put across our best,” said Rahul, another student.

Youth from Punjab, who did not have such opportunities earlier, now have a platform to nurture their talent.

Besides, competent in-house faculty members at ‘Actor Prepares’ is a roster of Bollywood celebrities who are a part of the school’s visiting faculty.

Above all, each student receives individual guidance from actor Anupam Kher.

“I think the only industry, which has not been hit by recession, is the entertainment industry because the hunger for entertainment will always be there. The need for professional people-actors, technicians, and directors help us in producing more professionals. We have a well known people in our faculty, and I can very proudly say that in the next five to seven years we will be able to prepare students from all over the world, who would be mainstream actors in the coming films,” said Anupam Kher.

There will be “breaks” for the talented young actors, as the Punjabi film industry is on the path of revival.

In addition, Chandigarh and its surrounding areas have become favorite locales for shooting and this would mean more opportunities for the budding actors.

Bollywood has many actors from Punjab – Kapoors , Khannas, and more recently the Deols. And now a pool of young talent from Punjab is looking forward to making its mark in the Indian film industry. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Mujib assassination: Bangladesh envoy to Malaysia says he was in India at that time

Kuala Lumpur, Jan.16 (ANI): Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Malaysia M. Khairuzzaman is following orders from Dhaka to return to headquarters, but is not certain whether he will be returning home soon in the wake of reports that he may be prosecuted for the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“I’m definitely winding up here, but I don’t know what I’m going to do. The last time I was recalled in 1996 and went back, I was arrested,” he said, adding that he was innocent as he was in India at the time of the incident, undergoing training on Mujib’s written orders.

Khairuzzaman claimed the new regime was doing this for political mileage, adding that he was innocent.

“I was not even in the country when Mujib (Sheikh Mujibur) was assassinated. I was in India undergoing training, by an order signed by Mujib himself,” the New Strait Times quoted him, as saying.

Sheikh Mujibur’s daughter, Sheikh Hasina, who was sworn in as prime minister for the second time on January 6, is said to be demanding the prosecution of all those people who played a role in her father’s assassination.

Her first term was between 1996 and 2001.

Khairuzzaman said when Sheikh Hasina was prime minister in 1996; he and other heads of Bangladeshi missions serving abroad were recalled as well.

“No one turned up… they all absconded except for me. I reported for duty in the headquarters within the six-day time frame given. A month later, I was arrested.”

Khairuzzaman spent five-and-a-half years in jail, although for the first three-and-a-half years there was no charge against him.

Subsequently, he was issued a charge sheet for a jail killing case, involving the murder of four of Sheikh Mujibur’s aides in November 1975. He was later granted bail while the jail-killing case was ongoing.

In October 2004, he was acquitted of the charge. The case was appealed, and six months ago, the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal.

But two days ago, he received a recall order signed by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni asking him to return with immediate effect.

Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government Hasan Mahmud had told the New Straits Times on Wednesday that Khairuzzaman was being recalled to face trial in connection with Sheikh Mujibur’s assassination. (ANI)
