Los Angeles (US), Aug.22 (ANI): Racist slurs against Asians in Hollywood’s latest movie “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard” has angered Asian Americans, who came out to protest against the film’s maker on Friday.
Karen Narasaki, President and Executive Director of the Asian American Justice Center, said in a statement that the use of harmful, racist slurs and treatment of hate crimes in the film are “unacceptable and should not be tolerated.”
Although billed as a satirical comedy, there is nothing funny about using slurs that simply reinforce negative stereotypes, nor in making light of violent hate crimes, Narasaki stressed.
“Hate crimes are very real and have a devastating effect on our communities. Employing the use of racial slurs and hate-based violence for comic relief is unacceptable,” Xinhua quoted Narasaki, as saying.
Meanwhile, Stewart Kwoh, President and Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, said: “We condemn any portrayals of a hate crime as ‘comedy’-as advocates who have worked closely with the families of hate crimes victims over the years, including those who have lost loved ones to hate violence, we are appalled at the film’s flippant disregard of the human cost of hate violence.” (ANI)

Mumbai, Aug 17(ANI): In an innovative method of film promotion star cast of ‘Life Partner’ on Monday opted to sell tickets of the film at the ticket counter of a theatre in Mumbai.
It was an unusual sight for the movie buffs, who noticed Fardeen Khan, Tushhar kapoor, Prachi Desai and Genelia D’souza selling tickets at the ticket counter for their movie at the Gaiety theatre.
Due to swine flu scare, the Maharashtra Government had declared closure of all the theatres and multiplexes for three days and the release of movies like ‘Life Partner’ and ‘Kaminey’ was postponed from the scheduled Friday to Monday.
‘Life Partner’ producer Abbas of the Abbas-Mastan duo said that although they would have incurred loses due to the deferred release, they were still hopeful of making profit.
“Whatever response we received today from the public, it seems although we cannot incur the losses we had in these three crucial days, but I am sure we will manage to recover slowly,” said Abbas.
As soon as the news spread, chaos prevailed at the ticket counters with the fans trying to catch a glimpse of these and buy tickets from them.
Tusshar Kapoor said that as their film received good collections in other cities, they wanted the same from Mumbai.
“It has been written in the history of Bollywood that if the film is reported as flop, then even if Saturday is a major holiday, people will never go to watch it. The collections of our film almost tripled in few cities after it released. That is why we are here so that people of Mumbai can make our film equally successful like other cities,” said Tusshar Kapoor.
Scripted and Directed by Rumy Jaffery it is a romantic comedy and has Govinda in the lead. It is the story of two couples struggling with their life partners and lovers. (ANI)

Matters are at an all time low with no new releases coming up and the tussle between profit sharing continuing. There has still not been any breakthrough between the two warring parties of producers and multiplex owners. The last film that released was Nagesh Kuknoor’s 8×10 Tasveer.
This is the fourth week and matters have not progressed at all. With no breakthrough in sight, the scenario is likely to continue for some more time. Multiplex owners are resorting to screening regional fare and some have even shut down some of their screens. Some producers are also trying to beat the situation by re releasing their earlier hits at single screen theatres. The latest is that Hollywood film distributors in India have also joined hands with the Hindi film producers and there is not likely to be any more Hollywood releases over the next few weeks. Both the films that released last Friday, Dashavatar and Meri Padonsan, had a dismal opening and the state of affairs is not likely to improve. Reports suggest that there may be breakthrough by the end of this week. It will definitely be long overdue.

After the news that Yash Raj Films has signed actor Parmeet Sethi to direct their next venture, there is growing cynicism in the industry about the decision. Going by the track record of YRF for the past few years, many feel that the decision could not make a big difference to YRF’s plan to churn out big hits.
Now, that Aditya Chopra has made his decision clear, what remains to be seen is how this impacts the fortunes of one of the country’s biggest film production houses which desperately is looking for a magical formula to stay relevant.

It indeed is ironic that Akshay Kumar who is one of the stars who has popularized Jeans as an attire and symbolizing youth is being tormented reportedly for an obscene gesture while promoting a new brand of Jeans. In fact Jeans as attire had a late debut in the Hindi films but after it got an endorsement from our film stars it became the attire symbolic of youth and energy.
It was the advent of Jeans that led to development of notion of health conscious and to have a toned body. It also had its rub-off effect on the female actors as well, and if a fault line were to be discerned that really swayed a nation in a big way and pushed it on to a journey of Jeans discovery, the campaign of Coke involving Aishwarya Rai could be one such fault line. Dressed simply in a white shirt and Jeans she apart from swaying Aamir Khan off his feet was able to literally swoon the whole country as well.
From the previous generation it was in SHOLAY that Jeans made its debut in a big way as attire that had element of rebel and exuberance of youth written on it, and it got manifest in the characters portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. As a matter of fact in SHOLAY for the first time probably in Hindi cinema, Big B had packaged a pair of Jeans with a Black shirt and it became a fashion statement.
As the generational shift acquired its mooring, Jeans slowly weeded out hose pipe pants and flaring bell bottoms, and it became the fabric which defined the chutzpah of the character. In ANDHA KANNON after a long time Amitabh Bachchan had returned to Jeans in a big way, and again the element of casual that he had brought to his character of Jaanisaar Khan got manifested in a big way through Jeans as well.
The generation of Big B probably did not patronize Jeans in a big way owing probably to the fact that this generation was at the cusp of nationalism, where Jeans still was considered as western attire.
But as the new generation made its debut in Hindi cinema, brought on the profuse dozes of Abba, BoneyM, Pink Floyd and Woodstock, Jeans came to make their presence felt in a big way in the world of Hindi cinema. The same kind of paradigm shift was noticed in case of the female actors as well, and experimentation with Jeans as an attire by the female actors also allowed them to experiment with their looks as well. If there was one film that can be considered as a film that promoted Jeans in a big way it was JAANBAAZ and it can always be a matter of debate whether Dimple Kapadia looked more beautiful in a Jeans in JAANBAAZ or in SAAGAR. Jury would go in favor of JAANBAAZ. Incidentally, Feroze Khan can be considered as the father figure of Jeans in Indian films, as right from the time when he made DHARMATAMA, followed by QUARBANI and YALGAAR, to JANBAAZ, his films are a living tribute to the humble Jeans in its most alluring manifestations.
It is a tribute to the fascination of Jeans that a film by name of JEANS was made in Hindi and the female character in this film was enacted by Aishwarya Rai sheer coincidence or fortuitousness, decision is left to sail in the wind. Even a song was written on Jeans epitomizing its association with youth, “Purani Jeans Aur Guitar”…
Jeans as it represents youth, the sense of aghast that is being experienced by the purists, may be condoned as an indulgence and exuberance of youth and nothing else.
Jeans represents youth and youth is allowed to err sometimes, but the magnanimity of the elders is to condone it and allow moving on.

Bollywood Trade News Network
Amitabh Bachchan has always been a trend-setter, but this time he goes a step further by adding a personal touch to his character.
While planning a shoot for a special number for his forthcoming film ALADIN, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Mr. Bachchan suggested doing his own styling for the song’s picturisation.
Apparently Mr. Bachchan was extremely excited about the groovy track picturised on himself and Riteish Deshmukh and while planning the shoot for the peppy number, expressed his desire to contribute to the song in his very own way: by choosing his own outfit for it!
Of course, the director willingly agreed and Mr. Bachchan went on to chose a deep red velvet jacket which added that extra touch of grandeur to his already larger-than-life persona in the film.
Now that’s what we call flaunting your style with panache!

If the hottest Bong of Bollywood, Bipasha Basu is learning to swim and belly dance, her fellow bong, Koena Mitra isn’t far behind. Koena is a fitness freak and is said to have the ‘Hot and Sexy’ body by her friends. She feels strongly that heroines get to do just a little bit of action and that to during climax (emphasizes). She wants to stand apart by being a part of an action packed movie where woman power of being physically strong dazzles. She is also preparing for the same by learning underwater swimming under the guidance of her instructor Chung and feels “I can swim but couldn’t venture into deep waters because I couldn’t look down in the depths. I started learning underwater action sequences and wirework with harness from a distance.”
According to Koena all this might help her do underwater sequences in some film. Girls can do action oriented roles, if they are fit. Initially Koena was terrified as two trainers would take her from the shallow end of the pool by handcuffing her to them but her hard work has got her to being comfortable with under water and extremely confident to do some action packed under water sequences.
Hoping that the Fit Bong girl, Koena makes a bigger mark for herself in the Indian Film Industry and achieves her wish to do some power packed action roles in the future.

It had to happen, and it has happened. When there are three famous Bollywood stars that are franchisee owners of three of the main teams in the IPL, i.e. Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta, a convergence between the films and cricket had to be arrived. And it has arrived. These three super stars have decided that they would be on the hunt for a new Bollywood starlet from amongst the spectators who come to watch the matches of the IPL.
This decision would really send the camerapersons covering the IPL matches in South Africa into a tizzy, as there would be a load of glamour and oomph on display with loads of attitude and array of designer ware. After all, when would the pretty girls from South Africa be they of the Indian origin or the South African origin get a chance to act in a film in Bollywood. As it is South Africa is a venue, which has been quite popular with our Hindi film industry as a preferred locale, and Sanjay Dutt is a star that is the most popular of the Indian film stars in South Africa.
These three stars would have a lot of watching to do, and they have not retracted, but have decided to watch all the matches to find out that elusive face. After all, who does not want to unleash one’s own discovery into the world of Hindi cinema, a protege always warms the cockles of the heart. The person who would be finally selected would be entitled to a role in a Hindi film, 50000 Rands in cash, a business class trip to India and a whole truckload of other prizes. The whole idea behind going in for searches of these kinds is to get a fresh face without the trappings of grooming for a space in Bollywood.
The focus of the search of the face would be to find out if it has an attitude and appearance and the arena of the cricket ground has been chosen as it would indeed be difficult to maintain a demeanor through out a match and natural expression would come into play, and it is this natural expression that would even mesmerize a stranger is being aspired for, through this quest. The trio would select 50 winners from each one of the eight venues hosting IPL matches in South Africa. Those who emerge winner would be shown on the big screen during the second five-minute break.
Each venue would have one finalist, so in all there would be eight finalists from whom one lucky person would be selected and honored at the final match in the Wanderers in Johannesburg on 24 May 2009.
Wonder why services of Mandira Bedi are not being requisitioned for this endeavor, as she literally hangs out amongst the crowd with her mike in hand?

No one could have imagined that after a no-show in NO SMOKING, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and John Abraham would come together ever again, but they are and that too for a big budgeted, multi-starrer titled BOMBAY VELVET.
There are many theories doing the rounds as far as the story of the film is concerned. However what is clear is that the film is a thriller and is set in the early 60’s Bombay. It is based on true stories, taken from real life incidents and shows how Bombay changed from a city to a metropolis.
The iconoclastic director (in his columns) reveals that the film is based loosely on the life of the legendary filmmaker and actor, Guru Dutt, who Anurag holds in great esteem. Another story doing the rounds is that the film is about a real life hero of the masses from the 60’s. But amidst all that one factor that is common is that the film is set in Bombay of the 60’s.
So, the audience should be prepared for a period film from the filmmaker who has always dared to be different. Period films have always been exciting and to see one from Anurag Kashyap’s point of view would definitely be an intellectually satisfying experience for those who demand more than just time pass entertainment.

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Sonu Sood has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ made by UAE filmmaker Ali Mostafa. A major part of the film requires the Bollywood actor to be badly disfigured and the makeup artist chosen to bring about half-mutilated face was none other than Jean Ann Black, who worked on Brad Pitt’s face in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.
The actor is all praise for Ann Black.
‘Actually half the face of my character gets mutilated. I couldn’t believe it when I saw what miracle had been worked by the makeup artist. I was horrified to see my own face in the mirror,’ Sonu told IANS.
Sonu, who was recently seen in films like ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ and ‘Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi’, has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ in Dubai with Alexandra Maria Lara.
‘What she did to my face was stunning and shocking. My makeup used to take three-four hours every morning. I had to sit patiently as 50 percent of my face disappeared under makeup – literally. And then there were these special lenses not just for the cornea but the entire eye which gave it a scary clotted eye.’
Sonu is glad his little son wasn’t with him.
‘He’d have got really frightened. I did when I saw myself. People who’ve seen what she has done can’t believe the transformation. They say the makeup artist has done as good a job on my face as she did with Brad Pitt,’ said Sonu.
And to further complete the Brad-Benjamin Button picture Sonu even has the actor who played Brad’s father in the film as his co-star.
‘Jason Fleming who played Brad Pitt’s father in ‘Benjamin Button’ plays the villain in ‘City Of Life’,’ he said.

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Anjana Sukhani says she is game for bikinis if her role really demands it. Though she has adopted a glamorous persona in films like ‘Golmaal Returns’ and ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, the actress is yet to join the bikini brigade.
‘It’s not in my wish list either. However, there comes a point in your career where you get a film that requires you to shed your inhibitions. Of course, the role that I play has to be of utmost importance – if it is justified for the character to wear a bikini, then I won’t fret about it,’ Anjana told IANS.
Skin show has taken a different dimension in the last few months with actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Minissha Lamba and Amisha Patel getting into the swim wear for their roles. Also with dozens of film and fashion magazines hitting the stands, actresses are making a bee line to be seen on the cover.
‘I’m very sure about the fact that posing seductively for the camera doesn’t really pay. It can’t help you grab work. What eventually matters is how talented you are and whether you can deliver goods on the screen,’ said the actress who had grabbed attention in the Cadbury ad with superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
But being in the glamour world where beauty sells, isn’t that a dicey statement to make?
‘Of course, looking pretty is a valuable thing, but then talent matters as well’, said Anjana. ‘At the end of the day, it is about coming up with a balancing act. Being ‘just pretty’ or ‘just talented’ doesn’t help because one of them working just in isolation can’t take you anywhere. You have to have a good mix of both.’
‘My dad has always said that you should do things that reflect the goal that you want to ultimately meet. If a small step taken by me helps me get closer to that goal, I won’t mind doing that as long as I don’t cross any limits,’ she added.
In that case, how does she look back at her first few steps when she had just started her career with films like ‘Humdum’ (2005) and ‘Sun Zarra’ (2006)?
‘I continue to be emotionally attached to these films because those earlier steps reaffirmed that I existed and paved the way for me to appear in bigger and better films. I didn’t come from a filmy family; nor did I have any supermodel experience that could help me get work. Those were testing times and everything that I decided to do, I had to do it on my own without any godfather supporting me.’
With ‘Jashn’, ‘Tum Milo toh Sahi’ and ‘Allah Ke Banday’ in the pipeline, life is certainly looking up for Anjana.
‘Certainly. I am glad that these are turning out to be good times. I stand by all my decisions in the past and, regardless of whether they have succeeded or failed, I have no regrets,’ she said.

Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar who turned 81, last September will return to the recording studios after a long gap of five years. She was supposed to start with the recording of a solo number for Om Shri Arihant’s ‘Lifestyle In Generation Next’ two months ago but had to postpone the recording because of a series operation to replace both her knees. She has now completely recovered and will report for the recording for the same film at Swarlata Recording Studio on April 27. The song will be recorded by one of her favorite music director Raam Laxman.
‘I feel like a new singer facing for first test. It is a great feeling to sing for a film again but I am also a little nervous before the recording of any song and this time I am a little more nervous because of being out of touch. I have worked very hard on the song. And I hope I do justice to it,’ the always very humble Lataji says.
The film written, produced and directed by Santosh Kumar Jain who makes his debut after years of financing big filmmakers like Manmohan Desai, Dada Kondke and S. Raamnathan is planned to be made on an ambitious scale and talks are going on with a few leading stars both from India and Hollywood.

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
Onlookers in the crowded Lajpat Nagar market in New Delhi was amazed when they realized that none other than Rishi Kapoor was shopping amidst them. To their amusement, the veteran actor wasn’t visiting premium shops and was instead hunting for clothes that carried a dirt cheap price tag on them. Though Delhites were left clueless about the reason behind Rishi Kapoor saving money during shopping, there is a tale attached to this.
The actual reason behind this was that Rishi Kapoor was in the city shooting for his next film DO DOONI CHAAR in which he plays a middle class Mathematics teacher. For this role of his, he didn’t want anything fancy that could potentially go against his character. Hence, to lend a realistic feel, he wanted the clothing to match his character’s persons. In quick time, he himself stepped out on the streets of Lajpat Nagar, one of the busiest markets in Delhi for middle class ‘junta’, and picked up a few clothes for himself.
Confirms Rishi Kapoor who has just finished a marathon shooting schedule for the film, ”I set a clear mandate for me that my clothes won’t be costly at all for DO DOONI CHAAR. What was the point in doing so? How can you make a professor wear expensive clothes when he is barely surviving in his middle class bearings? This is why I thought of going out in the market and pick things up myself from the stands. I made sure that my sweaters and pajamas cost not more than Rs. 200.”
Neetu Singh, who makes a comeback to the film industry with DO DOONI CHAAR and is seen as Rishi Kapoor’s wife in the film also, has a similar tale to tell. ”Even though it is my comeback film, I wasn’t tempted to don a glamorous persona. My wardrobe throughout the film’s duration has also been kept very simple and true to the requirement of the Punjabi housewife character that I play.”

It seems the quota of worries for the creative director of widely acclaimed film TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is not over. Amole Gupte, who had written TZP, is now facing problems finding a big star for his next film SAPNO KO GINTE GINTE
Amole, who is responsible for writing the much appreciated plotline of TZP, is finding it hard to convince a big star to do his film. The film which is on the lines of his earlier script assumes importance since Amole will don the director’s hat for the first time.
Amole was earlier scheduled to direct TAARE ZAMEEN PAR but was later replaced by producer Aamir Khan when he decided to act and direct the film himself. Many have seen this as the precursor of the fallout between Aamir and him.
Now, waiting for his next film to take-off, Amole maintains, ”I am waiting for a big star to agree to do my film. Unless that happens, I cannot go ahead with my project.”
Well, for now the master craftsman may not be writing, but he’s for sure enjoying his cameo act in Vishal Bharadwaj’s upcoming film KAMINEY.

His debut venture KAL KISSNE DEKHA is yet to be released but Jackky Bhagnani has already started working on his next film. To be kick started after the release of his first film which is being pitched as a ‘romantic musical thriller’, Jackky’s next film will belong to the same genre (romantic musical comedy) as JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA and warrant a similar characterization and narrative.
The film would yet again be produced by his father Vashu Bhagnani and initial work on casting has already begun.
Says a source from the production team, ”Jackky has just started off as a lead hero and he wants to work in films that are young and energetic. Moreover, he wants to be looked as someone who belongs to the youth and is one of them. He doesn’t want to distance himself from his target audience i.e. youth by being aloof and unapproachable.”
This is the reason why a worldwide contest has been launched where youngsters can approach the production house and get lucky by being selected in the project.
Confirms the man of the moment, Jackky Bhagnani, ”Yes, we are launching our next film on a big scale. It will be having all the ingredients of a young entertainer and will be on the lines of JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA. I loved the film for its simplicity. Also, the very fact that each of the characters in the film was so identifiable and real is what makes me love it even more.”
There is good news for at least five newcomers as the film is looking at introducing three boys and two girls (all Indian though) from across the world. Jackky will of course head the cast while the leading lady opposite him is yet to be finalized.
Considering the fact that JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA was not just centered on Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza but a horde of other friends as well, how much of opportunity can youngsters expect in Jackky’s film?
”At least the same if not more”, promptly says Jackky, ”Yet again, each of these five youngsters will also be an important part of the film. The focus will definitely not just be on me. We are looking at a wide scale search for these young newcomers.”
Vaishali Desai is the leading lady who makes her debut with KAL KISSNE DEKHA that also stars veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. Incidentally, the campus setting warrants a horde of youngsters in this film as well like Akshay Kapoor, Bhairavi Goswami, Kunal Kumar, Rachna Shah and Nushrat Bharucha.

‘After being in the industry for more than a decade, the least I know is to gather the pulse of the audience. I guess every actor from deep within his heart knows whether his film would work or not. In case of TERA MERA KI RISHTA, my heart told me every time that it would work big time. And the moment I returned from my road trip for the film in Punjab, I caught the pulse of the audiences and was reassured that they won’t let me down”, exclaims Jimmy Sheirgill, the lead hero of the film, who can barely conceal his excitement as his Punjabi film has turned out to be one of the biggest hits of his career.
The film was released primarily in the North belt of India and that too on selected screens. Moreover, since EROS has distributed the film, it didn’t really find premium multiplex chain for itself. Also, except for Punjab, the film didn’t see many theaters for itself in Delhi NCR, a region where TERA MERA KI RISHTA could have potentially found good audience.
”The idea was to go slow and release the film in select theaters to begin with. We hand-picked theaters in India while giving it a good release in overseas as well. The demand for the film has been overwhelming wherever it has been released. The target audience has loved the film which is already on a profit making zone”, says a source close to the production house.
Jimmy Sheirgill has the final word, ”Let’s stop blaming recession for all our flops. As the adage goes, a good film will always work. In the times when conventional Hindi films are being shown the door, mainly because they are poor products, a good film like TERA MERA KI RISHTA turning out to be such a huge success is a silver lining. It has further reassured me, especially after A WEDNESDAY that big ideas matter more than anything else.”

Child star Rubina Ali may have gained an overnight stardom with Oscar winner SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, but 9 year-old slum kid isn’t having the best of the times as it should have been. Infact the girl is trapped in a new dilemma.
If the current reports are to be believed than it is being stated that British tabloids have accused the father of Rubina Ali of allegedly trying to sell her off for a whopping sum of Rs 20 million. The tabloids claim to have done a sting operation against the father. In a bid to escape poverty and life in the slum father Rafiq Qureshi and an uncle had put Rubina up for adoption to the tabloid’s undercover reporters posing as a wealthy family from Saudi Arabia. However Rafiq denied the claim and said that he had gone to meet an Arabian sheikh to discuss about an ad film and had no plans to sell off his daughter.
Reportedly Rubina’s real mother Khurshid, who separated from her husband eight years ago, claimed that Rubina’s future is in danger if she remains with Rafiq. She even approached the police for that matter. The other day Khurshid arrived at Bandra’s Gharib Nagar slums where Rubina lives, and abused everyone. She tried to attack Rubina’s stepmum Munni, but others intervened. Meanwhile, Rafiq’s relatives arrived and tried to convince the media how loving a father Rafiq was and why Rubina should live only with him. Later the police recorded the statements of Khurshid, Rafiq and Rubina.
It is being said that Rubina’s statement did not match with that of Rafiq’s. While on camera she maintained her father’s statement. But off camera she held that when her father asked if she would like to go to Saudi Arabia she was quite gung-ho about it. And all set to go to Saudi.
Well all we can say is that Rubina’s life is not as ordinary as that of slum kid anymore.

Jump into any night club and in the list of music that the DJ is going to play would be, ”Mere piya Gaye Rangoon, Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar, and Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar”, but run a quick check with the dancers on the floor about the name of the singer who originally sang these songs, not even 5 percent would be able to answer it. Shamshad Begum, the lady who sang these songs, and was the first female singer having a definite nasal twang in her voice was such a rage in her times, that no music album could be considered as complete if it did not feature a song sung by Shamshad Begum. She is probably the only singer who is alive from her era, as she has already celebrated her 90th birthday, a few days ago.
Before the advent of Asha Bhonsle O.P. Nayyar combination, it was Shamshad Begum who provided the footing to O P Nayyar in the arena of Hindi film music and the same also happened with S D Burman, before he shifted to Lata Mangeshkar as the female playback singer voice. May be, as a fitting tribute to the contribution that he made for O P Nayyar’s music, she is being conferred the O P Nayyar award for her contribution to the Hindi film music. It indeed is an irony of the fate, that this lady singer has been conferred with the only citation in her musical career so far, though her oeuvre would have more than 100 songs in her repertoire that could have been awarded with a citation.
Her singing career began in 1937, and it was the legendary music director Ghulam Haider who brought her talent to the fore in the pre-Independence era. Her success as a singer of foot-tapping numbers started under the baton of C. Ramchandra under whose baton she sang ”Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday ke Sunday” and ” Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon”. S D Burman’s ”Saiyaan Dil Mein Aana Re” followed it. While Naushad exploited her voice for rendering classical songs, OP Nayyar used her voice for the peppy and foot tapping numbers for which Nayyar is famous. Her voice was a perfect foil for the songs, which were in the form of street songs, i.e. being sung by people from the street, and as this genre started fading, along with it, Shamshad Begum’s voice also started fading away. But as long as Hindi songs are in vogue, her voice would be there, and as the aficionados of her voice, it is incumbent upon we fans to keep her memory alive.
