London, Aug 10 (ANI): A new study has revealed that stress and dieting can lead to a positive cannabis test long after the drug was last used.
Lead researcher Jonathon Arnold, from the University of Sydney in Australia, says that the main psychoactive ingredient of cannabis tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is instantly absorbed by fat cells and over the next few days is slowly diffused back into the blood.
Since THC is taken up by fat more readily than it diffuses out, the researcher says that continual intake means some THC can remain in the fat cells.
It has been suggested that stored THC can be released at a later date in situations where the body’s fat is rapidly broken down.
During the study, Arnold and colleague Iain McGregor exposed THC-laden fat cells taken from rats to the stress hormone ACTH.
The researchers found that the hormone increased the speed of release of THC from the cells.
They later injected rats with 10 milligrams per kilogram of THC (equivalent to a person smoking between five and 10 cannabis cigarettes, depending on their strength) every day for 10 days.
Two days later, they injected a third of the rats with ACTH, deprived another third of food for 24 hours, with the rest as controls.
They found that rats that were not given food had double the blood level of THC acid, a metabolite of THC, compared with the controls.
The other group exposed to ACTH also showed a statistically significant increase in THC acid levels.
Arnold said that the main implication of the work could be for legal cases in which athletes or employees have tested positive for cannabis but claim they haven’t recently consumed it,
“But the clincher would be for us to show these results in humans,” New Scientist magazine quoted him as saying.
The study has been published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. (ANI)

Washington, Mar 4 (ANI): Wondering what your favourite stars do to stay in perfect shape despite their busy schedules? Well, here’s your chance to know about the fitness secrets of some of the biggest Hollywood hotties, and what better way to do that than by knowing it from the horse’s mouth itself.
Stars who thronged Leeza Gibbons’ “Night to Make A Difference” Oscar Viewing and After Party, have divulged the details of their workouts, and what they do to stay trim, and here’s what they had to say:
“I do a mixture of cardio and light weights using household items,” Fox News quoted Spice Girl Mel Brown as saying.
Scary Spice further said that she and Victoria Beckham were still BFFs and “talk all the time.”
On the other hand, music legend Olivia Newton-John’s fitness regime was quite exotic.
“I walked the Great Wall of China, it kept me in shape, I did it to raise money for my hospital last year,” she said.
Surprise performer Michael Buble revealed that he just played hockey, and the gym “isn’t his style.”
When it came to Teri Hatcher, she claimed that dieting was something she did not prefer.
And rocker Slash said that all he did to stay in shape was “wake up in the morning.”
However, Muhammad Ali’s ultra-athletic daughter Laila Ali was one girl who reported going to the toughest extreme to stay in shape.
“Sometimes I have to lose 10 lbs the week of a fight and it can be done, it’s a lot of water weight, but it’s taking water pills, getting in the sauna, not eating much, sweating it out, it’s not healthy,” she admitted.
Laila also claimed that she stayed away from alcohol and television.(ANI)

Washington, Feb 18 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet credits her toned physique to “a wing and a prayer”, insisting she’s “too busy” to even think about exercising.
The Oscar nominee, who has struggled with weight since she was a teenager, insists she hasn’t been slimming down for the big ceremony.
When asked if she was dieting, Winslet said, “N.O. (I) absolutely do not. I’m very sort of relaxed and vocal about these things. I have not done a stitch of exercise since October. I literally have not had the time.”
“I’m just going to eat normally, I’m not going to make cuts.
“If I’m keeping it together it’s by a wing and a prayer. I just want to enjoy this,” she added.
The 33-year-old actress is winning accolades for her role in The Reader, and is tipped to win the Best actress at the Oscars.
She has already scooped two awards in Golden Globes and walked away with Best actress gong at the Baftas. (ANI)

London, Jan 28 (ANI): American singer Jessica Simpson was seen flaunting a fuller figure at her gig in Florida during the weekend.
Simpson, 28, who just three years ago sported a near size zero figure, performed at the Kiss Country Chili Cookout in Pembroke Pines singing songs from her album ‘Do You Know’, reports the Daily Express.
She had lost most of her weight while playing the part of Daisy Duke for the Dukes Of Hazzard Hollywood remake in 2005, but she now seems to have put her dieting plans on hold as she concentrates on her career as a country singer.
The singer, who was looking voluptuous, was wearing high-waisted baggy jeans and a slimming black vest. (ANI)

London, Jan 20 (ANI): Ever wondered why your husband was able to shed 10 kilos in just two months while you were still trying to get used to dieting? Well, then here’s the answer for you: men are more likely to resist a plate full of tempting treats than women.
That’s the conclusion of a new study, which involved a group of 23 volunteers, and has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In the experiment, the volunteers did not eat for a day and were then asked to suppress all thoughts of food.
When questioned further, the male participants reported fewer hunger pangs and fewer cravings for food.
Then, by using a brain scanner, scientists tried to see if this was backed up by differences in the patterns of brain activation between men and women.
After the men were told to resist their cravings, there was far less activity in regions of the brain called the amygdala, hippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex and striatum, reports the BBC.
The men seemed to do better and brain scans later revealed they had far less activity than the women in a part of the brain linked to desire for food.
The researchers say this ability to “switch off” thoughts of food may explain lower rates of obesity in men.
The researchers wrote: “Lower cognitive control of brain responses to food stimulation in women compared to men may contribute to gender differences in the prevalence rates of obesity and other eating disorders.”
“Men are more single-minded than women and tend to commit themselves more. Women on the other hand are much more concerned with the needs for others around them,” Dr Ian Campbell, medical director of the charity Weight Concern, said.
“The second reason is oestrogen. Women have plently, and men don’t. Oestrogen works to promote weight gain, or resist weight loss, in women and makes it harder for them to lose weight.
“This study demonstrates the need for weight management programmes to recognise the different needs of different genders, ages, and social and cultural backgrounds. The diet that works best, is the one you want to do,” he added. (ANI)
