Indian cricket team leaves for New Zealand

Mumbai, Feb 19 (ANI): Members of the Indian cricket team left for New Zealand on Thursday morning to play five one-day matches and two Twenty20 matches.

Indian coach Gary Kirsten said on Wednesday that India is not worried about conditions in New Zealand.

“It’s exciting that we have got young cricketers and some real experienced players as well. I know how to plan any conditions against any competition. We are not really concerned about the condition. We will go and assess it and build our plans and do our preparation accordingly,” said Kirsten.

Reacting to Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori’s statement that facing Indian big-hitters like Virender Sehwag in the upcoming home series is “pretty scary”, Dhoni said it was all about form and adaptability and not the size of the ground that mattered.

“So, it’s not about the size of the ground, for us it’s about the form and the adaptability. We have individuals those who can score those big shots, who can rotate, who can change their game plan as and when needed. We have to tackle the whole team because it’s the team sport,” Dhoni said.

India would arrive in New Zealand on February 20 and would open the tour with Twenty20 matches from February 25.

The five-dayers would be held between March 3-14 before the first test in Hamilton on March 18.

The five one-dayers will be played between March 3-14 before the first Test starts in Hamilton on March 18.

The remaining two Tests will be played in Napier (March 26-30) and Wellington (April 3-7).

India has not won any match against the hosts in New Zealand since former Indian skipper Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s 3-1 win 41 years ago.

India lost two tests in the previous tour to New Zealand in 2002. And Blackaps also won the one-day series by 5-2.

India’s confidence is reportedly high after recently completing a victorious tour against Sri Lanka where Indians capped their both test match and one-day series wins with a thrilling victory in a Twenty20 international. (ANI)

Sehwag frontrunner for 2008 Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year gong

Mumbai,Jan.21 (ANI-Business Wire India): Indian opener Virender Sehwag is a frontrunner for the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year 2008 with 59 points.

The other four in the running are Gautam Gambhir, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma.

Sehwag has had a phenomenal year in Test Cricket with a triple hundred against South Africa and a double hundred against Sri Lanka, along with some blazing starts at the top of the order in one day cricket.

Carrying on with his splendid form against the Australians in the Test series, Sehwag also came good in the one day series against England with a blistering 85 in the first game at Rajkot, propelling India to a massive total of 387/5 in their allotted 50 overs. He followed that up with knocks of 68 in Kanpur, 69 in Bangalore, and missed out on a scintillating century with 91 in the fifth game at Cuttack.

He ended the year with a blistering 83 in the second innings of the Chennai Test against England, which facilitated India’s series win.

Gambhir is a close second with 52 points, after matching his opening partner’s good run with scores of 51,70 and 40 in the one dayers against England, along with a gritty century in seaming conditions in the second Test against England in Mohali.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni concluded one of the most successful years by an Indian captain, with four wins in five Tests. Dhoni led from the front with sterling performances at crucial moments to take the third position with 48 points.

Two young bowlers walked away with the fourth and fifth positions with pivotal spells against the visiting English team. Harbhajan Singh kept the pressure on the Englishman with some tight spells during the one dayers, and picked up crucial wickets during the Chennai Test, to capture 41 points.

Ishant Sharma enhanced his reputation as India’s new speed sensation, spearheading the attack with 6 wickets in the two Tests against England, and holds fifth position with 37 points.

As per the Awards criteria, all Indian cricketers who have played international cricket for India will now be invited to vote for their choice of the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year from amongst the top five.

The annual Castrol Awards for Cricketing Excellence were instituted in 1997-98. The rating system takes into account performances by Indian cricketers in Test and One Day international matches during the calendar year. The Awards have been dominated over the last decade by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and this is the first year when neither of the three legends – Sachin, Rahul and Sourav, feature amongst the top five.

In 2008, Castrol also initiated the Castrol Asian Cricketer of the Year Award which was won by Sourav Ganguly for 2007. (ANI)

Bhajji out, Jadeja the new face in Indian ODI team for Lanka tour

Mumbai, Jan.18 (ANI): The national selection committee on Sunday announced its 15-member one-day international team for the upcoming cricket tour of Sri Lanka which includes one new face — Saurashtra all rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

The 20-year-old Jadeja has been rewarded for his consistent performance i.e. taking 42 wickets and scoring over 740 runs in the current first class season His inclusion is stated to have remained on the cards for long time.
Jadeja’s Saurashtra teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, however, was given short shrift as the selectors kept faith largely in the players who had helped India vanquish England 5-0 after winning the previous rubber in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has not been included for the tour because of a hamstring injury.

Two frontline spinners — Pragyan Ojha and Jadeja — have been picked in his place.

The team also includes Uttar Pradesh’s seamer Meerut lad Praveen Kumar, who was left out of the one day team after the ODI series in Sri Lanka in August last year. He makes a comeback into the one-day fold.

Virat Kohli, the Delhi batsman who was part of the ODI squad in the home series against England, was dropped from the team announced by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) joint secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a meeting of the selectors in Mumbai on Sunday.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also present at the meeting.

The Indian squad would assemble in Chennai on January 25 and practice under lights at the Chidambaram Stadium. It will depart for Colombo the next day, Jagdale said in a statement.

The team consists of seven frontline batsmen, including captain and stumper Dhoni, three all-rounders, four pace bowlers and spinner Ojha.

The India cricket squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Sachin R. Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Praveen Kumar and Pragyan Ojha.

The first two ODIs of the series would be played at the Rangiri Dambulla International cricket stadium on January 28 and 30.

Colombo’s R Premadasa International Cricket stadium will host the third and fourth matches on February 2 and 5, besides the only Twenty20 match of the tour scheduled for February 10.

The fifth ODI is scheduled on February 8 at Sinhalese Sports Club, also in Colombo. (ANI)

However, Lakshmi has made it clear that they are just good friends and there is nothing more to it. On the other hand, MSD was nowhere to be found for his comment. Let us see how this takes shape.

Toughest Test win under Dhoni’s captaincy

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today described the enthralling six-wicket win over England in the first cricket Test here as the toughest of his four-match old tenure as captain.

Dhoni was all praise for man of the match Virender Sehwag who gave a rollicking start to the Indian run chase with a 68-ball 83 last evening.Pietersen said his side would take the positives from the match and come back hard in the second Test at Mohali.Meanwhile, the BCCI announced a sum of Rs 3 crore to be given to the servicesmen, who died or got injured in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Rs 2 crore would be distributed to those servicemen who died in the tragedy while Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for the servicemen injured.

India Wins Hero Honda Cup – ODI Series vs England 4 – 0 : White Wash

India Wins Hero Honda Cup - ODI Series vs England 4 - 0 : White WashIndia sealed the ODI series against England with a thrilling 19 run win at Bangalore. A white wash. India wins the series 4 – 0. Sehwag was declared Man of the Match.

The match proved to be a thriller despite the loss of numerous overs. The visitors were done in by the high run-rate, partly due to the Duckworth-Lewis system coming into play but primarily because of the brilliant all-round performance of Dhoni’s men.

The last wicket to be taken was the eighth wicket of Paul Collingwood perishing to a super catch by Sachin Tendulkar.

Graeme Swann fell to a terrible mix-up on the pitch that got him run out at 5 runs. The previous over had seen a Gautam Gambhir flier to get rid of dangerman Samit Patel off a Zaheer special. With six wickets gone and the run-rate going beyond the roof, India smelled the sweet fragrance of victory in front of an enthralled home crowd.

Just before this, Ishant Sharma had made his presence felt at Bangalore as he stuck a fatal blow to England in the form of Andrew Flintoff’s wicket. The batsman was caught by Zaheer Khan and the fall brought out Samit Patel to the crease who started the festivities with a cracking boundary.

Prior to this, Owais Shah’s brilliant innings came to an end after Zaheer Khan got him caught by Sachin Tendulkar at cover point. Shah contributed 72 runs to the team’s cause.

Shah earlier waged a valiant battle despite the mounting odds and hit a blistering fifty at a time when his team needed it the most. His effort took the team’s total past the 100 run-mark.

Ishant Sharma had also claimed the prized scalp of England skipper Kevin Pietersen. The batsman was bowled with a length delivery on the off stump at a score of 5 runs.

Earlier, India’s ace tweaker Harbhajan Singh spun havoc for England as he claimed the wicket of Ian Bell. The batsman was clean bowled at a score of 12 runs.

England had suffered their first setback in the run chase early on as Munaf Patel got the desired breakthrough in the form of Ravi Bopara’s wicket. The batsman was caught brilliantly by Ishant Sharma at mid-on. He departed after scoring a run, bringing out Owais Shah to the crease.

As per the D/L method, India`s score jumped up to 197. England would need 198 off the 22 overs to seal their first win of the series.

Indian Innings

India posted a good total of 166 runs in the stipulated 22 overs even as MS Dhoni fell victim to Samit Patel after scoring 9 runs. The innings was ended with Yusuf Pathan who cracked the last delivery for a massive six that set the solid target for the visitors.

England spinner Graeme Swann had spun into action in the penultimate over as he got the prized scalp of Gautam Gambhir. The batsman walked back after scoring 40 runs off 37 balls.

India lost their second wicket in the form of Virender Sehwag when the batsman was trying to slog one out of the park off a Swann delivery. He departed after cracking 69 quick runs as there were less than five overs left in the innings upon the restart of play

The fourth ODI against England resumed after the second hiccup of the rain gods and the match was reduced to 22 overs a side.

Revised Conditions: Two bowlers can bowl 5 overs each, three bowlers can bowl 4 overs each. The bowling and the batting powerplays will consist of 2 overs each.

India’s blasting opener Virender Sehwag had resumed play with a vengeance as he slammed his 32nd ODI fifty against a stiff England bowling attack. However, the play was delayed again due to incessant rain that left the fate of the fourth ODI headed towards the doldrums.

Prior to this, Gautam Gambhir came in to replace Sachin at the crease and got into business without wasting any time. He struck four boundaries in quick succession to take India to 61 for the loss of one wicket at the end of over number 10.

Virender Sehwag also completed 6000 runs in ODIs when the batsman reached the score of 36 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar could not celebrate his return to the ODI side after a hiatus of more than seven months as Stuart Broad played spoilsport and rattled his stumps. Sachin departed after scoring 11 runs.

Toss

England skipper Kevin Pietersen won the toss and chose to bowl first in the first day night game of the Hero Honda Cup here at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
