Jay-Z gives full-throated reply to rap’s black critics

London, Sept 4 (ANI): Rapper Jay-Z has rubbished all criticism of hip-hop by well-known African-Americans who believe the genre degrades their ethnicity.

The superstar said the protests were only for “publicity purposes”.

Hip-hop recently generated a lot of disapproval from prominent black celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby, who say it is misogynistic and frequent uses the racial N-word.

An annoyed Cosby even went on to pull off a hip-hop album that was “without the profanity, misogyny, violence and braggadocio”.

However Jay-Z thinks otherwise. The hitmaker says rap portrays important issues in its own style.

The Daily Express quoted him as saying: “Put it like this; everything is birthed from somewhere real, right? These emotions and this anger and this angst in reality rap is coming from a real place.

“People in those circles try to dismiss it, buy you can’t because it’s part of culture. They only attack hip-hop because, and I hate to sound like a cynic, but this is all done for publicity purposes, right? You don’t attack the real issue – you attack the thing that’s popular.” (ANI)

Oz Federal Govt. cracks downs on weight-loss industry as obesity rate rises

Melbourne, Aug 19 (ANI): The Federal Government in Australia has decided to take a look into the massive diet and weight-loss industry, following reports that the obesity rate in the country is still climbing.

Weight-loss programs and products will have to prove that they can help people keep off the kilos long-term as the Federal Government cracks down on the 414-million dollar-a-year industry.

The Kevin Rudd Government’s Preventative Health Taskforce is understood to have called for the weight-loss industry to be regulated in a report handed down last month.

It follows growing evidence that diets may actually be adding to the obesity crisis, as overweight people lose weight rapidly while following programs, but quickly put it back on after they stop.

The taskforce said that young women in particular were spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on such programs to manage their weight.

Despite this, the nation’s obesity rate was climbing with more than 60 per cent of adults now overweight or obese.

While weight-loss programs and pharmacy-based meal replacement programs were popular, the task force said there was limited data to show they were actually effective.

It wants a wide-ranging review of diet products and a common code of practice drawn up covering the cost, the training of counsellors and the promotion of the diets.

The Dietitians Association of Australia is backing the recommendation.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a spokesman said all commercial diet programs should be assessed by a body of experts similar to the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which assesses drugs for safety and efficacy before they can go on sale.

The association said regulation should require businesses marketing a diet program to provide evidence to a panel of experts showing what percentage of those who used the diet kept the weight off two years after starting.

Chief executive Claire Hewat said a good diet would result in weight loss of about half a kilogram per week.

“If you can lose 5 per cent of your body weight you are doing really well,” News.com.au quoted her as saying.

“Diets are not the point, it’s lifestyle change that is needed,” she stated. (ANI)

Brit dog’s home struggling to cope with growing number of cats!

London, Aug 19 (ANI): A Brit dog’s home is said to be facing a crisis, for it is being overwhelmed by the growing number of cats arriving there.

Staff at Battersea dogs’ home in London are desperately appealing for would-be owners to come forward to help with a “cat emergency”.

Battersea is world-renowned as a dogs’ home, but it is less well known that it also has a cattery, which is nearly at full capacity because fewer and fewer people are choosing to adopt a cat.

The number of cats being found a new owner is nine percent down, compared with this time last year, with only 1,174 cats having been rehomed by Battersea this year, compared to 1,290 cats by July in 2008.

And there has been a summer influx of kittens. Of the 145 cat pens, 143 are in use and there are a further 173 cats waiting to be admitted.

“We are having a cat emergency at Battersea – we have more cats than there are in the entire cattery waiting to come in,” the Daily Star quoted a spokeswoman for the home as saying.

Ros Davies, “cat rehomer” at the rescue centre, the full name of which is Battersea Dogs And Cats Home, said there is a huge range of cats and kittens looking for new homes.

“Summer is traditionally a busy time of the year for us because the warm weather usually means there are more kittens brought in,” she said.

“But this summer’s nine per cent drop in rehoming figures has taken us all by surprise.

“People might think of Battersea as more of a home for dogs than cats, but cats are just as important and need loving new homes, too,” she stated.

A RSPCA spokesman said: “We have seen an increase over the past year in the number of abandoned pets. We put that partly down to the recession. What we don’t want is for people to volunteer if they can’t look after an animal. People should not come forward on a whim as it is quite a commitment to look after an animal,” he added. (ANI)

And Bo wants to continue for another five years to participate in the institution’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Bo has won several accolades for calligraphy in national competitions. (ANI)

Fawcett’s best pal defends O’Neal over cash greedy claims

London, August 14 (ANI): Farrah Fawcett’s best friend of 30 years, Alana Stewart, has slammed reports alleging that the late star’s long-time love Ryan O’Neal was with her because of her bank balance.

Stewart, who remained with the actress during her cancer battle, insisted Ryan is a “good guy”, adding he had more money than Fawcett.

“It’s almost like a joke frankly and anybody who knows them well knows that’s so not true,” The Daily Express quoted Stewart as saying.

“They were together over 30 years and frankly Ryan always had a lot more money than Farrah. He invested his money from day one very well.

“He was very loving with her those last few months and it was very clear that he was heartbroken. He was losing the love of his life. That’s the only reason he was there. I am a supporter of Ryan’s because I know how much he loved her and still does.

“Ryan is a complex guy but he’s a good guy and he’s got a good heart and he was very good to Farrah those last number of months.
As far as I’m concerned that’s really the end of the story,” she added. (ANI)

Trescothick said possibility of England comeback gave him nightmares

London, Aug.14 (ANI): Former opener Marcus Trescothick has admitted that suggestions he might come out of international retirement for next week’s showdown Ashes Test had given him nightmares.

Trescothick quit international cricket 18 months ago because he suffers from depression and does not want to tour again, but that did not stop suggestions that he might be the man for a crisis at the Brit Oval.

Trescothick, 33, has dismissed the idea and revealed he had woken up early one morning in a cold sweat dreaming about playing for England again.

“There is a nightmare a lot of cricketers experience that they can’t get their pads on when they are due in to bat. My dream was a variation of that. I couldn’t get my England kit out of my bag! The other players were waiting for me on the pitch to do a team photo so I was in a right panic. I woke up in a cold sweat,” the Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

“Perhaps that told me something. It gives me a massive kick that I am still thought good enough to come back and play at international level, but I’ve gone too far down the line in battling my stress problems to change my mind now about ending my England career,” he added.

Trescothick said: “My wife, Hayley, and I did talk about what my reaction should be if I were asked and we ended up having a good chuckle about it. She was prepared to back me if I wanted to play at The Oval and part of us both fancied the thought of getting involved again.”

Trescothick and Mark Ramprakash have been two names touted this week as potential England saviours after the debacle of Headingley, which saw Australia level the series 1-1.

Trescothick, writing in his column in a West Country newspaper, added: “I had a great time playing international cricket and we both have some very happy memories of my days as an England player. But it just didn’t feel right.

“Nothing in me made me feel I had to do it so I came to the conclusion that I don’t want it enough. Andrew Strauss did ring me over the last few days, but it was to ask me to play in a golf day for him. We did talk about England, but there was nothing direct about my involvement and he knows I won’t be reconsidering.” (ANI)

Kaneria being wasted by Pak team management: Saqlain

Colombo, Aug.14 (ANI): Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has criticized selectors for not picking leg-spinner Danish Kaneria for the one-day games, saying the bowler is being wasted by the team management by playing him only in Test matches.

“Kaneria is a very experienced bowler and he has quality about him. I would like to see him playing in Tests and other forms of the game as well,” Mushtaq said.

Mushtaq believed that Kaneria together with off-spinner Saeed Ajmal could form a lethal spin attack for Pakistan in the limited over games.

“Pakistan should take advantage of the fact that they have a seasoned bowler like Danish; he and Saeed Ajmal can form a potent and effective spin pair for Pakistan in Test and ODI games,” The Daily Times quoted Mushtaq, as saying.

Kaneria, who was overlooked in the first two matches of the Sri Lanka series, has taken nearly 250 wickets in the longer version of the game.

He was not considered for the one-day international series and the one-off Twenty20 match even after grabbing five wickets in the first innings of the third Test of the three match series.

When asked about his new assignment as New Zealand’s spin bowling coach, Mushtaq said he accepted the offer as Pakistani cricket administration never contacted him for any coaching job.

“I am a professional and I have to earn my living from somewhere,” he said. (ANI)

Woman, 80, raped by 70-year-old ‘hakeem’ in Pak

Islamabad, Aug 13 (ANI): An 80-year-old woman in Pakistan was allegedly raped by a 70-year-old ‘hakeem’ in his clinic after he intoxicated her.

The elderly woman registered an FIR against the accused Ahmed Din and Kot Lakhpat police arrested him on her complaint, charging him with rape, unnatural offence and intoxication, reports the Daily Times.

The complainant, Fateh Bibi, in her application submitted stated that she went to Ashraf Dawakhana in Awami Colony for medicine for her headache.

She said the hakeem gave her some medicine and advised her to take it right then, saying that it would relieve her of pain immediately.

Fateh alleged that after taking the medicine, she fell unconscious and the hakeem tied her up and undressed her.

She said the accused raped and sodomised her. She requested the police to take action against the accused for raping her and hurting her by giving her a poisonous substance.

Kot Lakhpat Police Station House Officer (SHO) Farooq Ahmed said the police had registered an FIR against the hakeem and arrested him. He said the medical examination of the woman had proved the allegations.

He said above all, the accused had confessed his crime. The police would produce him in the court today (Thursday) to get his physical remand. He said police were interrogating the accused, who had not confessed to any other crime yet.

He said the accused seemed to have committed such a crime for the first time.

Rana Muhammad Shabbir advocate said the offences mentioned in the FIR could amount to capital punishment.

He said if the offences were proved in the court, punishment for rape under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) should be death or imprisonment for 25 years and should also be liable to fine.

He said punishment for committing unnatural offence under Section 377 of the PPC was life imprisonment and should be liable to fine.

Punishment for hurting someone by means of poison under Section 337-J of the PPC was imprisonment up to 10 years, he added. (ANI)

Biometric identification of rural workers in Rajasthan

Karauli (Rajasthan), Aug 11 (ANI): The district authorities of Karauli in Rajasthan have introduced the thumb impression system to register the physical presence of workers engaged in the projects under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

This move has been initiated by them to minimise the leakage of allotted government funds through fake job cards and bogus attendance records.

Daily wage workers under the NREGA said some individuals manipulate and even make three to four fake job cards in favour one person.

“It affects us because some people make fake job cards using their powers. I have a family of ten members and we were supposed to get two job cards, which we do not have. But people with money and power get around three to four job cards,” said Dilip, a labourer engaged in NREGA project.

Considering such trends, the authorities said that the use of the thumb impression machine would minimise the chances of getting forge job cards since it records and registers the thumb impression of a worker.

“To break the nexus of fake job cards in the NREGA, we have introduced thump impression machine to take the attendance of workers. In this, we use the biometric technology and take the thump impression of a worker because a person can fake his job card and signature, but he or she cannot fake the thumb impression.

After taking the thumb impression, we get the details of the person registered in his job card,” said Neeraj Kumar Pawan, collector.

The specially designed machine works on biometric technology and saves the thumb impression of a worker.

The machine is imported from Japan and China, cost around rupees 25,000 each. The device is battery operated and can be easily carried at work sites.

The attendance of a worker is registered in this device and the payment is done on the basis of data recorded in it. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)

Jennifer Hudson laughs off baby rumours

London, Apr 24 (ANI): Jennifer Hudson has laughed off rumours suggesting that she’s pregnant.

Essence magazine had earlier alleged the Dreamgirls actress/singer was expecting her first child with fiance David Otunga, claiming they had received confirmation “through two sources close to” Hudson, reports The Daily Express.

However, the star’s representative has dismissed the happy news, saying there is “no, no, no, no way” the rumours are true, reports TheCelebrityTruth.com.

Hudson, who was a contestant at “American Idol”, saw the darkest period of her life when her mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Chicago.

The beauty’s estranged brother-in-law William Balfour was later charged with the killings.

Hudson returned to the stage on February 1, singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl.

A week later, she won her first Grammy Award for best R and B album. (ANI)

The nine-year-old was released from Doncaster Royal Infirmary overnight after undergoing two operations on his injured arm.

His 11-year-old friend and uncle is still recovering in the hospital following the incident in the former pit village of Edlington, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.

Two young brothers, aged 10 and 11, appeared at Doncaster Youth Court on Tuesday accused of their attempted murder.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The 11-year-old boy is still recovering in Doncaster Royal Infirmary after he was transferred from Sheffield Children’s Hospital on Tuesday.

“The nine-year-old boy was released from hospital overnight. Times and dates to interview the victims have yet to be decided.”

The father of the 11-year-old said that his son was too bruised to be hugged and was so traumatised by his ordeal that he cried when he saw an unfamiliar face.

He told the Daily Mirror: “We’ve been giving him loads of hugs and love. But there are only so many hugs you can give him as the poor lad is bruised to death. If you tap him on the shoulder he groans in pain.

“He’s still not eating or drinking very well. But he’s healing and doing a lot better and we’re over the moon. It could have been so much worse.”

Police were called at 2pm on Saturday when the nine-year-old boy was found wandering, covered in blood, in Auburn Road. The youngster told the people who found him where to find his uncle, who was discovered unconscious in a nearby wooded ravine.

USD/JPY Daily Commentary for 4.8.09

The USD/JPY is wrestling with the almighty 100 level again today after briefly dropping below. The USD/JPY strengthened slightly after Japan released a better than excepted trade balance. However, the optimism is faint since a record decline in imports is responsible for the improvement.

Therefore, consumers are tightening their budgets as the economic downturn picks up steam. Japan continues to be the hardest hit in the global economic crisis. Export demand has been cut in half with consumers world-wide losing their taste for durable goods.

Though the recent rally in the USD/JPY does provide some relief for the Japanese economy, the currency pair is still trading 20% below June 2007 levels. However, a stabilizing American economy could help push the USD/JPY higher since the currency pair is being valued by the comparative performance of both economies.

That being said, the USD/JPY has three more downtrend lines to push through before it can yield substantial gains. 100 will continue to be a battle zone as U. S. equities struggle with their own demons. If U. S. equities make another leg down, we would not be surprised to see the USD/JPY follow suit.

Japan will release Core Machinery Orders tonight. The data is forward looking since corporate capital expenditure normally signifies expansion. Analysts are expecting a decline of -6.8%. Fundamentally, our 100.28 support turns resistance while we maintain our resistances of 100.71, 101.44, 101.98, and 102.50.

To the downside, we hold our supports of 99.79, 99.06, 98.16, and 97.59 with fresh bottom-end resting at 97.11. The USD/JPY is currently exchanging at 99.99.

GBP/USD Daily Commentary for 4.8.09

The Cable continues to show relative strength on the back of surprisingly positive data surfacing from Britain over the past couple weeks. The GBP/USD kept its cool yesterday despite the broad selloff in U. S. equities and the Cable is running with the EUR/USD and U. S. equities Wednesday morning.

We expect to see the Cable’s strength continue as long as Britain’s data outperforms and its major financial institutions stay out of the headlines. If U. S. equities and the EUR/USD head north today, the GBP/USD should follow. On the other hand, if U. S. equities selloff again, we may see the Cable hold up once more.

However, we can’t forget the importance of the financial industry to Britain’s economy. Therefore, if U. S. banks hit another roadblock, the GBP/USD may have no choice but to head lower. Speculation set aside, the Cable is in great shape for the time being. It sits comfortably above our 1st tie uptrend line with no downtrend line in sight.

On the other hand, the failure of the GBP/USD to eclipse February highs and 1.50 is a cause for concern, and we’ll keep this in mind. If the Cable can climb back above March highs today we could see a nice short-term pop.

Even though Britain is quite on the news front today, the Pound could come alive tomorrow with a PPI release coupled with a BOE rate decision. Analysts are expecting the BOE to hold the benchmark rate at .50%. Fundamentally, we maintain resistance of 1.4730 with additional resistances hanging at 1.4770, 1.4834, 1.4883 and 1.4946.

The 1.50 level serves as a key psychological barrier while the 1.45 area acts as a psychological cushion. To the downside, we hold our supports of 1.4676, 1.4612, 1.4571, 1.4538 and 1.4484. The GBP/USD is currently exchanging at 1.4702.

EUR/USD Daily Commentary for 4.8.09

The EUR/USD is strengthening after yesterday’s large losses in the wake of a better than expected trade balance number out of Germany coupled with encouraging German factory orders data. Germany’s trade balance seems to be bottoming out, indicating stabilization in its export industry.

Though Germany’s factory orders data came in below analyst expectations, the number shows a vast improvement from 2009’s previous releases. Germany and France are the heavy-weights in the EU economically, so signs of improvement in German production is welcoming news for a beleaguered EUR/USD.

The EUR/USD has caught the brunt of the pullback in U. S. equities since Trichet and the ECB offered little certainty concerning future monetary policy shocks. The positive data is allowing the EUR/USD to rally from oversold conditions as the S and P futures find strength in their key psychological 800 level.

Consequently, the currency pair has managed to stay above March 30 lows and is propelling from our 1st tier uptrend line. As a result, the uptrend has been saved, for now. We could see a nice pop in the EUR/USD as our trend lines collide, signifying the uncertainty prevalent in the marketplace.

However, the currency pair may wait for U. S. equities to commit to an uptrend or crash back into their downtrend before it makes another real directional move. The heightened volatility we are witnessing stems from the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing announcement, and we don’t expect the wild ride to slow any time soon. Fundamentally, we maintain our supports of 1.3223, 1.3192, 1.3162, 1.3126 and 1.3088.

To the topside, we hold our resistances of 1.3271, 1.3323, 1.3351, 1.3375 and 1.3413. The 1.35 area acts a psychological barrier again with 1.30 serving as a key psychological cushion. The EUR/USD is currently exchanging at 1.3245.

USD/JPY Daily Commentary for 4.6.09

As expecting the USD/JPY is launching after finally eclipsing February highs and consequently the highly psychological 100 level. Putting the 100 area behind the USD/JPY is a huge step psychologically, and could proceed to yield a strong leg up in the near-term.

All the USD/JPY needs to do is make a follow-through and push past our next two downtrend lines. If this happens, there are no foreseeable downtrend lines remaining, and the currency pair can march on to huge gains.

The bears are finally giving into the bulls after last week’s data from Japan showed the Japanese economy is weakening considerably as compared to America’s economy.

With both central banks maintaining a benchmark rate around zero while using quantitative easing, the pricing of the USD/JPY relies on comparative economic performance.

The Japanese government is expected to fire back on Friday with what should be a new $100 billion stimulus plan. It will be interesting to see how the USD/JPY reacts, and could be what holds back a breakout in the currency pair.

Investors will also be keeping a close watch on corporate earnings from America this week and the performance of U. S. equities considering the positive correlation between the USD/JPY and the S and P futures.

Since the S and P futures could be in for some near-term profit taking, we could see the USD/JPY return towards 100 today as investors test the solidity of the psychological move. Fundamentally, we find resistances of 101.44, 101.98, 102.50, 103.10, and 103.76.

To the downside, we see supports of 100.71, 100.28, 99.79, 99.06, and 98.16. The USD/JPY is currently exchanging at 100.89.

GBP USD Technical Forex Analysis for Forex Traders

Rate pressures up to within striking distance of 1.5000 overnight; likely offers will be thick on any further advance. Aggressive traders can look to lighten up on longs above 1.4950 area. Stops noted above the 1.4880 area on the way up with traders noting stops under there on the way down.

Traders note support is likely firm at the 1.4450 area as expected; offers ahead of 1.4700 easily absorbed keeping the bias to the upside. Close over 1.4900 argues for further gains but tech resistance is firm ahead of 1.5000. Overhead target of the 1.5000 area likely to trade but expect pressure. Traders feel the 23-year lows will likely remain secure. The shorts may have lost control of the market above the 1.4440 area now and if that is the case a test of the 1.5000 area is almost a done-deal. Traders report stops in-range adding for two-way action.

EURO USD Technical Forex Analysis for Forex Traders

Rate consolidates and holds gains but is capped at 1.3580 with stops likely above 1.3600 now. Rate is solid above the 100 day MA. Traders note offers above the 1.3630 area but bids continue to support ahead of 1.3480; foothold over the 1.3500 handle likely to encourage a short-squeeze. Rate likely has stops building in both directions; shorts lose control of the market after rate clears stops above the 1.3430 area.

Action remains two-way; any move lower is likely supported on dips. Overhead resistance at 1.3330/50 area now support on a pullback; aggressive traders can ADD on a dip. Possibly more official and semi-official bids overnight with traders noting Middle-eastern names on the bid. Long-term bulls are likely still in control of the market and this significant pullback is a buying opportunity in my view.

Bangladesh candidates spent three times more than poll limits

Dhaka, April 7 (IANS) Candidates in Bangladesh’s parliamentary poll spent three times more than the limits imposed by the Election Commission, says Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

Candidates spent an average of over Tk 4.4 million ($63,000 approximately), flouting the Election Commission poll expenditure limit of Tk 1.5 million ($21,000) for each candidate, TIB has said in its report released Monday.

At least 87 percent of the 300 candidates who won last December’s poll from out of the 1,500-plus contenders spent beyond the limit, TIB researcher Shadhan Kumar Das said.

The findings contradict the mandatory poll expenditure statements submitted to the Election Commission by the winners of the Awami League (AL) that won 230 seats, Jatiya Party (27 seats), Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) that won two seats each, The Daily Star reported.

Candidates of the cash-rich JeI, widely perceived as getting its funds from West Asia, spent an average of Tk 7.4 million, the BNP nominees spent Tk 4.49 million and the AL nominees spent Tk 4 million.

‘The EC must audit the electoral expenditures of the candidates and punish the violators according to the law,’ said Muzaffer Ahmad, chairperson of the TIB.

According to the TIB, the national chapter of an international NGO, the highest spending by a single candidate was Tk 28 million while the lowest was Tk 434,000.

Eleven surveyed candidates, who won the polls, spent within the Election Commission set limit. Six were AL candidates, four were BNP nominees and one was an independent. TIB did not disclose their names.

Fifty-five percent of the 88 surveyed candidates had criminal cases against them while 50 percent of them were still facing such cases.

Mitsubishi raises output target for electric car, AS

TOKYO (AP) Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will increase production of its planned electric vehicle after orders for its first 2,000 cars were quickly filled, a spokesman said Friday.

Japan’s No. 4 automaker aims to roll out the “i MiEV” zero-emissions car for leasing in Japan by July.

The first year’s planned production of 2,000 units has already sold out with Japanese corporate leasers, including utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. and convenience store chain Lawson, said company spokesman Kai Inada.

Due to the strong interest, Mitsubishi Motors is raising its output of the model for 2010 from 4,000 to 5,000 units, he said. Mitsubishi Motors plans to sell the i MiEV which can be recharged from a regular home socket in Europe through Peugeot Citroen PSA in 2010, and sales to individual consumers in Japan are planned for 2011.

The potential growth of such “green” cars is offering a glimmer of hope for the world’s automakers, which are struggling to cope with plunging auto demand caused by the global economic slowdown and credit crunch. Earlier this week, Malaysia’s national car maker Proton and Detroit Electric, a Netherlands-based company, signed a $555 million deal to make electric cars by early next year.

U.S.-based Tesla Motors has a prototype electric car that is scheduled to be produced by 2011. General Motors Corp.

, Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co.

, are also planning electric vehicles. Governments in the U.S., Europe and Japan are offering or planning consumer incentives, such as tax breaks, for environmentally friendly vehicles.

While rival Japanese automakers like Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.

focus on gas-electric hybrid vehicles, Tokyo-based Mitsubishi is making its i MiEV the pillar of its ecological strategy. Mitsubishi is hoping to reach annual sales of 10,000 electric vehicles soon, but Inada called “speculative” the report Friday in The Nikkei, Japan’s top business daily, which said i MiEV production will reach 20,000 in fiscal 2011

Militants take over emerald mine in Pakistan

Islamabad, April 2 (DPA) Taliban militants have taken control of an emerald mine in Pakistan’s troubled North-West Frontier Province and started extraction, a news report said Thursday.

More than 70 militants raided the Gojaro Kalai mine in the Shangla district Wednesday, forcing the private guards deployed there to abandon their positions, the Daily Times newspaper reported.

The US firm Luxury International had leased the mine from Pakistan’s government, but it suspended operations there in the wake of the deteriorating security situation in the region.

After taking over the mine, the rebels asked locals to resume work and share the profits with them.

Sher Bacha, mayor of the area, told the Daily Times that more than 1,000 people worked at the mine Wednesday whereas the US firm had employed 100 miners.

Shangla lies next to the Swat district, where militants loyal to local radical cleric Maulana Fazullah have waged an armed campaign since mid-2007 to enforce Taliban-style laws.

The government recently signed a peace deal with the hardliners in the region, but the truce failed to completely end the violence and instead strengthened the militants’ control.
