YSR’s death triggers off Congress succession race in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Forty-eight hours after the tragic death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash, a fierce succession race has begun notwithstanding the Congress party’s decision to put off the selection of a new leader till early next week.

Seeking to cash in on an emotional wave of sympathy, loyalists of the deceased chief minister have reportedly unleashed a strident campaign for making his son, Jaganmohan Reddy, the new chief minister.

“Jagan knew the mind of Rajasekhara Reddy. He alone can finish the unfulfilled agenda of his father,” said government chief whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka who is marshalling the MLAs in favour of Jagan.

Congress sources in Delhi have thrown up other names as possible successors. They include Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of State for Defence M. Pallam Raju, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao’s daughter and junior Union minister Purandeshwari Devi and acting chief minister M K Rosaiah.

Almost all the state ministers, about 22 MPs and several Congress legislators have pitched for Jaganmohan Reddy through the media even as hundreds of party workers gathered at the secretariat,

CM’s camp office, Gandhi Bhavan and various traffic intersections are vocally making a similar demand.

The Jagan group has reportedly met Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily at the Lake View guest house to pursue their demand even as many Congress MLAs faxed individual memorandum to the party headquarters in New Delhi in support of Jaganmohan Reddy as CM.

They also called on Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari and submitted a list of 122 signatures in support of him being made the chief minister.

According to sources, there was even an attempt to pressure the governor to swear in Jagan as acting CM immediately, but that was abandoned as Rosaiah had already been sworn in by the time the loyalists reached Raj Bhavan.

Jagan, 36, is a first time MP from Kadapa and is merely 100 days old in politics. While Veerappa Moily made it clear that Rosaiah was only an interim CM and that the Congress high command will chose YSR’s successor in the next few days. (ANI)

MEA Minister Krishna’s plane diverted to Karachi due to bad weather

Dubai/New Delhi, Sep.4 (ANI): An Emirates Airline aircraft carrying Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna had to be diverted to Karachi late on Thursday night due to bad weather in Indian airspace.

Krishna, who was in Brazil on an official visit, had cut short his trip and was returning to New Delhi following the death of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in a chopper crash.

“The pilot of the Emirates flight sought permission from Pakistani authorities to land in Karachi after bad weather developed over New Delhi. The aircraft was granted permission and landed in Karachi at 10.35 p.m.,” a television channel quoted Civil Aviation Authority spokesman George Pervez, as saying.

After waiting in vain for over an hour for weather to clear over India, the pilot decided to fly to Dubai at 11.44 p.m. after the aircraft was refuelled, Pervez said.

Reports said that besides Krishna, several senior Indian officials were also on the flight. The total number of passengers on the flight could not be immediately ascertained. No passengers were allowed to leave the aircraft while it was on the ground in Karachi.

The flight left for the Indian capital early this morning. (ANI)

Light aircraft crashes in Indonesia’s Papua

Jakarta – A light airplane crashed Thursday morning in Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua, and all four of its crew members were feared killed, news reports and officials said.

The Avia Star aircraft was en route from the capital Jayapura to Wamena district, carrying cargo and four crew members. It crashed at about 7 am (2200 GMT Wednesday) on Pike Mountain, said Papua police chief Bagus Eko Danto.

Bagus told Elshinta private radio that so far two bodies had been founded and a search was underway for the other two. He said the plane broke into pieces.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

It was the second fatal air crash this week in Indonesia. On Monday, a Fokker F-27 belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed in West Java’s Bandung airport, killing all 24 people on board. (dpa)

EUR/USD Daily Commentary for 4.8.09

The EUR/USD is strengthening after yesterday’s large losses in the wake of a better than expected trade balance number out of Germany coupled with encouraging German factory orders data. Germany’s trade balance seems to be bottoming out, indicating stabilization in its export industry.

Though Germany’s factory orders data came in below analyst expectations, the number shows a vast improvement from 2009’s previous releases. Germany and France are the heavy-weights in the EU economically, so signs of improvement in German production is welcoming news for a beleaguered EUR/USD.

The EUR/USD has caught the brunt of the pullback in U. S. equities since Trichet and the ECB offered little certainty concerning future monetary policy shocks. The positive data is allowing the EUR/USD to rally from oversold conditions as the S and P futures find strength in their key psychological 800 level.

Consequently, the currency pair has managed to stay above March 30 lows and is propelling from our 1st tier uptrend line. As a result, the uptrend has been saved, for now. We could see a nice pop in the EUR/USD as our trend lines collide, signifying the uncertainty prevalent in the marketplace.

However, the currency pair may wait for U. S. equities to commit to an uptrend or crash back into their downtrend before it makes another real directional move. The heightened volatility we are witnessing stems from the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing announcement, and we don’t expect the wild ride to slow any time soon. Fundamentally, we maintain our supports of 1.3223, 1.3192, 1.3162, 1.3126 and 1.3088.

To the topside, we hold our resistances of 1.3271, 1.3323, 1.3351, 1.3375 and 1.3413. The 1.35 area acts a psychological barrier again with 1.30 serving as a key psychological cushion. The EUR/USD is currently exchanging at 1.3245.

‘Jackomania’ grips people worldwide

London, Mar 13 (ANI): It seems that Jackomania has gripped people all over the world.

As Michael Jackson prepares for his ‘last ever’ London gigs, the demand for concert tickets has soared, leaving the sales website eventually crashed.

Nearly 360,000 fans have snapped up tickets for his final UK concerts so far.

Die-hard Jacko fans, from Congo and Australia have got the chance to get their tickets.

The first 100,000 pre-sale tickets were snapped up within two hours of the website opening yesterday and in 10 hours, some 240,000 tickets – costing 50 pounds and 75 pounds – had been sold.

Some people are even trying to cash in. One of the punters has already put a pair of tickets on eBay for 10,000 pounds.

“It’s been quite extraordinary. Showbusiness history has been made,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesman for promoters AEG Live as saying.

“The demand has been massive,” he added.

Some fans were disappointed when a technical glitch caused the website to crash.

“We witnessed an unprecedented level of demand. Apologies to those fans who were unable to log on,” said Ticketmaster managing director Chris Edmonds. (ANI)

17 feared dead as copter falls into frigid Atlantic

Ontario (Canada), Mar.13 (ANI): At least 17 people, including 16 offshore oil rig workers, are feared dead after their helicopter fell in to the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.

According to a Globe and Mail report, the helicopter had flown out of St. John’s, and was hit by mechanical problems half-an-hour later above the choppy seas of the North Atlantic. One person was rescued and one fatality confirmed.

Earlier, the pilot decided to turn back, and at 9:18 a.m. local time, as the unspecified problem persisted, the first mayday call went out. The pilot attempted to ditch the Sikorsky S-92 – which also carried a co-pilot and 16 offshore-oil-rig workers – and land it in the water.

Ten minutes later, a search aircraft spotted the helicopter, lying upside down in the frigid Atlantic.

When rescue helicopters arrived another 35 minutes later, the doomed helicopter had sunk beneath the waves.

Two life rafts floated nearby and were empty.

The lone survivor was identified as 30-year-old Robert Decker, was scooped from the water shortly after the crash. He was listed in critical but stable condition last night at a St. John’s hospital.

Decker worked for Provincial Aerospace Ltd., which does ice surveillance for the offshore platforms.

The one man confirmed dead worked for the same company and was on his first trip to the rig. (ANI)

Zimbabwe Prime Minister’s party to probe his wife’s death

Harare (Zimbabwe), Mar. 8 (ANI): Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party has said it will conduct its own investigation in the mysterious death of Tsvangirai’s wife.

The Movement for Democratic Change so far believes that the highway crash that injured Tsvangirai and killed his wife Susan, 50, on Friday was an accident.

But many civic activists and party supporters remain profoundly skeptical that elements in President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party were not somehow involved in the crash, the New York Times reports.

Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister Tendai Biti said a further investigation of the crash was needed and contended that it could have been prevented if the police had provided the prime minister with an escort. Both the party and the police will look into the causes of the crash, he said.

The sport utility vehicle carrying the Tsvangirais was sideswiped by a truck that delivers American-supplied antiretroviral drugs to treat people with AIDS, a senior American official said.

A female passenger in the aid truck said the driver lost control after hitting a rough patch.

“From our initial understanding, it seems the truck hit a pothole, lost control, crossed the center line and sideswiped Morgan’s car, causing it to turn over several times. It looks like it truly was an accident,” the American official said.

Tsvangirai, who has been the target of assassination attempts in the past and fled the country last year out of fear for his life, was sworn in as prime minister in a power-sharing government with Mugabe only last month.

Both parties have been involved in the power struggles since.

Susan, Tsvangirai’s wife of more than 30 years and the mother of their six children, was thrown from their vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, in the crash and died shortly afterward. She will probably be buried Tuesday or Wednesday in Tsvangirai’s rural home in Buhera, a party official said.

People who have spoken with Tsvangirai said he was shattered by the loss of his wife. (ANI)

Now, homework answers available on the net!

London, Mar.6 (ANI): French schoolchildren now have a chance to duck homework for a fee.

The website, faismesdevoirs .com (domyhomework.com), which opened on Wednesday, is the creation of Stéphane Boukris, a 25-year-old business graduate who has announced he plans expanding into the English-language market.

He claimed thousands of French pupils had already subscribed to the site, which has been slammed by politicians and teachers’ unions as an immoral service for well off children.

Xavier Darcos, the French education minister, said: “I consider that the role of state education is to offer everyone a free service, including the correction of homework. I wouldn’t want the income of parents to decide failure or success at school.”

According to The Scotsman, Boukris employs a team of teachers and higher education students who guarantee to deliver within 24 to 72 hours perfectly completed homework, sent to them by secondary school pupils who can pay through their mobile phones.

The website charges according to the complexity of the questions, ranging from between 5 for three maths sums and up to 30 for a full essay.

One hour after it began operating, a huge demand for the website led to its crash. “2,000 visits per second was both a good and bad result,” said Boukris. (ANI)

Women increasingly turning to shapewear to get perfect body

Melbourne, Feb 24 (ANI): Don’t want to go for crash diets or cosmetic surgeries to look slimmer? Well, then here’s the ultimate option for you to get that perfect figure- Shapewear.

Shapewear or body-smoothing underwear has swept over celebrities and body-conscious women alike, and has made a huge 720 million dollars a year in the US alone.

The knickers range by lingerie designer Bruno Schiavi and plastic surgeon and reality TV star Robert Rey, boasted a sale of 1 million dollars in its debut weekend.

Another leading brand is Spanx, which was even featured by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey on her show. Since then most Hollywood stars, including Katherine Heigl, Jessica Alba and Cate Blanchett, are using these knickers.

Other brands on the market include Hollywood Shapes, Nancy Gantz and Bella Bodies.

A woman who uses shapewear has said that wearing a pair of Rey’s high waist step-ins can take her down a dress size, reducing her waist measurement by 7cm.lthough many claim it to be just a modern version of a corset or girdle, Jet International (which distributes Spanx in Australia) sales director Alicia Kawalsky said that technology has made shapewear much safer and easier for women to wear.

“It doesn’t feel restrictive. You don’t have the feeling it’s closing in on you,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She added that there were seven different sizes currently on the Australian market, but a perfect fit is what works for you.

“There is no benefit from buying it in the wrong size,” she said.

Aussie actress Isla Fisher revealed that her weight-loss secret was a pair of tummy-tucking knickers.

Following the shooting of her film ‘Confessions Of A Shopaholic’, Isla said that she owed her on-screen figure to Spanx.

“They’re amazing. They’re like a lycra bodysuit that holds you in. You can not breathe and you can’t go to the toilet but they’re worth it,” she admitted recently.

But wearing the underwear to the point of losing your breath has raised concerns of heath complications.

However, Dr. Cindy Pan has said that one can easily use the underwear to smooth out lumps and bumps as long as the garments are correctly fitted.

“It’s not supposed to transform you from a size 14 to a six. If you use common sense and comfort as a guide, I don’t think that you are going to be doing yourself too much harm. But the main thing is to be realistic about the sizing,” she said. (ANI)

James Bond’s Aston Martin voted Best Screen Car

London, Feb 20 (ANI): James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 has been named the Best Screen Car in a new poll of film fans.

The car that featured in the 1964 blockbuster ‘Goldfinger’ received more than one in four votes, reports the Scotsman.

Ford Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in the 1968 hit ‘Bullitt’ landed the second spot.

Creators of the latest James Bond flick blew two million pounds after smashing 12 new Aston Martins during the filming of ‘Quantum Of Solace’.

The British luxury performance cars, which were donated for the Bond movie for the purpose of advertisements, were used to depict real-life crash scenes for the movie and are now beyond any use – even for spares.

The DBS supercars that were thrown at mountains, riddled with bullets, and even ending up in Lake Garda were destroyed during the filming of ‘Quantum Of Solace’, starring Daniel Craig as the 007 agent. (ANI)

Pussycat girlfriend is Hamilton’s only charisma, says Lauda

London, Feb. 20 (ANI): Former motor racing champion Niki Lauda has said the only interesting thing about Lewis Hamilton is his Pussycat Dolls girlfriend.

The three-times F1 World Champ title winner blasted the British driver, as “boring”, claiming modern drivers have “no idea”.

The 59-year-old, world title winner of 1975, 1977 and 1984, said:

“The only kind of charisma someone like Lewis Hamilton has is his girl Nicole Scherzinger.”

“When I was racing, everyone was ready to drive over someone else to win. Death was always an option. Today’s drivers have no idea,” the Daily Star quoted Lauda, as saying.

However, the Current F1 champ Hamilton himself has admitted that he is “boring” on a night out.

The 24-year-old on course to become Britain’s first sports billionaire said recently: “I’m a boring bar person because if I am out I will only have a Coke or orange juice.”

Lauda, who was fighting for life after a racing crash in 1976, is well known for his criticism about current Formula 1 drivers.

Earlier, Lauda had said that Lewis Hamilton was robbed of victory in the Belgian Grand Prix, and described the penalty as “the worst judgment in the history of F1″.

He had said the sport was close to losing its integrity after Hamilton had been hit with a retrospective 25-second drive-through penalty for ‘cutting a corner and gaining an advantage’.

“So I do not understand this decision, and it’s really bad for the sport because people watching will not watch any more because of this stupid decision,” Lauda said. (ANI)

Mischa Barton’s secret behind tiny waist – Pilates

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): ‘The O.C.’ star Mischa Barton has revealed that Pilates is the secret behind her slim frame.

She said: “For me, it’s all about Pilates recently. I’m obsessed with Pilates. I think it’s so fun.”

The 23-year-old actress had recently sparked concerns for her health after displaying an increasingly thin physique, reports the China Daily.

Mischa hit out at critics of her weight loss, insisting she has never embarked on faddy diets or extreme exercise regimes.

She added to America’s OK! magazine: “I don’t do any crash diets. There’s nothing that I really do like that, because I’m always working. I mean, before I go do a film, I do workout more. I do get ready for a film and try to be healthy and in shape. And when I’m not working, I do less of it.

“I do more cardio because I work long hours. Jogging, running – tuff like that’s really good before you do a film so you have more energy.” (ANI)
