Akola (Maharashtra), Aug. 10(ANI): On the occasion of auspicious Shravan (monsoon) month rituals, thousands of Hindu devotees thronged to Mahadev Temple located in forest area of Satpura mountain range and dedicated to Lord Shiva at Dhargad near Akola district of Maharashtra.
Devotees from all across India came in large numbers to mark the auspicious third Monday of Shravan month as per the regional Marathi calendar.
Though the Mahadev Temple is located in dense jungles, there is no end to the stream of devotees particularly during the Shravan season.
“This shrine is situated in dense forest area and there are animals also. But, due to the blessings of Lord Shiva, no untoward incidents have ever been reported so far. That is why people come here in large numbers every year,” said Suresh Agarwal, a devotee.
The pilgrims approach from several entry points before trekking up the mountainous terrain to reach the cave shrine.
“The idols were placed by an Eklavya (forest tribal) ruler…a war broke out that time and the king was unable to attend the annual prayer ceremony as he was busy in the war…the king was upset then Lord Shiva himself appeared in front of him. So, he founded the temple in this cave,” said Bhushan Gavande, another pilgrim.
Shravan month begins on July 22 and ends on August 20 and it is a common sight during this period to see devotees clad in saffron attires, visiting various shrines amid the chants of ‘Bam bam bhole’, the traditional hymn dedicated to Shiva.
Hindus worship Shravan as one of the holiest months. It is also the first of the four holy months known as the Chatur Mas during which those who have become monks and given up social bondage perform special prayers and rituals. (ANI)

The very pretty Minissha Lamba was recently invited by the Navy to attend their awards ceremony which was held at the Navy Nagar in Colaba. We hear that the actress was fascinated by the men in uniforms! Sources say that Minissha really enjoyed herself, made a lot of friends and was in awe of the heroes of the sea. Apparently this was the first time ever she interacted with the naval force and was completely blown away! The actress has a lot of respect for the officers and was in high spirits throughout the night.
When we asked the actress about her naval experience she said, “Suddenly what we do pales insignificance compared to how the heroes of our nation protect us. I salute their bravery; it’s an absolute honour to be here”. Well, that not all! On being extended an invitation, Minissha also promised to visit the navy ships over the weekend! Aftab Shivdasani and Jackie Shroff too were among the celebrities who were present there.
Well, now that’s what we call a Navy Connection!

aghdad – British Foreign Secretary David Miliband arrived in Basra on Monday leading a delegation of British investors and businessmen to explore investment opportunities in Iraq, the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency reported.
VOI cited Basra media spokesperson Aqeel al-Fereji as saying Miliband was expected to attend the Basra investment conference along with the delegation. Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki had met earlier Monday with British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson.
Al-Maliki told Mandelson that Iraq wants to develop bilateral relations and benefit from British companies in the reconstruction operation, VOI reported.
Al-Maliki is expected to visit Britain, France and Russia during a European tour later this month.
Miliband, whose country withdrew from Basra last week, told al- Maliki and other Iraqi officials during a recent visit that his country’s “support for Basra” would continue through British investors there.
Last month, the Iraqi Oil Drilling Company of the Oil Ministry signed a contract to form an Iraqi-British oil drilling company with a capital of 90 million US dollars.
Britain, main US ally in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, is to withdraw all its troops in July 2009. Some 4,100 British troops are stationed in Iraq, the second largest contingent after US troops.
British forces, at the beginning of January, handed over Basra International Airport, their main base in southern Iraq, to Iraqi authorities. The port city is 590 kilometres south of Baghdad.
On March 31, the British military formally transferred control of its base in Basra to US forces in a military ceremony attended by Iraqi leaders.

Washington – The United States will push for more restrictions on tourism to the North and South Poles to protect the regions’ natural environment, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday.
Opening a nearly two-week summit bringing together the two diplomatic bodies that govern the Arctic and Antarctic, Clinton warned that protecting the region was crucial for reducing global climate change.
“Strengthening environmental regulation is especially important as tourism to Antarctica increases,” Clinton said at an opening ceremony at the State Department in Washington, proposing limits on larger ships and increasing safety and environmental regulations.
The gathering, which brings together scientists and government officials from 47 countries, marks the first US-hosted summit on the environment since President Barack Obama took office in January, and comes as world governments are hoping to reach a new deal to limit global warming by the end of the year.
Clinton said that past agreements on protecting the poles served as a “living example” of governments’ ability to work together on environmental issues, and urged similar cooperation in the lead-up to a Copenhagen summit in December.
“As the world prepares for climate talks in Copenhagen this December, meetings like this are more important than ever,” Clinton said.
The gathering comes on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, which designated the poles a peaceful “natural reserve” that could not be used by any governments for military purposes.

This has been a season which has seen music composer AR Rahman sweeping the music awards at almost every award function that was held in the year. Now a double Oscar winner, as well, there is perhaps little that is left for him to achieve.
But now it seems that he is all set to acquire another feather in his cap, which is that of a doctorate from the Middlesex University. The university is celebrating the tenth year of its regional office in India and wants to confer an honoury doctorate on Rahman. The ceremony is likely to take place in the campus on July. In return, Rahman is trying to work out something by which the students from his music conservatory can receive a bachelors degree from Middlesex, and also spend the final year studying at its London campus.

Kuala Lumpur, April 3 (IANS) Najib Tun Razak, son of a former premier, was sworn in Friday morning as Malaysia’s sixth prime minister.
He took over from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who stepped down after leading the country for over five years. Badawi made way for Razak well before the end of his second term, marking a smooth political transition in the prosperous Southeast Asian nation.
Razak, 55, took his oath of office before Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the royal head of the state.
Dressed in traditional black baju melayu (shirt) complete with sampan (a waist band), Razak was administered the oath of secrecy, loyalty and confidentiality.
The entire ceremony was steeped in Malaysian traditions, Star Onine said.
The swearing in ceremony was witnessed by Badawi and his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad.
Razak was born in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, July 23, 1953. He is the eldest son of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the nation’s second prime minister.
His appointment is significant in the country’s history as this is the first time that a former prime minister’s son is holding the post, Bernama, the official news agency said.
Razak became the country’s youngest member of parliament at the age of 22 when he won the Pekan seat unopposed in a by-election following his father’s death.
He then went from strength to strength in politics and government to reach the pinnacle, being elected president of the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) last week that paved the way to his becoming the prime minister.

The Congress-led central government’s policy on terrorism was ‘deeply flawed’, Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani said here Wednesday while expressing ’shock’ at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement about India and Pakistan jointly fighting terrorism.
‘I am shocked by the statement by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh reiterating his earlier stand that India and Pakistan should jointly fight the menace of terrorism,’ the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate told reporters.
He was responding to Manmohan Singh’s remark Tuesday on the sidelines of the civil investiture ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan. ‘I have always said that India and Pakistan have to face jointly the scourge of terrorism,’ the prime minister had said while expressing his sympathies to Pakistan over the terror attack on a police academy near Lahore.
‘This statement echoes Dr. Singh’s stand adopted after his meeting with the former Pakistani president General Pervez Musharraf in Havana in September 2006 that India and Pakistan should establish a joint anti-terror mechanism,’ Advani, who is here on a two-day campaign tour, said.
‘I had personally questioned the rationale of India joining hands with a country whose government had refused to fulfill its 2004 commitment to dismantle the anti-India terror infrastructure on its territory.’
‘The fact that Pakistan itself has been the victim of home grown terrorist incidents cannot be an argument in favour of an India-Pak joint mechanism to fight terrorism,’ Advani said, describing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s policy on fighting terrorism as ‘deeply flawed’.
Pakistan, he said, had created a Frankenstein that its rulers in Islamabad were unwilling to vanquish because they know it can be used in their proxy war against India.
‘Another proof of the Congress-led UPA government’s flawed policy towards Pakistan was the prime minister’s shocking statement in October 2008 that he wanted to see the border between India and Pakistan become irrelevant.’
‘Our country has paid a heavy price because of the UPA government’s wrong neighbourhood policy, made worse by the Congress party’s policies of minorityism at home,’ the BJP leader added.
Advani, who landed here Tuesday, addressed several poll rallies in western Orissa soon after his arrival and is scheduled to address several meetings on Wednesday as well. This is his first trip to the state after the BJP’s 11-year coalition with Orissa’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) collapsed last month.
Orissa will go to the polls in two phases on April 16 and April 23 to elect 147 members to the state assembly and 21 members to the Lok Sabha. The BJP has announced it will contest all Lok Sabha and assembly seats alone.

Chennai, Mar 26 (ANI): Breaking off its alliance with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on Thursday joined hands with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
PMK’s General Council met here today to take a formal decision on forming an alliance with Jyalalithaa-led AIADMK. The meeting was attended by all senior leaders, including PMK founder S Ramadoss and his son and Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani.
According to sources, while 2,453 members voted for the alliance with the AIADMK, only 117 voted against it.
The PMK decided to shift its loyalty from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) after a recent meeting between Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram and Anbumani Ramadoss failed to clear the differences between the two parties.
The signing ceremony is expected to unfold at Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residencelater in the evening, sources said.
Jayalalithaa has also invited Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko and leaders of Communist Party of India -Marxist (CPI-M) and Communist Party of India (CPI), allies of AIADMK, to join for tea this evening.
The PMK would be contesting elections with AIADMK for the third time. The PMK was in the AIADMK-led front in the 2001 assembly polls, which was won by Jayalalithaa. Both the parties were in the BJP-led front in the 1998 Lok Sabha polls. (ANI)

Chennai, Mar 8 (ANI): Lawyers attached with the Madras High Court on Sunday announced that they would participate in a demonstration outside the court premises on Monday.
The committee has also decided to be absent from the welcome address to new Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale.
However, to “maintain the healthy traditions of the legal fraternity of Tamil Nadu”, the State-level Joint Action Committee of Advocates (JACA) has allowed office-bearers to attend the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
The agitating lawyers have dismissed the interim report of Justice B.N. Srikrishna, named by the Supreme Court to probe the February 19 lawyers-police clash at the Madras High Court.
Committee Chairman R.C. Paul Kanagaraj maintained that the report was “wholly without basis.”
It strongly condemned the “unwarranted comments made against the advocates and judges” in the report and criticised the Tamil Nadu Government for “protecting and shielding the DGP, the Commissioner of Police and other police officers who indulged in the brutal attack on judiciary and lawyers.”
The Supreme Court had on March 6 referred the report of Justice B. N. Srikrishna to the Madras High Court.
The report stated the provocation came from striking advocates, and in retaliation, the police used “excess force and exceeded its limits” by entering the High Court premises and chambers of advocates.
The report said the lawyers behaved like hooligans and miscreants and criticised them for their unruly behaviour.
The report also targeted the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court for his ’soft attitude’ towards striking. (ANI)

London, March 8 (ANI): UK’s political party The Liberal Democrats was left red faced after it used Kate Winslet’s pictures in an advertisement without her consent.
Party leader Nick Clegg, a pal of the actress’ director-husband Sam Mendes, was left guarding his pride after a snap of the Oscar winner was made to appear promoting a Lib Dem awards ceremony.
The picture, apparently showing her at the recent Lib Dem Council Awards in Harrogate, was featured in the party’s conference brochure.
It allegedly offered the belief that Winslet, who has always sealed her political affiliations, was a Lib Dem supporter.
“They did not request permission to use the image and, so far, Kate has not been made aware of its use. I am not aware of her political position,” the Independent quoted her rep as saying.
However, a Lib Dem spokesman insisted: “It was a humorous piece for a fairly low-key event.”
On being questioned if the ad backed the idea of depicting the star as a party supporter, he added: “That is not the idea…. We are more than happy to make it clear that it is not the case.” (ANI)

Vienna, Mar.7 (ANI): Assassinated Pakistan Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto’s son and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman, Bilawal Bhutto has urged the international community not to lose faith in the people of Pakistan who are striving to find their place in the world.
Addressing the Women’s World Award ceremony here, the Bhutto scion admitted that Pakistan was going through a tough time.
Commenting on the current political instability in the country, he said that the present turmoil was a result of year’s long trouble and that the PPP government had inherited the backlog of years of political instability in the region.
Bhutto commended the work done by the Pakistan Government led by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
“Gilani is continuing my mother’s political mission for the alleviation of the sufferings of the masses, to give them hope and to urmount the piled up backlog of the problems left by the past rulers,” The Nation quoted Bhutto, as saying.
He gave away the Benazir Bhutto Tolerance Award to internationally acclaimed Italian actress, Claudia Cardinale. (ANI)

London, Mar 6 (ANI): Brit celebrity Jade Goody’s church christening with her two boys has been put on hold because she is too weak to go through with it.
Goody, 27, whose last dying wish is to be baptised in church with Bobby, five, and Freddie, four, is in hospital heavily sedated after an emergency bowel operation to ease her agony.
“She is far too ill,” the Sun quoted a pal of the ‘Big Brother’ star as saying.
Her spokesman Max Clifford confirmed that it was very difficult for her to even open her eyes.
“If people go and see her it’s literally a case of her opening her eyes, saying, ‘Hi, how are you?’ and going back to sleep again,” he said.
“It’s a result of the medication she’s on. So, of course, in those circumstances the christening can’t go ahead,” he added.
Clifford revealed that there was still a chance that the ceremony could take place in the chapel of London’s Royal Marsden cancer hospital.
“Jade really wants to be well enough to go home and be christened,” he said.
“If she starts to feel better the christening can be organised at very short notice. We’re hoping for the best,” he added.
A church near Goody’s Essex home had been booked for the christening – set to feature in the same celebrity mag that forked out for exclusive rights to her wedding two weeks ago when she tied the knot with freed lag Jack Tweed, 21.
“The christening was not just a cynical attempt to make some money for her boys,” a close friend said.
“Jade genuinely wants to be baptised before she dies. She is still hopeful this can be done. But time is running out for her,” the friend added. (ANI)

Washington, Mar 05 (ANI): Pop star Rihanna has fuelled rumours that she may have tied the knot with Chris Brown, after she refused to rebuff American tabloid reports of a secret wedding.
The ‘Umbrella’ hitmaker, who was allegedly attacked by Chris Brown and left her with horrific injuries, is said to have reunited with him at Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ mansion.
Brown, who is facing criminal charges for the alleged attack, reportedly proposed to Rihanna in Florida, and she accepted his proposal.
The report further says that Brown arranged a whirlwind ceremony on Combs’ Star Island estate, where they were made husband and wife.
“All she’s ever wanted was to be with him forever. Rihanna is looking for the husband-and-two kids deal before she turns 25. She believes in fairytales, and she wants to live hers with Chris. She was totally up front and confessed to him, ‘I can’t live without you,” Contactmusic quoted an insider as saying.
The duo was later spotted again disembarking a jet in L.A., where Brown will face charges relating to the alleged attack.
Even Rihanna’s publicist refused to comment on the report, when World Entertainment News Network approached him.
Meanwhile, Rihanna’s family is not in favour of her reconciliation with Brown, who allegedly left her with a bloody nose, a split lip and bite marks on her hands. (ANI)

Sydney, Mar 5 (ANI): Barack Obama was wearing a stylish bulletproof suit when he took oath as the 44th President of the United States.
Speaking in front of thousands, the new President of the world’s most powerful nation was safer than people realized, according to US media sources.
Miguel Caballero, the famed Bulletproof Tailor of Bogota and the only company in the world to make them, has for years been designing high-end armoured fashion ware for the world’s elite.
The company has been so secretive about its clients that many believe it is an urban legend. But in fact, it exists on an unassuming city street in a low-rise white building in Bogota, Colombia, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Miguel Caballero’s factory has over 100 employees, and a cleverly selected worldwide spokesman in action movie star Steven Seagal.
Caballero manufactures stylish armour plated leather coats, suits, vests, sweaters, and even ties, for a clientele that extends far beyond Colombia’s borders. Eighty per cent of their business comes from overseas orders.
With a clientele that includes several world leaders and the wealthy elite, a company located in the kidnapping capital of the world is expected to take no chances.
The secret lies in a heavy armour plated panel inserted into the clothing, protecting the vital areas of the upper body while simultaneously blending into the garment’s loose-cut design.
The company claims to be the world’s only certified armour-plate manufacturer to incorporate industry standard protection with stylish design – attractive to those who want to be protected, without advertising to others that there is any need to be. The key of bulletproof garments is to save lives, not prevent injury.
While the panels will stop a bullet, and in some cases even a direct knife attack, the intended victim is still going to feel the impact. (ANI)
