The following is a snapshot of recent developments in India’s general election campaign. (The sources are mentioned in brackets)
* Mayawati, chief of the caste-based Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and a prime ministerial aspirant, has promised to have job quotas for all poor sections of society cutting across caste and religious lines (The Times of India).
She told an election rally that jobs, including in the judiciary, would be reserved for even poor upper castes, Muslims and Christians. Under present laws, affirmative government action such as reserved jobs and college seats is aimed only at lower caste Hindus, tribes and other backward classes.
* The Samajwadi Party, which is strong in Uttar Pradesh, has begun talks with a new political outfit in Andhra Pradesh floated by a popular film star (all newspapers). Media reports said the Samajwadi Party was trying to stitch together a loose alliance which could leverage a post-election deal with any formation that emerges as the front-runner to form a government.
* Sonia Gandhi, the chief of the ruling Congress party and one of the most powerful politicians in India, does not own a car or a house (all newspapers). She declared assets worth only $274,000 while filing her nomination papers to contest the Rae Bareli seat. She lives in a sprawling government bungalow in the heart of New Delhi.

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): A famous baby brand has reached out to Nadya Suleman, the California woman who made history after giving birth to octuplets on January 26, to donate clothing for all 14 of her children.
“We understand the financial strain one child can put on a family, let alone 14 little ones, so we would like to do our part and donate clothing from our line,” Custom Kingdom said in a letter released exclusively to Usmagazine.com.
The company will “provide at least 500 dollars in clothing each month, for one year.”
The brand has offered to send its own favorite designs each month, or let Suleman’s kids select. And if the family is still struggling with finances after a year, the company has agreed to continue sending clothes.
Earlier this week, Suleman’s mom, Angela, told The Insider that she’d “opt” for adoption if her daughter couldn’t pay for the kids.
Angela’s southern California bungalow is currently in foreclosure. (ANI)

Washington, Feb 24 (ANI): Nadya Suleman, the mother of the recently born octuplets, could be thrown out of her home in California within two weeks, say reports.
Sources close to Suleman have revealed that the Whittier property will be auctioned on March 5.
Suleman’s mother Angela, the actual owner of the house, is said to have not paid the bungalow’s mortgage for 10 months.
A source revealed that Angela owed over 23,000 dollars in back payments, Us magazine reported.
The source further said that Suleman and her brood of 14 kids had not decided on a new house as yet.
Meanwhile, the source said that Suleman actually made up the dad’s name-David Solomon-on her children’s birth certificates.
The source further clarified that the father of the octuplets was “definitely not” Dennis Beaudoin, the man went on Good Morning America Monday claiming he was the donor in question.
Even Suleman confirmed that Beaudoin was not the father of any of her children, despite having donated sperm for her in vitro fertilization. (ANI)
