Washington, August 17 (ANI): Health experts in India will begin clinical trials to determine the efficacy of the first dry powder inhalable vaccine for measles next year, according to a report.
Presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington on Sunday, the report points out that measles sickens millions of infants and children, and kills almost 200,000 annually in India.
Dr. Robert Sievers, who leads the team that developed the dry-powder vaccine, said that it was a perfect fit for use in back-roads areas of developing countries, which often lack the electricity for refrigeration, clean water, and sterile needles needed to administer traditional liquid vaccines.
“Childhood vaccines that can be inhaled and delivered directly to mucosal surfaces have the potential to offer significant advantages over injection. Not only might they reduce the risk of infection from HIV, hepatitis, and other serious diseases due to unsterilized needles, they may prove more effective against disease,” he said.
“Many serious infections, such as the measles virus, can enter the body through inhalation. Measles vaccine dry powders have the potential to effectively vaccinate infants, children and adults by inhalation, avoiding the problems associated with liquid vaccines delivered by injection,” he added.
Sievers, of the University of Colorado, Boulder, has revealed that he took inspiration for the new vaccine from research on how people inhale tiny airborne droplets of air pollutants.
To create an inhalable vaccine, he and his colleagues a patented process known as the Carbon Dioxide-Assisted Nebulization with a Bubble Dryer (CAN-BD).
The researcher said that the weakened measles virus is mixed with “supercritical” carbon dioxide – part gas, part liquid – to produce microscopic bubbles and droplets, which then are dried to make an inhalable powder.
The powder is puffed into a small, cylindrical, plastic sack, with an opening like the neck of a plastic water bottle, and administered.
“By taking one deep breath from the sack, a child could be effectively vaccinated,” Sievers said.
He says that, in animal tests, the inhaler has been found to be just as effective in delivering measles vaccine as the traditional injection.
The researchers are now working on an inexpensive dry powder inhaler that would deliver measles or influenza vaccines to developing nations, and could be used elsewhere.
They believe that the new method may also do away with the problem of people refusing inoculations because of their fear of needles.
Sievers says if the inhaler passes final safety and effectiveness tests, the Serum Institute of India Ltd. expects a demand growing to 400 million doses of measles vaccine a year.
“Human clinical trials are expected to begin next year in India, after animal safety studies are completed this year.
About two-thirds of the world’s deaths due to measles occur in that nation. Worldwide, several hundred people die every day from measles-related disease,” he said. (ANI)

Melbourne, Mar 8 (ANI): Australian all rounder Andrew Symonds has told how reconciling with girlfriend Katie Johnson has helped him battle depression and given him a new lease on life.
The troubled star of Australian cricket star has also revealed his battle with the bottle, and how he considered quitting cricket besides the deep bouts of depression that left him reeling.
Symonds will get a new look for his new life this month, allowing his signature dreadlocks to be cut for leukaemia charity World’s Greatest Shave, The Herald Sun reports.
Symonds and Johnson were one of the glamour couples of the Australian cricket team before the exiled all-rounder requested time and space to confront his depression.
But they have again become close after Symonds underwent routine counselling sessions with a leading sports psychologist.
Those around the cricketer have described the move as positive.
“Being old fashioned and all that sort of thing, when I first went into counselling I didn’t think it was going to be for me, but I’ve completely changed my mind about that whole profession,” Symonds said.
On the cricket pitch, Symonds remains committed to forcing his way back into the Australian team for the Ashes Tour of England in August.
“There were days when I was drinking too much and binge drinking, using it as an out or as an excuse if I’d had a bad day or something hadn’t gone right. The answer for me is controlling it and knowing when to have a beer and what’s appropriate. And I believe I’ve done that well now,” he said. (ANI)

London, Mar 5 (ANI): A miracle cream which claims to destroy cellulite in nine minutes will go on sale in the UK this week.
The serum, which is worth 68 dollars, is made from plant stem cells.
According to the makers of Adonia LegTone, the plant extracts help tone up weak skin stem cells.
They are said to be the main cause for cellulite, reports The Sun.
The serum has been hailed as a ‘major breakthrough’ in America where it is dubbed ‘the nine minute butt-lift’.
As per clinical tests carried out in independent American laboratories found the cream reduced cellulite by as much as 47 per cent in nine minutes and around 70 per cent over a six-week period.
Dr Mark Binette, of maker Greek Island Labs, said: “A healthy diet, lashings of water and a regular exercise regime will help keep cellulite levels down – but sometimes a girl just needs a little extra help. The secret has been captured in a bottle.”
One of the main causes of cellulite is when skin stem cells become weak and dormant. (ANI)

London, March 3 (ANI): Scientists have found a discarded bottle at a waste site in the US that contains the oldest sample of bomb-grade plutonium made in a nuclear reactor, dating back to 1944.
According to a report by BBC News, the sample dates to 1944 and is a relic from the infancy of the US nuclear weapons programme.
A team from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory used nuclear forensic techniques to date the sample and track down its origins.
The type of plutonium in the bottle – known as Pu-239 – is a so-called alpha emitter. These alpha particles are too bulky to penetrate skin or paper, but they can cause poisoning if swallowed or inhaled.
It has a half-life (the time it takes for half the radioactive nuclei in a sample to decay) of 24,110 years.
The bottle in question was discovered in a burial trench at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state, north-western US.
Established as part of the Manhattan Project in 1943, Hanford was home to the world’s first full-scale plutonium production facility.
The Manhattan Project was the US’ bid to build the world’s first nuclear weapon during World War II. The project’s roots lay in fears that Nazi Germany was investigating similar technology.
The Hanford site is now the focus of a massive environmental cleanup effort due to high levels of radioactive waste that remain at the site.
While excavating a burial trench in December 2004, clean-up personnel discovered a safe which contained a jug filled with whitish liquid slurry.
Further tests revealed the bottle contained a type of plutonium made by re-processing spent fuel in a manner consistent with early operations at Hanford.
Realising the historic potential of the find, Jon Schwantes and colleagues from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory carried out further tests on the sample.
In order to determine its age, the researchers analysed the different forms, or isotopes, of plutonium and uranium in the sample.
They found it had been separated from the spent fuel in 1944.
In order to determine which reactor had produced the sample, they compared plutonium isotope ratios from the contents of the bottle against technical data from nuclear research reactors that were operating at the time the sample was made.
Their results strongly suggested the plutonium was manufactured at the prototype X-10 reactor at Oak Ridge in Tennessee, which began operating in 1943, a year after the Manhattan Project was authorised. (ANI)

London, Feb.25 (ANI): A disappointed Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has warned Inter-Milan’s Jose Mourinho that his team will deliver the knock out punch when the latter undertakes a return visit to Old Trafford.
Fergie said: “Obviously I’m disappointed we’ve not won here (in Rome) but the second leg is at Old Trafford where we have a great record. We must have a good chance of going through. The game’s not finished, obviously, but we are capable of winning it.”
United made it a record 20 Champions League matches unbeaten, although Fergie sprung a surprise by starting with Wayne Rooney on the bench.
Jonny Evans played despite an ankle injury but Ferguson revealed he had made plans to cover for the defender’s absence.
The Sun quoted him as saying: “I felt we would have a weakness in our aerial defending set-piece plays without Jonny and I had to have Dimitar Berbatov in.
Mourinho failed to shake hands with Fergie at the end.
But the former Chelsea boss explained: “My dugout has a door that gives me a chance to leave immediately.
“Yesterday I left Sir Alex a bottle of wine at his hotel with a card to say we will see each other at Old Trafford after the game. I am always friends with him.” (ANI)

London, Feb 19 (ANI): Monks in northeast Thailand have built a temple out of one million recycled beer bottles, using them for its walls and roof.
The temple called Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, which is also known as Wat Lan Kuad or ‘the Temple of a Million Bottles’, is in Sisaket province near the Cambodian border, 400 miles from the capital Bangkok.
Collection of the bottles by the Buddhist monks had begun in 1984, and after they amassed a huge number, they decided to use them as building material.
The monks have created a complex of around 20 buildings using the beer bottles, and they are encouraging the local authorities to send them more.
“The more bottles we get, the more buildings we make,” the Telegraph quoted Abbot San Kataboonyo as saying.
The complex comprises of the main temple over a lake, crematorium, prayer rooms, a hall, water tower, tourist bathrooms and several small bungalows raised off the ground, and which serve as the monks’ quarters.
As per the monks, the bottles, which are a mixture of green Heineken bottles and brown Thai beer Chang, do not lose their colour, provide good lighting and are easy to clean.
The building has a concrete core to strengthen it and the eco-friendly monks have created mosaics of Buddha using the recycled beer bottle caps.
The temple has been constructed out of 1.5 million recycled bottles, and the monks intend to use reuse more for the building, which is now on an approved list of eco-friendly sightseeing tours in southeast Asia. (ANI)

Washington, January 28 (ANI): Brad Pitt was reportedly left red-faced after he was asked to hand over his beer bottle as he was getting into a car.
The ‘Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ star was recently spotted attending a Grey Goose SAG after-party with partner Angelina Jolie.
According to a Pop Tarts eyewitness, the actor did not realise he was carrying the beer as he headed towards his vehicle, reports Fox News.
And just as he was seen tiptoeing off the back door, organisers requested Pitt to lay down the bottle, to which the embarrassed celebrity obliged.
Pitt was later spotted being driven away from the star-studded evening, which also saw other guests such as Katie Holmes and Sean Penn. (ANI)

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): Want to get lucky? Well, then start staying close to winners, for a new study has revealed that being near a person on a winning streak could somehow enhance you own chances of winning.
The study has shed light on why, at a casino, people seem to gather around machines and people on a winning streak.
“It is common to find that people consider luck to be contagious-they are likely to believe that being near a person on a winning streak somehow enhances their own chances of winning,” said author Arul Mishra (University of Utah, Salt Lake City).
His study focused on testing whether consumers would make product choices based on the same contagion principle.
Participants in one of his studies were asked to choose a Pepsi bottle from one of two groups.
In one group the bottles were close together and in the other they had been arranged apart.
When the consumers were told that one of the bottles in each group contained a gift coupon, the majority of subjects chose a bottle from the close-together group.
However, when participants were told that one of the bottles in each group was defective, they were more likely to choose from the group with the bottles arranged apart.
Mishra said that the research showed that “the age-old belief that qualities are contagious and transferable is quite pervasive in simple everyday decisions.”
He determined that a group that is considered contagious appears to spread the qualities of one of its members to the complete group.
So, for gain, the contagious (close) group appears more attractive since the whole group seems to reflect the positive quality.
However, for loss, a non-contagious group appears more attractive since in such a group the loss quality appears to spread less.
“Despite the fact that the qualities (a gift coupon or a product defect) cannot physically spread from one object to the other, people still believe in the contagiousness of qualities based on their grouping,” said Mishra.
The research has implications for product choice, persuasiveness of advertising messages, and retail shelf displays.
The new study is published in the Journal of Consumer Research. (ANI)

London, Jan 23 (ANI): Britons who are used to enjoying evenings at home with a bottle of wine should now thing twice before taking that extra sip of alcohol, for a Government survey has claimed that such regular drinking is putting the lives of over 7 million middle-class drinkers at risk.
The new General Household Survey is a poll of the adults in almost 13,000 homes, and is conducted by the Office for National Statistics.
And the survey has claimed that middle aged, professional Britons have a higher tendency to exceed recommended daily levels of alcohol consumption than the working-classes, with twice as many drinking every night of the week.
But, keeping in mind the increasing strength of alcoholic drinks and the trend for larger measures, the government has put in place new measurements to calculate the intake of alcohol.
Thus, one large glass of wine now counts as three units, a medium glass as two and a small glass as one-and-a-half.
Men are advised to consume no more than three or four units in any one day, while women are told not to have more than two or three.
However, the survey revealed that 37 per cent of adults regularly exceed this benchmark.
According to the researchers, many middle class drinkers insist they know what the safe level of alcohol consumption is, which means that they do not believe they are drinking too much
The study also claimed that middle class drinkers are more likely to indulge in “heavy” drinking, which means drinking double the recommended daily limit on a given evening.
In the survey, almost one in four middle-class drinkers admitted to drinking to this level at least once a week, which equates to a man having three pints of strong lager or a woman drinking two large glasses of wine.
However, many middle class professionals are unlikely to regard half a bottle of wine a night as heavy drinking.
“These statistics lift the lid on the very serious scale of middle-class alcohol consumption, and the potential health risks that this involves,” The Telegraph quoted Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrats’ spokesman on health, as saying.
He added: “While attention has rightly been on the massive problem of young people binge-drinking, a hidden epidemic among the middle classes has gone unnoticed. The Government has continued to massively under-fund alcohol treatment services, meaning this problem has been allowed to continue unabated.” (ANI)

Washington, Jan 22 (ANI): Besides curves, what do Leona Lewis, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham have in common? Well, the answer is: a signature scent.
The ‘Better In Time’ hitmaker is working in partnership with German beauty brand LR to develop her trademark fragrance.
Leona’s representative told People.com that she is involved in every aspect of manufacturing the fragrance, from choosing the scent’s notes to working on the design of the bottle and packaging.
Although the fragrance is slated to launch in Europe and Asia in the summer of 2009, its not yet confirmed whether it would make it across the Atlantic or not.
Meanwhile Leona was also in news, as PETA named her ‘Person Of The Year’.(ANI)

London, Jan.20 (ANI): Playboy Calum Best is desperate to rescue troubled former England footballer Paul Gascoigne from his addiction to booze.
According to the Daily Express, he wants to repay Gazza who gave him support when his father, footie legend George Best, died after a long battle with alcohol.
“He is such a good guy and all he is doing is escaping by getting on the bottle,” said Calum, 27.
“I would just ask him to please get in touch. But you look at what he is doing and think ‘Wow – I have been through that one and I know the sad ending and I just hope it doesn’t end that way’.” (ANI)

London, January 20 (ANI): Prince Harry has apparently left the ‘Paki’ row behind to get back to chasing his dreams of becoming a pilot of the meanest attack machine in the British Army.
The soldier prince, who has been accused of racism after calling a fellow Asian cadet “our little Paki friend” in a three year old home video, set his foot at the Army Air Corps HQ Hampshire to begin his training.
The 24-year-old, who is allegedly keen on making a comeback on the frontline after having being pulled out from the Afghan War, will undergo a rigorous 18-month-programme that will test his aptitude to handle the 45 million pound Apache.
The party-loving royal will also be required to follow the Army’s strict rules for the learner pilots that include staying away from the bottle for months at a time.
“There is a huge amount of info for Harry to take in,” the Sun quoted a source at the Army Air Corps base in Middle Wallop as saying. (ANI)
