Aeren-R IMAX will be the only screens to showcase HARRY POTTER’s forthcoming release in 3D this June, said director of IMAX, Jim Patterson, here.
“IMAX is going to be the only theatre to release HARRY POTTER and the HALF-BLOOD PRINCE in 3D this June simultaneously with the 2D versions. Viewers will also be able to enjoy TRANSFORMERS 2, THE NEXT MUMMIES and SHREK in 3D at our halls,” Patterson told us at the premiere of a full-length 3D film in Kolkata.
Patterson said IMAX would also be showcasing short full-length 3D films now onwards.
“Generally, all 2D prints are converted and shown as 3Ds. But today, for the first time in India, a full-length digital film-FLY ME TO THE MOON- was shown and that too at IMAX in Kolkata.”
The director further said other short 3D films like SEA MONSTERS by National Geographic, WILD OCEAN AND MONSTERS v/s ALIENS by Dreamworks would be shown at IMAX shortly.
Asked if Bollywood films too will be shown in 3D at IMAX, Patterson said they have the technology but lack economics.
“IMAX already has the technology- Digitally Mastered Release (DMR)-to convert any film. In fact, converting to 3D is cheaper in India than America. But still, we need to become financially stronger to take up almost every film and convert them.
“For this, we need to grow to at least 10-12 theaters across India. Already we have six screens in the country and there are plans to open three more by the end of this year. And if, this growth rate remains consistent, then, hopefully we will be able to convert even Bollywood films to 3D,” Patterson said.

Jimmy’s Punjabi foray has turned out to be quite fruitful for him. His TERA MERA KI RISHTA, touted to be the costliest Punjabi film ever made, has been carrying such positive buzz around it that it has destroyed all competition that was supposed to arrive this Friday. There were seven other Punjabi films in the pipeline but each of them has been moved at a later day to allow TERA MERA KI RISHTA a free run at the box office.
Says a source attached to the film which is being presented by EROS, “Everyone from producer to distributors and exhibitors is quite confident about the prospects of the film. Moreover, even though the film is in Punjabi, the dialogues have been kept simple enough to allow even non-Punjabis to understand what is being said.”
When questioned about the competition in the form of seven other films being sidelined to make way for TERA MERA KI RISHTA, this is what Jimmy had to say – “We are talking about a quality product here, something which is going to erase boundaries and do well nationally as well as internationally. People make a film for say Rs. 20 and audience pays Rs. 100 to watch it. In case of this film, it’s different. We have made a film which looks like Rs. 300 worth even though you would still be spending only Rs. 100. We are talking about such high standards of film making here.”
With BBC touting TERA MERA KI RISHTA to be the biggest Vaisakhi release and Jimmy along with the other cast and crew members of the film going all out to promote it across the globe, it would be interesting to see if a Punjabi film manages to bring in great results at the box office, something that Bollywood films haven’t been able to do this entire year so far.

Aishwarya Rai has done it, Frieda Pinto is doing it, and now Payal Rohatgi is set to become the latest Indian export to Hollywood. The former Big Boss contestant’s route from B-grade flicks to mainstream success has not been easy.
“I did not have anybody to guide me on what kind of films I should look at, and I goofed up in that big time,” says Payal. “The journey for me was very difficult but I worked on myself to be stronger as an actor and rejected many movies.”
This included turning down Yash Raj Productions offer of a part in TASHAN. Payal explains, “The role was not the kind I was willing to do, but I would definitely like to work with them in the future- and I know I will.”
The 36 CHINA TOWN and CORPORATE star recently wowed the crowd when she made a presence at this year’s Filmfare Awards. The actor, whose latest release DIL KABADDI saw her paired opposite Irrfan Khan, is buoyant about her career at home and abroad.
Hoping to follow her co-star’s overseas success, Payal says, “SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE has been a great achievement,” adding, “It has opened the doors of Hollywood for Indian cinema.” She reveals, “My fans will see me in a lot of different roles which I will start working on soon. New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) Music buffs still remember Kumar Sanu for his soulful renditions in hit film ‘Aashiqui’, but the singer says he now stays away from the Bollywood music scene because songs today are nothing but ’shouting’.
‘I’m lucky that I am not singing the kind of songs that are being made today. These songs are just mere shouting. I’m known for singing calm, soothing numbers and I want to keep doing that,’ Sanu, who was honoured with the Padma Shri award this year, told IANS.
‘It’s not that I don’t get offers. I’ve been offered various songs in Bollywood films, but I refused. When I’ll be offered a nice, meaningful song, I’ll sing it,’ the 51-year-old singer said.
Sanu, who won the Filmfare best male playback award for five consecutive years, got his first break in Hindi films with the 1987 film ‘Aandhiyan’.
He has worked with almost all renowned music composers in the industry – from R.D. Burman to Jatin-Lalit – and sung hits like ‘Mera dil bhi’ (‘Saajan’), ‘Sochenge tumhe pyar’ (‘Deewana’), ‘Ye kaali kaali ankhein’ (‘Baazigar’), ‘Ek ladki ko dekha toh’ (‘1942: A Love Story’) and ‘Do dil’ (‘Pardes’) among others.
Sanu says getting the Padma Shri this year was an honour and a responsibility.
‘I want to thank the government for bestowing such a big honour on me. It has come after 22 years, but at least they thought that I deserve it. I’m extremely happy and I know that it is a big responsibility. I’ll do more and better work now,’ said Sanu.
The singer also recently received an award from the Sur Aradhna Socio-Cultural society in the capital.
After judging reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa – Vishwa Sera’ on Zee Bangla and viewing scores of others, Sanu says such shows are nothing but a way for channels to mint money.
‘Reality shows are nothing but games. It’s a good way of minting money by the channels. Public voting is a wrong way of selecting the best singer in such shows. You cannot always trust the public that whatever they choose is the best. Judges should be given this power. Otherwise what are they there for?’ Sanu asked.
He, however, admits that it is much easier for aspiring singers to get a chance to sing in films now.
‘It’s very easy today to get into the industry and get a song or two to sing. Today youngsters have various platforms which help them in getting recognition.
‘When we wanted to be a singer, it was very tough for us to break in. People were too used to listening to Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi. Replacing such legends was not even conceivable, but to be able to get a song with them being there was also not easy,’ said Sanu, who had broken a Guinness World Record by singing 28 songs in a single day in 1993.
Currently concentrating more on regional languages including Bengali, Bhojpuri and Tamil, Sanu will be heard in his home production ‘Yeh Sunday Kyon Aata Hai?’ and also a few untitled projects.

Amritsar, Feb.5 (ANI): Amritsar recently hosted the second Punjabi Film festival which was attended by eminent Punjabi artists who used this opportunity to promote Punjabi films.
An idea conceived a year ago by prominent film lover Navtej Sandhu, it has now evolved into a major platform to encourage Punjabi films.
The second edition of the festival showcased this fact and much more when it was organized under the aegis of Sur-Saanjh Productions promoted by a group of Punjabi film fans here recently.
Their aim was to promote the Punjabi language and culture through films that have received good reviews in India and abroad.
“Punjabi film, be it a small budget or a big budget film, I personally feel that Punjabi should be promoted. My success in winning the `Miss World Punjaban’ title is because of my love for the culture, language and Punjabi costumes,” said Japji Khara, a Punjabi actress.
“There is no Hindi film without Punjabi flavour. Interestingly, Bollywood films are placing Punjabi songs and using Punjabi characters with a traditional touch. A recent hit is `Singh is Kinng’. But Punjabi films are not so successful,” opined Mohan Bhakdi, a Punjabi film producer and director.
Punjabi film industry is witnessing a tremendous change for quite some time. Since Punjabi film producers today know that they have a large non-resident Indian (NRIs) audience and a global market for Punjabi movies, there is a trend for high-budget films.
Films like ‘Dil Apna Punjabi’, ‘Mera Pind – My Home’ and ‘Lakh Pardesi Hoiya’ were among the recent hits.
Punjabi film industry got global recognition when Waris Shah – Ishq Daa Waris was nominated for the 79th Academy Awards.
It was felt that the hard work and determination of Punjabi artists has been rewarded.
“The legendary singers like Gurdas Maan, Harbhajan Maan, Wadali brothers and Lakhwinder Wadali have made a great contribution to the promotion of Punjabi. They are also popular overseas, which has also had a great impact on Punjabi films. We have become veterans now, but the new generation of artists is really good,” said Punjabi actor Guggu Gill.
“As far as Punjabi films are concerned, even though it a small industry, but it has made a great contribution in popularizing Punjabis worldwide. Be it a singer or actor, they have achieved success. In Bollywood, Punjabis artists have done tremendous work – Mohammad Rafi, Sukhwinder Singh, Dharmendra and Dara Singh, who are from Punjab and were on the top in Mumbai. The day is not far when Punjabi film industry will reach the level of Bollywood,” said Punjabi singer and actor, Lakhwinder Wadali.

Hyderabad, Jan 22 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh based game developer launched a 3D game based on a recent Bollywood film ‘Ghajini’.
FX Labs Studios of Hyderabad has entered into a partnership with Eros International Plc, an international distributor of Bollywood films.
They have launched India’s first 3D action game that would be distributed and marketed in the international markets as well.
“Every where in the world, games are very popular but in India there are no Indian games so we wanted to bring Indian games to the audiences here and we built India’s first 3D game. So, this is based on one of the big Bollywood hits and did a game based on the top hero in India,” said Sashi Reddy, Founder and Chairman, FX labs.
Those who have played the game said that it is a dream come true to play a game based on their favourite actor, Aamir Khan. Players are happy that a game has been made on ‘Ghajini’ that has emerged as one of the highest grosser of the year 2008.
“I have played lots of international games but this is the first time I got to play a game made in India. I have always admired Aamir khan and getting to play a game itself is a dream come true. The game does meet upto international standards and it is a very good game to play compared to Indian standards it is a benchmark for Indian gaming,” said Pawan Ratnakar, a player.
Market watchers say that India’s nascent 30-million dollars gaming industry is set to grow to more than 700 million dollars in the next five years, driven by global companies pushing new generation gaming consoles in the Indian market. (ANI)
