Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Iran’s controversial new Defence Minister Ahmad Vahid has warned Israel not to attack the country’s nuclear facilities.
“Every move from the Zionist entity against Iran will be met with a harsh and powerful response from Iran,” The Jerusalem Post quoted him, Vahidi saying.
Vahidi also said that the overwhelming support he had garnered in the parliamentary vote on his appointment “attested to the anti-Zionist spirit of the Iranian parliament and people.”
Vahidi is a wanted by Interpol for masterminding the Buenos Aires Jewish centre bomb blast in 1994 that claimed 85 lives.
Buenos Aires has called General Vahidi’s inclusion in Ahmadinejad’s new Cabinet “an affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack”.
US President Barack Obama has termed Vahidi’s inclusion in the Cabinet as “disturbing”.
Vahidi gained support earlier this week when lawmakers said they would not bow to foreign pressures to reject him.
The chairman of the Iranian foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said the allegations “will not have any negative impact on the assessment” of General Vahidi’s suitability for the job.
“Rather, it may increase his vote,” he noted.
Ahmadinejad has faced questions about the experience and expertise of some of the choices for his 21-seat cabinet. But on Thursday, he managed to win approval for many key posts that included the foreign, interior, intelligence ministries and Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister.
The parliament also backed Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, making her the Islamic republic’s first female minister since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. (ANI)

Bangalore, Sep 4 (ANI): Four more swine flu deaths were reported in Karnataka on Friday, taking the H1N1 virus toll to 35 in the state.
According to sources, all the four deaths occurred Bangalore.
Though, the deaths happened between Sunday and Wednesday, the results of the swab tests arrived only on Friday.
The State Health Department is taking steps to contain the spread of swine flu. Recently a special swine flu training programme for doctors of private hospitals was held in here.
State Health and Family Welfare Director, Usha Wasunkar said: “The programme organised by state government was intended at making swine flu treatment more effective.”
Meanwhile, 19 more people have tested positive for H1N1 virus, taking the number of confirmed cases in the state to 536. All 19 cases were reported in Bangalore. (ANI)

Koratpur (Orissa), Sep 4 (ANI): Four tribesmen died in Koraput district of Orissa after they were forced to eat a soup made of mango kernel recently.
Preliminary medical reports said the soup was bacteria-infected and the tribals, who belong to Narayanpatna block, died of food poisoning.
“My wife and two of my grand daughters died. They consumed mango kernel and wild leaves, as we didn’t have anything else to eat. Most of the times we consume this because we do not have rice at our homes,” said Balsi Suika, relative of the dead.
However, Surya Narayan Patra, the state revenue minister said that the tribals were provided with rice, but they often keep it for a number of days, leading to food poisoning.
“The habit of tribals is to keep cooked rice for four to five days which actually gets spoilt. In recent cases the reports from doctors confirm that they kept the food for a longer period of time. We have directed the extension officer and the collector to propagate them about it in those areas,” said Patra. (ANI)

Aurangabad, Sep 4 (ANI): Sales of dates picks up in Aurangabad during the holy month of Ramadan, as Muslims break their ‘Roza’, with this fruit.
Markets are flooded with different varieties of dates, imported from countries like Muscat, Oman, Iran, Iraq.
The prices of dates range from rupees 40 to 1,600 but that does not prevent the people from purchasing the fruit.
“Dates are imported from Iraq, Iran, Oman, Muscat, Dubai and are sold in the market for prices ranging from rupees 40 to 1,600. Dates are very beneficial. They help in increasing the hemoglobin level in the body. During Ramadan, people break Roza by eating dates,” said Rupali Dosi, a Shopkeeper.
Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims must abstain from all eatables including water from dawn to dusk — a discipline believed to better their souls. (ANI)

Berlin, September 4 (ANI): In a new research work, a team of scientists has shown how optical atomic clocks in the future might become more compact and even portable, maybe even travel to space.
The research was done by scientists from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany.
Optical clocks like the strontium clock in the PTB could be the atomic clocks of the future; some of them though are already ten times more precise and stable than the best primary caesium atomic clocks.
Nowm they might also become more compact and even portable, maybe in the future even travel to space.
PTB scientists have shown how some fundamental difficulties, which a more simple set-up had previously hindered, could be avoided.
They already have a practical application in mind: the clock could help to determine geographical heights even more exactly than before.
An optical clock is so exact because its “pendulum” swings so quickly.
The “pendulum” of a caesium atomic clock swings even more quickly: that is, that microwave radiation which can bring about a spin change in each electron of a caesium atom.
Precisely the microwave frequency at which this effect is largest defines the second. An optical atomic clock works with the still higher frequency of optical radiation – that is with an even faster pendulum.
As the movement of the atoms leads to very large frequency shifts through the Doppler effect, in the best of these clocks, the atoms are slowed down to a hundredth of the speed of a pedestrian in a first preparation step with the aid of laser cooling.

In a lattice clock, a further step then follows in which the atoms are held in potential wells.
These are created through the intensive light field of a laser. Several tens of thousands of strontium atoms are trapped in this so-called optical lattice.
The results of the investigation have shown how the optical lattice has to be dimensioned and how many atoms may be stored in it to operate a very accurate lattice clock also with strontium-88.
A clock is now being built on this basis that is more compact and more transportable than the previous lattice clocks. (ANI)

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Nicotine replacement therapy at least four weeks before surgery can almost halve the risk of poor wound healing in smokers, suggest researchers.
“It is not easy to quit smoking just before an operation,” said Professor Peter Sawicki, the Institute’s Director.
“But people who smoke are more likely to have complications after surgery than people who do not smoke,” he added.
Experts from German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) have revealed that nicotine replacement therapy can help people quit smoking and avoid complications after surgery.
It helps reduce withdrawal symptoms when people stop smoking by giving them nicotine through a patch or chewing gum.
The study has shown that only 14 percent of the patients who smoked had problems with wound healing if they had nicotine replacement therapy at least four weeks before surgery, compared to 28 percent of the patients who did not have nicotine replacement therapy.
“Anaesthetics and surgery put a strain on the body’s oxygen supply as it is,” said Professor Sawicki.
“Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that is available in the blood even more, making it more difficult for wounds to heal – a process which requires oxygen,” he added.

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): People who are poor at saving money are likely to have impulsive behaviour such as overeating, smoking and infidelity, according to a new study.
The study conducted through the BBC website measured people’s financial impulsivity by asking whether they would they prefer to receive 45 pounds in three days or 70 pounds in three months.
The findings revealed that nearly half of those who preferred the smaller-sooner sum of money were more likely to show a raft of other impulsive behaviours.
“One of the big questions about people’s financial planning is whether decisions to spend or save come from personal knowledge and experience of money matters or whether they reflect someone’s personality more generally,” said Dr Stian Reimers, ESRC Centre for Economic Learning and Social Evolution at UCL.
“Our research shows that people with an impulsive money-today attitude ignore the future in other ways.
“For example, they are more likely to smoke and more likely to be overweight, which may reflect a preference for immediate pleasure of nicotine and food over long-term good health,” Reimers added.
Moreover, people who chose to take the smaller-sooner amount of money were also more likely to admit to having had an affair in recent years.
The study also showed that those most likely to make impulsive financial choices were young, poorly educated, and on lower incomes.
“Learning to make decisions that lead to long-term happiness, not just instantaneous gratification, could benefit us all. Simple techniques can help reduce impulsivity: like imagining how you’d feel about your decision in a year’s time, or trying to avoid making decisions in the heat of the moment,” Reimers added.
The study appears in journal Personality and Individual Differences. (ANI)

Mumbai, Sep.4 (ANI): A major tragedy was avoided at Mumbai Airport on Friday morning when an emergency was declared after one of the engines of an Air India flight caught fire while getting ready to taxi off the runway.
Reports said the flight, which was bound for Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, was immediately grounded when a passenger detected sparks flying out of one of the engines.
The 213 passengers onboard were evacuated by slides to safety. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot, as also other equipment and personnel.
Officials of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation are investigating the causes for what would have been a huge tragedy.(ANI)

New Delhi/Islamabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Union Home Minister P. Chidamabaram has told a private television channel that he may not respond to further demands from the Pakistan Government for information on the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.
Stating that the process has reached a point of exhaustion and with no tangible results, Chidambaram said Islamabad’s description of India’s sixth dossier on the attack as a ‘Rehash’ could be the last straw as far as New Delhi is concerned.hidambaram’s comments came as Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Thursday that the latest dossier provided by India on the Mumbai attacks as a “rehash of information” contained in previous documents, indicating that it is inadequate for taking action against LeT founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed.
“The last dossier from India was a rehash of information received in previous dossiers,” Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit also told a weekly news briefing.
The spokesman did not say how Pakistan intended to deal with Saeed, for whom Interpol recently issued a Red Corner Notice.
The trial of suspects arrested by Pakistani authorities in connection with the Mumbai attacks is proceeding and Islamabad is “serious about bringing the perpetrators to book,” Basit said.
At the same time, he said, Pakistan “still believes that the composite dialogue is the only way forward.” He also made it clear that if the stalled dialogue were to be resumed, “it would not be a favour to Pakistan because talks and exchange of views is the only way” to improve ties between the two sides. Mumbai, Sep 4 (ANI): Twelve people, including children, were killed and 13 others injured in a landslide in Mumbai on Friday morning.
According to police the incident took place in the suburban Andheri area due to the heavy rain and water logging in the lower areas.
Landslide hit the Lal Bahdur Shastri Nagar slum at Sakinaka early this morning, damaging over 20 houses, Additional Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta said.
Mumbai Police have deployed ten fire engines to clear the debris from the spot.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to the family members of each of those killed in the landslide.
Chavan has also announced medical aid of Rs.25, 000 and 50,000 to each injured.
The state government has deputed, the Minister of State for Home, Naseem Khan to personally supervise rescue and relief operations. (ANI)

Srinagar, Sep 4 (ANI): An ancient sculpture of Hindu Goddess of wealth Gajalakshmi has recently been discovered at Nagbal Lesser village in Jammu and Kashmir.
The sculpture, carved out of brownish limestone, is now kept for further examination at the office of Archives Archaeology and Museum in Srinagar. It will be shifted to Sri Pratap Singh Museum for public display later.
“As far as the object (sculpture) is concerned it is very important. According to our earlier examination, the statue dates back to the 6th or 7th century. It’s of brownish colour and from the perspective of craftsmanship, it is finely chiselled out,” said Khurshid Ahmad Qadri, Director, Archives Archaeology and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir.
The statue, measuring nine inches in height and five inches in width, is seated on the lotus throne placed between two lions. The main sculpture is enclosed in a stone frame, the top of which projects the shape of elephant motifs towards the head of the deity.
The idol holds a lotus in her right hand and cornucopia in her left hand. The other end of the drapery covering the lower body of the sculpture does not go behind its shoulder but is wrapped around in pleats beneath the chest of the deity.
The carving and costumes of the sculpture speak volumes about skilled craftsmanship of the ancient Kashmiri art.
“As far as its art is concerned, this art form connects it to the Gandhara School of Art. The Gandhara School of Art was founded in the first century BC. The theme cultivated by Gandhara artists later reached Kashmir. The costume we get to see in this sculpture shows a confluence of Greek and Indian art forms,” said Iqbal Ahmad, a historian.
This is the only sculpture found from the Lesser Kokernag area of Kashmir so far. However, the presence of pottery in an around the Lesser village reveals presence of some ancient settlements. By Afzal Bhat (ANI)

London, Sept 4 (ANI): Did you think Twittering is a new up-to-the-minute technological advancement? Well, then here’s a piece of information: The Edwardians were doing it 100 years ago – using postcards instead of computers.
A study by Lancaster and Manchester Metropolitan universities has revealed how the picture postcard, containing an image on one side and space for writing on the other, became an instant hit after it was introduced in 1902.
Researchers have calculated that almost six billion were posted in Britain over a nine-year period from 1901 and 1910, reveal study authors Drs Julia Gillen and Nigel Hall.
Since post was delivered up to 10 times a day in major cities, the medium allowed users to write and respond quickly and cheaply.
Just like Twitter, which restricts users to 140 characters per “tweet”, postcard writers only have a limited amount of space to pen a message.
Some of the postcards were straightforward, such as: “A PC from you this mg. is it tomorrow or next Sat. the opening….”
But others were definitely rather saucy.
“What ho! She bum.ps. If she doesn’t bump she bounces,” said a postcard written in mirror writing in 1904. “If she doesn’t bounce ye get yer money back.”
Gillen told Sky News Online: “Postcards, were as speedy in their day as tweeting is today. And there was immediacy too – you didn’t just send postcards on holiday, you received them.” (ANI)

Hyderabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Forty-eight hours after the tragic death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash, a fierce succession race has begun notwithstanding the Congress party’s decision to put off the selection of a new leader till early next week.
Seeking to cash in on an emotional wave of sympathy, loyalists of the deceased chief minister have reportedly unleashed a strident campaign for making his son, Jaganmohan Reddy, the new chief minister.
“Jagan knew the mind of Rajasekhara Reddy. He alone can finish the unfulfilled agenda of his father,” said government chief whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka who is marshalling the MLAs in favour of Jagan.
Congress sources in Delhi have thrown up other names as possible successors. They include Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of State for Defence M. Pallam Raju, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao’s daughter and junior Union minister Purandeshwari Devi and acting chief minister M K Rosaiah.
Almost all the state ministers, about 22 MPs and several Congress legislators have pitched for Jaganmohan Reddy through the media even as hundreds of party workers gathered at the secretariat,
CM’s camp office, Gandhi Bhavan and various traffic intersections are vocally making a similar demand.
The Jagan group has reportedly met Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily at the Lake View guest house to pursue their demand even as many Congress MLAs faxed individual memorandum to the party headquarters in New Delhi in support of Jaganmohan Reddy as CM.
They also called on Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari and submitted a list of 122 signatures in support of him being made the chief minister.
According to sources, there was even an attempt to pressure the governor to swear in Jagan as acting CM immediately, but that was abandoned as Rosaiah had already been sworn in by the time the loyalists reached Raj Bhavan.
Jagan, 36, is a first time MP from Kadapa and is merely 100 days old in politics. While Veerappa Moily made it clear that Rosaiah was only an interim CM and that the Congress high command will chose YSR’s successor in the next few days. (ANI)

London, September 4 (ANI): India has rejected applications from two US companies for patents on two key AIDS drugs in a move that could mean more people in poor countries will have access to life-saving medicines.
According to a report in Nature News, the decisions are the latest in a string of legal victories for Cipla, India’s largest generic drug maker.
The move could also signal that patent offices in emerging economies are set to take a tougher line than industrialized countries on which drugs deserve patents.
India’s patent office rejected claims by Gilead on Tenofovir – a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, which is a frontline drug against HIV/AIDS in poor countries – and by Tibotec on Darunavir, a newer and more expensive protease inhibitor used as a second-line drug.
Both drugs block enzymes that HIV needs to replicate.
The rejection of patents on the two drugs opens the way for India to not only produce cheaper generics for its own population, but also export them to countries where the drug is not patented – reaffirming India’s role as the ‘pharmacy’ of poor countries.
“We are delighted that we have been vindicated,” said Yusuf Hamied, chairman and managing director of Cipla.
The major battle was over Tenofovir, given its extensive use.
In 2006, Cipla and a group of Indian and Brazilian non-government organizations (NGOs) independently filed oppositions to Gilead’s patent applications on the drug – marking the first time foreign NGOs had joined Indian ones in contesting a drug patent, a move motivated by the fact that the decision could impact pricing of the drug in Brazil.
Gilead responded by striking a deal the same year with 13 other Indian generic manufacturers, giving them a license to make the drug for a 5 percent royalty.
“Gilead was worried that they might lose, so they offered licenses, but these came with a sting in the tail,” said Michelle Childs, director of Medecins sans Frontieres’s Access to Essential Medicines Campaign.
Manufacturers could only buy the active ingredient – the most expensive part of a drug – from Gilead-approved suppliers, and they could only sell the drug to 95 of the poorest countries, not to middle-income countries such as China and Brazil which nonetheless have substantial poor populations.
Together these restrictions limited the price reductions the generic makers could offer, according to Childs.
“The Indian patent office decision now guarantees such countries access to a cheap generic supplier,” she said.
“Cipla decided to fight rather than sign up to the license; it took a risk and it has paid off,” said Childs. (ANI)

London, September 4 (ANI): A British scientist has developed a “telepathic” microchip that can enable paraplegics to operate PCs and television by thought alone.
Jon Spratley, 28, who works for Cornwall-based specialist engineering company 42 Technology, developed this chip while studying for a PhD at Birmingham University.
He says that the chip takes advantage of the fact that even though paraplegics are unable to move their limbs, their brains still produce an electronic signal when they try.
He adds that once implanted onto the surface of the brain, the chip captures this electronic “thought” and transmits it wirelessly to control a range of simple devices.
He hopes that this chip may prove very help paraplegics, amputees, and those with motor neurone disease to operate light switches, PCs and even cars by the power of thought alone.pratley, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, revealed that the main aim of his research was to “help patients communicate”.
“We are just trying to help people with severe communication problems or motor neurone disease – like Dr Stephen Hawking or Christopher Reeve,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
“What we have designed would allow them to control a computer with their thoughts – if they imagine their muscles moving that could flick a light switch for example,” he added.
Spratley, honoured with the MediMaton prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, claims that implanting the chips will require minimal invasive surgery.
Tests conducted in the laboratory have shown the technology to work, but human trials have not been conducted as yet. (ANI)

Hyderabad, Sep 4 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi paid homage to former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhar Reddy on Friday.
Reddy, who died in a helicopter crash along with four others on Wednesday morning, also received floral tribute from other Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Defence Minister A K Antony and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit at the Chief Minister’s Camp office in Hyderabad’s Begumpet area.
The leaders also wrote condolence messages in a book at the camp office.hereafter, the funeral cortege moved out of the premises and moved along a designated route towards the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, where it will lie in state for about three hours to allow the general public and politicians to pay their last respects to the departed leader.
The Andhra Pradesh capital was a see of grieving humanity as people from all walks of life gathered in tens of thousands on major thoroughfares to give a fitting farewell to their son of the soil, YSR.
The flower bedecked army truck and funeral convoy, led by his emotionally distressed son Jaganmohan Reddy, wound its way slowly through the streets of the city towards the stadium. Jagan Reddy greeted the emotionally charged masses lining the route with folded hands.
Reddy’s burial will be held at around 5 p. m. in his native village in Kadapa District.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has declared five days of state mourning in honour of YSR and cancelled all the official programs in the state.
Reddy’s Bell 430 chopper went missing on Wednesday morning at about 9.35 and could only be located almost 24 hours later on Thursday morning following a night long search operation by different units of security personnel including Army’s Commandos, Air Force’s Sukhoi-30, and 5,000 CRPF personnel.
The wreckage was discovered atop a hill about 40 nautical miles from Kurnoool town.
Along with YSR, four others-Dr P Subramanium, the Special Secretary to the Chief Minister; ASC Wesley, Chief Security Officer and two pilots Group Captain SK Bhatia and Captain MS Reddy-died in the crash. (ANI)

New York, September 4 (ANI): Janet Jackson may soon break her silence about her the death of her brother, for she has reportedly agreed to give an exclusive interview for a journal.
She is the only member of Michael Jackson’s family who has been keeping quite about the ‘Thriller’ star’s death.
Sources, however, say that her silence will not last long because Harper’s Bazaar has landed the first interview with her since Michael’s death.

Washington, September 4 (ANI): Actress Hilary Swank has urged people to support a new scheme to rehouse unwanted pets.
The ‘Million Dollar Baby’ star became an ambassador for the Home 4 the IAMS Holidays Pet Adoption Campaign, which helps animals in shelters find new owners.
“I’m so proud to be working to help raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.
“Last year, the program’s adoption goal was to get one million pets adopted in just three months, but this year the goal is even bigger.
“We’re on a mission to find loving homes for 1.5 million orphaned pets between October 1st and January 4th,” she added.
The animal loving Oscar-winner has previously adopted many pets, most recent being her two dogs, Karoo and Rumi. (ANI)

Hyderabad, Sep 4 (ANI): The last rites of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S.Rajsekhar Reddy will be held with full state honours at his native place Pulivendula in Cuddapah district today.
According to sources the burial of the departed Chief Minister will be held at around 5 p. m. Before that the body of the Reddy will be placed at Lal Bahdur Shastri stadium to enable the public and supporters to pay the last respects, sources said.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has declared five days state mourning in honour of YSR and cancelled all the official programmes in the state and the national flag will be hoisted at half-mast.

London, Sept 4 (ANI): Rapper Jay-Z has rubbished all criticism of hip-hop by well-known African-Americans who believe the genre degrades their ethnicity.
The superstar said the protests were only for “publicity purposes”.
Hip-hop recently generated a lot of disapproval from prominent black celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby, who say it is misogynistic and frequent uses the racial N-word.
An annoyed Cosby even went on to pull off a hip-hop album that was “without the profanity, misogyny, violence and braggadocio”.
However Jay-Z thinks otherwise. The hitmaker says rap portrays important issues in its own style.
The Daily Express quoted him as saying: “Put it like this; everything is birthed from somewhere real, right? These emotions and this anger and this angst in reality rap is coming from a real place.
“People in those circles try to dismiss it, buy you can’t because it’s part of culture. They only attack hip-hop because, and I hate to sound like a cynic, but this is all done for publicity purposes, right? You don’t attack the real issue – you attack the thing that’s popular.” (ANI)
