New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) Mourning the death of veteran actor Feroz Khan, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says that despite several attempts in the past the two could not work together.
‘There were many attempts by both of us to work together but somehow it didn’t work out,’ Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.
‘He will be remembered for his passion and commitment to the craft. May his soul rest in peace and may the Almighty give his family strength to bear the loss,’ he added.
The flamboyant actor-filmmaker died Sunday at his farmhouse in Bangalore after battling cancer for a year. He was 69.
Amitabh describes Feroz Khan, who made hits like ‘Dharmatma’ and ‘Qurbani’, as a flamboyant filmmaker.
‘A flamboyant filmmaker, one that in the middle of his acting career became a producer and director and gave us some very memorable films – all with a certain stamp of flamboyance.
‘What he displayed in his persona, reflected in the way he made his films. In many ways, he pioneered a certain flash and sophistication in his very first venture as a maker and that remained with him and all his films throughout,’ he wrote.
Amitabh also pointed out that Feroz Khan always had a ‘progressive and visible difference in the way he functioned’ including the ‘content of the subjects he chose, in the unique casting that he did or in the fresh talent that he introduced in music and presentation’.
Amitabh recalled the recent Stardust award function where Feroz Khan was given the Stardust Pride of the Industry award.
‘In a most poignant moment, his son Fardeen had received it on his behalf from Jaya (Bachchan) on stage – Feroz being too ill to be present,’ he added.

After the news that Yash Raj Films has signed actor Parmeet Sethi to direct their next venture, there is growing cynicism in the industry about the decision. Going by the track record of YRF for the past few years, many feel that the decision could not make a big difference to YRF’s plan to churn out big hits.
Now, that Aditya Chopra has made his decision clear, what remains to be seen is how this impacts the fortunes of one of the country’s biggest film production houses which desperately is looking for a magical formula to stay relevant.

No one could have imagined that after a no-show in NO SMOKING, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and John Abraham would come together ever again, but they are and that too for a big budgeted, multi-starrer titled BOMBAY VELVET.
There are many theories doing the rounds as far as the story of the film is concerned. However what is clear is that the film is a thriller and is set in the early 60’s Bombay. It is based on true stories, taken from real life incidents and shows how Bombay changed from a city to a metropolis.
The iconoclastic director (in his columns) reveals that the film is based loosely on the life of the legendary filmmaker and actor, Guru Dutt, who Anurag holds in great esteem. Another story doing the rounds is that the film is about a real life hero of the masses from the 60’s. But amidst all that one factor that is common is that the film is set in Bombay of the 60’s.
So, the audience should be prepared for a period film from the filmmaker who has always dared to be different. Period films have always been exciting and to see one from Anurag Kashyap’s point of view would definitely be an intellectually satisfying experience for those who demand more than just time pass entertainment.

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) Sonu Sood has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ made by UAE filmmaker Ali Mostafa. A major part of the film requires the Bollywood actor to be badly disfigured and the makeup artist chosen to bring about half-mutilated face was none other than Jean Ann Black, who worked on Brad Pitt’s face in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.
The actor is all praise for Ann Black.
‘Actually half the face of my character gets mutilated. I couldn’t believe it when I saw what miracle had been worked by the makeup artist. I was horrified to see my own face in the mirror,’ Sonu told IANS.
Sonu, who was recently seen in films like ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ and ‘Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi’, has just finished shooting for ‘City Of Life’ in Dubai with Alexandra Maria Lara.
‘What she did to my face was stunning and shocking. My makeup used to take three-four hours every morning. I had to sit patiently as 50 percent of my face disappeared under makeup – literally. And then there were these special lenses not just for the cornea but the entire eye which gave it a scary clotted eye.’
Sonu is glad his little son wasn’t with him.
‘He’d have got really frightened. I did when I saw myself. People who’ve seen what she has done can’t believe the transformation. They say the makeup artist has done as good a job on my face as she did with Brad Pitt,’ said Sonu.
And to further complete the Brad-Benjamin Button picture Sonu even has the actor who played Brad’s father in the film as his co-star.
‘Jason Fleming who played Brad Pitt’s father in ‘Benjamin Button’ plays the villain in ‘City Of Life’,’ he said.

Onlookers in the crowded Lajpat Nagar market in New Delhi was amazed when they realized that none other than Rishi Kapoor was shopping amidst them. To their amusement, the veteran actor wasn’t visiting premium shops and was instead hunting for clothes that carried a dirt cheap price tag on them. Though Delhites were left clueless about the reason behind Rishi Kapoor saving money during shopping, there is a tale attached to this.
The actual reason behind this was that Rishi Kapoor was in the city shooting for his next film DO DOONI CHAAR in which he plays a middle class Mathematics teacher. For this role of his, he didn’t want anything fancy that could potentially go against his character. Hence, to lend a realistic feel, he wanted the clothing to match his character’s persons. In quick time, he himself stepped out on the streets of Lajpat Nagar, one of the busiest markets in Delhi for middle class ‘junta’, and picked up a few clothes for himself.
Confirms Rishi Kapoor who has just finished a marathon shooting schedule for the film, ”I set a clear mandate for me that my clothes won’t be costly at all for DO DOONI CHAAR. What was the point in doing so? How can you make a professor wear expensive clothes when he is barely surviving in his middle class bearings? This is why I thought of going out in the market and pick things up myself from the stands. I made sure that my sweaters and pajamas cost not more than Rs. 200.”
Neetu Singh, who makes a comeback to the film industry with DO DOONI CHAAR and is seen as Rishi Kapoor’s wife in the film also, has a similar tale to tell. ”Even though it is my comeback film, I wasn’t tempted to don a glamorous persona. My wardrobe throughout the film’s duration has also been kept very simple and true to the requirement of the Punjabi housewife character that I play.”

His debut venture KAL KISSNE DEKHA is yet to be released but Jackky Bhagnani has already started working on his next film. To be kick started after the release of his first film which is being pitched as a ‘romantic musical thriller’, Jackky’s next film will belong to the same genre (romantic musical comedy) as JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA and warrant a similar characterization and narrative.
The film would yet again be produced by his father Vashu Bhagnani and initial work on casting has already begun.
Says a source from the production team, ”Jackky has just started off as a lead hero and he wants to work in films that are young and energetic. Moreover, he wants to be looked as someone who belongs to the youth and is one of them. He doesn’t want to distance himself from his target audience i.e. youth by being aloof and unapproachable.”
This is the reason why a worldwide contest has been launched where youngsters can approach the production house and get lucky by being selected in the project.
Confirms the man of the moment, Jackky Bhagnani, ”Yes, we are launching our next film on a big scale. It will be having all the ingredients of a young entertainer and will be on the lines of JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA. I loved the film for its simplicity. Also, the very fact that each of the characters in the film was so identifiable and real is what makes me love it even more.”
There is good news for at least five newcomers as the film is looking at introducing three boys and two girls (all Indian though) from across the world. Jackky will of course head the cast while the leading lady opposite him is yet to be finalized.
Considering the fact that JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA was not just centered on Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza but a horde of other friends as well, how much of opportunity can youngsters expect in Jackky’s film?
”At least the same if not more”, promptly says Jackky, ”Yet again, each of these five youngsters will also be an important part of the film. The focus will definitely not just be on me. We are looking at a wide scale search for these young newcomers.”
Vaishali Desai is the leading lady who makes her debut with KAL KISSNE DEKHA that also stars veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. Incidentally, the campus setting warrants a horde of youngsters in this film as well like Akshay Kapoor, Bhairavi Goswami, Kunal Kumar, Rachna Shah and Nushrat Bharucha.

‘After being in the industry for more than a decade, the least I know is to gather the pulse of the audience. I guess every actor from deep within his heart knows whether his film would work or not. In case of TERA MERA KI RISHTA, my heart told me every time that it would work big time. And the moment I returned from my road trip for the film in Punjab, I caught the pulse of the audiences and was reassured that they won’t let me down”, exclaims Jimmy Sheirgill, the lead hero of the film, who can barely conceal his excitement as his Punjabi film has turned out to be one of the biggest hits of his career.
The film was released primarily in the North belt of India and that too on selected screens. Moreover, since EROS has distributed the film, it didn’t really find premium multiplex chain for itself. Also, except for Punjab, the film didn’t see many theaters for itself in Delhi NCR, a region where TERA MERA KI RISHTA could have potentially found good audience.
”The idea was to go slow and release the film in select theaters to begin with. We hand-picked theaters in India while giving it a good release in overseas as well. The demand for the film has been overwhelming wherever it has been released. The target audience has loved the film which is already on a profit making zone”, says a source close to the production house.
Jimmy Sheirgill has the final word, ”Let’s stop blaming recession for all our flops. As the adage goes, a good film will always work. In the times when conventional Hindi films are being shown the door, mainly because they are poor products, a good film like TERA MERA KI RISHTA turning out to be such a huge success is a silver lining. It has further reassured me, especially after A WEDNESDAY that big ideas matter more than anything else.”

”I enjoyed all the attention of my six male co-stars-Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Danny Denzongpa, Fardeen Khan, Irrfan Khan and Manoj Bajpai
during the shoot. After all, six men to woo a single woman is not a trifle matter,” Dia told a weekly magazine.
Asked if she would enjoy the same attention from six men in real life, the actor said: ”It will be fun!”
However, Dia has no problems in wooing her man if situation demands.
”I would love to chase a man who won’t pay me attention. I will literally dance to his tunes till he doesn’t tell me the reason for his actions,” smiled Dia

Heard Katrina Kaif is taking extra interest in painting these days. Like beau Salman Khan, Katrina too is taking up the brush and colours whenever she is getting some time off her busy schedule.
Sources close to the actor said: ”Katrina is a quite good at paintings.”
Recently, she was overheard telling a fellow actor that paintings help her to explore her creative side.
Kats said she is more interested in drawing human portraits than animals or nature. She has even canvassed many of Sallu’s family members and gifted them the portraits.
Well, with actors turning painters of late, may be it’s time for MF Hussain to think about his Bollywood debut!

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) Actor-director Rohit Roy is all set to step into Amitabh Bachchan’s shoes for the Bengali adaptation of 1973 hit film ‘Abhimaan’, best remembered for its songs like ‘Teri bindiya re’ and superlative performances by the Big B and Jaya Bachchan.
‘I’m doing a major project called ‘Pa Ma Ga Re Sa’, which is a modern musical love story. It will be my first Bengali film and it is special because it is based on ‘Abhimaan’. It is basically an adaptation of the film,’ Rohit told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
‘The film has Gauri Karnik, who was seen in ‘Sur’ before. And former Miss India (Earth) Reshmi Ghosh will be seen as the other woman. It is being directed by Surajit Dhar,’ he added.
The first schedule of the film has already been shot and Rohit, who has recently stepped in as the host of the third season of TV dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa’, will soon head to Kolkata to shoot a few more scenes of it.
Rohit has joined ‘Jhalak…’ midway and is co-hosting the show with TV actress Shweta Tiwari.
‘This show is very close to my heart. I watched the first season, hosted the second and now I’m hosting the third mid-way. I think even the producers have grown to like me and I’m really excited to be back on the host’s seat,’ he said.
On the Bollywood front, the actor has a bouquet of films like ‘Mittal Vs Mittal’, ‘Apartment’ and ‘Alibaug’ in his kitty. And the actor, who had made his first stint with the arclights with popular TV show ‘Swabhimaan’, is excited about essaying different roles in each of these movies.
‘In ‘Mittal Vs Mittal’, I’m playing an abusive husband to Rituparna Sengupta, in Jagmohan Mundra’s ‘Apartment’, I’m playing a very jovial, guy-next-door sort of a role and in ‘Alibaug’, my role is of a doctor who cheats on his wife. As an actor, I can’t draw a line and decide a set kind of roles that I want to do, I have to be diverse and I am enjoying doing it,’ said Rohit, who also featured in hit film ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’.
Besides this, he is also toying with the idea of scripting his next directorial venture, which will be a remake of Basu Chatterjee’s 1981 classic ‘Shaukeen’.
Chatterjee’s film, about the adventures of three old men in Goa, starred Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal, but Rohit’s ‘grand wishlist’ for the cast of his ‘glamorous’ version of the film includes Rishi Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Boman Irani.
‘We are trying to finish the scripting of this mad comedy. Though the idea of the film will be based on ‘Shaukeen’, the reason for their adventures would change and the setting would be more glamorous – maybe they would go to Las Vegas instead of Goa.
‘As for the cast, I hope these people in my wish list would want to work in the film after hearing the script,’ said Rohit.

Ranchi, April 19 (IANS) Taking the lead frm national parties, regional outfits in Jharkhand have also roped in film stars to campaign for their candidates in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
However, the Congress is ahead of the other political parties having roped in Bollywood actresses Mashima Chaudhary and Minissha Lamba, famous yester-years actress Zeenat Aman, and television star Ronit Roy, among others, to campaign for the party.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has brought in its Rajya Sabha MP Hema Malini and Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha, while the regional outfit, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) has taken help of Bollywood actresses Nisha Kothari and Koina Mitra and television star Shweta Tewary.
Mahima and Zeenat Aman participated in Congress party road shows in Ranchi, Godda and at other places. Talking to reporters, Mahima said: ‘The Congress is the only secular party of the country. Considering the credentials of Congress, I am here to campaign for the party.’
Hema Malini has addressed nearly ten rallies in her two visits to the state, while Sinha has campaigned only in favour of party candidate Yashwant Sinha in Hazaribagh. ‘Atalji’s personality and ethics impressed me to join BJP. I am trying to spread the ideology of the BJP in the country,’ she said.
However, the BJP says it is not using film stars for campaigning as both Hema Malini and Sinha are dedicated workers of the party.
‘Hema Malini and Shatrughhan Sinha are in BJP for more than a decade. Both of them have campaigned for the party in the last several elections. Being party workers, they campaigned in Jharkhand. We are not using film stars who joined our party at election time,’ said Raghubar Das, the chief of the BJP’s state unit.
However, it is the JVM-P’s move to seek help of the item girls and television stars that has surprised everyone. The party is led by the state’s first chief minister and BJP rebel Babulal Marandi, who is trying to make the JVM-P emerge as alternative to both the BJP and the Congress in the state.
‘Regional parties like the JVM-P use film stars to popularise the party among the people. JVM-P is a new regional outfit formed two years ago. It is struggling to make its presence felt in the state. The film stars help regional parties gather crowds so that the party views could be spread among the voters,’ said R.N. Gaud, a retired professor of Ranchi University.

Film: ‘Yagna’; Director: Krishna Brahma; Cast: Sree Murali, Priyanka, Om Prakash Rao, Jayaprakash Reddy, M.S. Narayan and L.B. Sreeram; Music: Murali Krishna; Rating: *
‘Yagna’ was publicized as an action-oriented horror film, but it ends up as a horror of horrors. This Kannada film is illogical and uninspiring and seems to have gone terribly wrong in every department.
Two things become apparently clear after seeing director Krishna Brahma’s ‘Yagna’ – firstly a talented actor like Sree Murali, who had a great beginning with a film like ‘Chandra Chakori’, seems to have perfected the art of choosing wrong subjects. And secondly, Krishna Brahma needs to brush up his narratorial skills.
‘Yagna’ lacks freshness and its narration is pedestrian. Producer Shankar has taken the storyline from actor Charmmee’s successful Telugu film ‘Manthra’, which released just a year ago. Krishna has just made some cosmetic changes to present his own version of ‘Manthra’.
To make the project economically viable, producer Shankar has included many Telugu artists like Jayaprakash Reddy, Venu Madhav, M.S. Narayan and L.B. Sriram.
Krishna Brahma repeats the same old stereotypes associated with almost every other horror flick – door locks being opened, curtains oscillating, antique objects shown in different angles – and nothing of these gimmicks take you to the edge of your seat.
And many sequences of the film are predictable. The film comes into life just before the climax, but the director has floundered in this as well.
The film is about Anji, a carefree youngster who works for a city-based don. Known to be a daredevil, Anji is sent to a haunted house by the don, who wants to usurp the property. Anji goes into the cursed house with his friends and is witness to the weird goings-on in the house.
In the meanwhile, Yagna, a music student,, comes to the house along with her friends on a project. But a murder in the house forces Anji and Yagna’s friends to leave the house.
As the story progresses, Yagna declares her love for Anji and wants to marry him. She also reveals that she is the legal heir of the disputed property.
But Anji goes ahead with his investigations into the murder and it is later revealed that he is actually a police officer.
Sree Murali may have to refuse projects like ‘Yagna’ now onwards. He is good in action sequences, but his efforts are wasted because of the poor narrative. Debutant actress Priyanka indulges in a lot of skin show in the song sequences.
The so-called comedy by Om Prakash Rao and a galaxy of Telugu artists are in poor taste.
Krishna Brahma has also failed to bring the best out of the technicians. Music director Murali Krishna, who gave a few good tunes in his first film ‘Neene Neene’, has fumbled in his compositions. Nothing special can be written about Niranjan Babu’s camera work either.
‘Yagna’ is an ordinary film. It may not be liked even by fans of the horror genre.

San Francisco – Actor Ashton Kutcher has won the great Twitter popularity contest, becoming the first contributor to the cult microblogging site to amass one million followers.
Kutcher passed the milestone early Friday morning, just half an hour before CNN reached the same mark. The two leading Twitter contributors had been in a race to pass the 1-million mark, with the winner donating 10,000 mosquito bed nets to charity for World Malaria Day later this month.
Kutcher celebrated the victory in an online video feed with his actress wife Demi Moore.
The milestone underlined the growing popularity of the Twitter site, where contributors post messages of up to 140 characters in length and distribute them to the cellphones of their followers.
According to statistics released Thursday by web tracking firm Comscore, the site now has 9.3 million users, and its growth rate in March was 131 per cent compared to a year earlier. (dpa)
