5 Ways Hybrid Battery Packs are Being Improved

The battery pack in a hybrid car is arguably one of the most important parts that make it go. As you may already know, a hybrid car makes use of a combination of an internal combustion engine and electric motor. While the gasoline that provides energy for the engine is stored in a fuel tank, the electric motor gets its power from a different source.

A battery pack stores and supplies the energy necessary to power a hybrid car’s electric motor. Without the chemical reactions that happen inside a battery, the technology that makes a hybrid vehicle a hybrid simply wouldn’t be possible.

But despite the battery pack’s prominence and importance in hybrid vehicles, sometimes they get a bad rap. Skeptics of hybrid technology point to several shortcomings associated with these car batteries. For example, they don’t provide enough power, and therefore hybrid cars are slow; the batteries are too heavy, which counteracts a hybrid’s supposed fuel economy; the materials many batteries are made from, like lead, are harmful for the environment and go against the familiar “green” claim.

The good news is this hasn’t deterred battery manufacturers from trying to make their product better. On the contrary, there happen to be many ways that battery packs are undergoing improvement. In no particular order, here are five ways that hybrid battery packs are being improved.

The Death Of “Web 2.0?

The Death Of “Web 2.0?I’m not going to discuss the economic meltdown and its devastating effect on technology companies and internet startups in this post, but rather something that crossed my mind earlier this morning: “Web 2.0? seems to become more and more a void (and an avoided) term. Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is definitely apparent.

So why do I say it’s fading? For one, because the number of startups that contact us and include the term Web 2.0 in the subject line or message is visibly dropping (and that’s a good thing), and I hardly ever see it mentioned anymore on other technology blogs and news sites either. That’s not really tangible, so I took a look at the number of mentions of the phrase across the web, and they seem to be decreasing significantly, reflecting my feeling on this.

Judging by Google Trends, which shows how often a particular search term is entered relative to the total search volume across various regions of the world (and in various languages), the term started being used at the end of 2004 when Tim O’Reilly organized the first edition of the Web 2.0 Conference. Search queries for the term started picking up in the middle of 2005, when TechCrunch was started – with the tagline “Tracking Web 2.0? by the way – and the number kept increasing until the end of 2007. After that, the trend is clearly downwards, falling back to the level it reached in early 2006 today. If the trend continues, there should only be a handful of people left who scour search engines for “Web 2.0? by 2011.

Also noteworthy: take a look at the geographic regions that have generated the highest volumes of worldwide search traffic for the term over the years – it’s Asia, with the top 5 regions being India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia (in that order). Furthermore, Google Trends pegs the number one language in which people search for stuff related to the topic of Web 2.0 to be Russian before English.
And just in case you’re curious: “Web 3.0? doesn’t seem to picking up much.
Let’s all rejoice.

Google’s “Insights for Search”, a beta service that analyzes a portion of worldwide Google web searches from all Google domains to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you’ve entered – relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time – gives an even better overview:I’ve never had anything against the phrase “Web 2.0?, but I wouldn’t miss it a bit if it were never used again.

Top 10 technologies that can improve morning commute

Washington, January 26 (ANI): A laser-based system called LightLane, which can help keep cyclists safe from fast moving vehicles, is being proposed as one of the newest technologies that can improve that morning commute.

The system clearly mark, in bright red lights, where car lanes end and bike lanes begin, helping keep cyclists safe even at night when reflective devices don’t quite cut it.

Second top new technology in the same field is for the benefit of commuters who have to choose between breakfast and catching the bus, reports Fox News.

Companies like TransitTracker keep tags on buses and trains so that people can track them online or on their cell phones.

The system follows a commuter’s ride’s actual location – not an estimated schedule – so that he/she knows exactly when it will arrive at his/her station or stop.

Third on the list is an ingenious iPhone application called iNap, which involves the phone’s in-built GPS device to track a sleeping commuter’s location, and set off an alarm to wake him up when he is near his destination.

Following is the Attention Assist technology, through which Mercedes-Benz is planning to manage fatigue, which it says is the cause of most accidents.

The technology reads telltale signals, such as the way one is steering and braking, monitoring one’s sleepiness and flashing an alert when the person seems too tired.

Wrapping up the top five was a program being developed by Enter Nissan, which will sense obstacles and incoming vehicles, instantly reacting to avert a crash.

It uses a laser to give it 360 degrees of protection, modelled on a bumblebee’s compound eyes that can see in most directions.

The technology has not been worked into an auto yet, and currently remains housed inside a duck-sized robot.

Sixth on the list was IntelliDrive, which is aimed at allowing vehicle-to-vehicle interaction, so that if a car brakes suddenly, it could transmit a signal to cars behind, allowing drivers or computers to brake in time.

It was followed by an Audi-sponsored technology called Travolution, which lets a car communicate with traffic systems, and determine when lights will turn green, allowing the driver to coast through intersections.

It even calculates the speed the driver should maintain to get to lights at the right time, something that can help ease up and achieve better fuel economy.

Eighth on the list was a technology that can allow to charge music players and other small electronics just by shaking them.

Another top idea would be to design high-tech parking spots that can alert people when they are empty via e-mails or text messages.

Wrapping up the top 10 was an idea to make self-parking cars. Ford is said to have embraced self-parking technology, and plans to equip two of its 2010 models with cameras and sensors that let their Lincolns do the work for you.

Top 10 newest gadgets and applications bent on improving that morning commute:

1. LightLane

2. TransitTracker

3. iNap

4. Attention Assist

5. Biomimetic Robot

6. IntelliDrive

7. Travolution

8. Shake It

9. Meter-Mail

10. Self-parking cars (ANI)

Google’s GDrive system may render personal computer history

London, January 26 (ANI): Search engine giant Google will soon come up with a system that may make the personal computer virtually redundant, predict technology experts.

The GDrive system will merge Google’s all existing web-based services to make them easier to use together.

Industry reports suggest that the ‘GDrive’ would enable users to store almost all their data on the Internet, and access it from wherever they are.

“Throw your hard drive away, Google’s Gdrive is arriving in 2009,” the Telegraph quoted TG Daily, an American technology news website, as predicting.

The GDrive would make it possible to access and update information like emails, photographs, music, documents and spreadsheets from any device with an Internet connection.

The novel system is being described as ‘cloud computing’, wherein the web rather than the hard drive is used as the place where information is stored.

Google experts are said to have begun convincing the world of its benefits.

The fact that such services are usually free could undermine the Microsoft business model, which was originally based on the ability to sell software packages with new machines.

It is believed that the GDrive could “cause a major paradigm shift in how we use computers and bring Google one step closer to dethroning Windows on your desktop”.

However, there are some who think that trusting Google with so much personal or commercial data is dangerous, for information may not be as safe in the cloud as it is in a computer.

Peter Brown, of the Free Software Foundation charity, said: “Does it matter to you that someone can see everything on your computer? Does it matter that Google can be subpoenaed at any time to hand over all your data to the American government?”

A Google spokesman refused to confirm whether the GDrive launch was imminent.

“We don’t comment on speculation, and we don’t pre-announce product launches,” she said. (ANI)

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Release Date Announced

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Release Date AnnouncedNokia have finally set a date for the official release of the 5800 XpressMusic over at the UK. The first S60 touch-enabled phone will start selling through the Finnish company’s flagship stores starting from 23 January at SIM-free price of little less than 280 euro (249 GBP).

The SIM-free handset will also be available through the Nokia UK online store. Just a week later on 30 January, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will also start selling through all the major UK carriers and mobile phone retailers.

The Nokia 5800 release date is actually 23rd February instead of 23rd January. The UK carriers and cellphone retailers will be getting the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in about the same timeframe.

The best part about the this piece of news however is the announced price. The UK Nokia 5800 price tag of 280 euro means that Nokia have finally managed to deliver on the promise they made when they first announced the 5800 XpressMusic. The expected retail price of the handset at that time was 279 euro but the great hype that the device generated kept it much higher for the holiday shopping spree.

Internet Explorer users at risk says Microsoft corporation

World’’s most popular web browser Internet Explorer has some security flaw due to which people using it may have their computers hijacked, says its developer Microsoft Corporation.

The company says that computers installed with Windows Internet Explorer can be hacked for stealing personal information about their users, when they visit websites corrupted by cyber criminals.

Media reports also suggest that about 10,000 websites have been compromised since the previous week.

Microsoft has revealed in its Malware Protection blog that attacks on computers using Internet Explorer 7 have been detected.

The company has also admitted that other versions of Internet Explorer are “potentially vulnerable”.

“We are actively investigating the vulnerability that these attacks attempt to exploit,” the Telegraph quoted the firm as saying in a security statement.

“We will continue to monitor the threat environment and update this advisory if this situation changes,” the statement added.

The company has revealed in its Malware Protection blog that about 0.2 per cent of Internet Explorer users had already visited one of the websites, which have been designed to exploit the flaw, by last Saturday.

There has been a sharp increase in attacks since the first exploitation of the flaw last week, says the newspaper report.

The websites corrupted by the hackers are mostly Chinese, and have been programmed to steal passwords for computer games which can be sold for money on the black market.

It is said that hackers may also exploit this flaw to steal people’’s bank details, private data and identities.

“That’’s a big fear right now,” said Paul Ferguson of Trend Micro security researcher, warning of “mayhem” if fraudsters succeed.

Microsoft has published a list of technical changes that their customers may use to avoid attacks until it updates the software and eliminates the vulnerability.

The company has also recommended the use of firewalls as well as anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

Some web security experts think that it would be better to use an alternative browser like Firefox, Safari or Opera, which are all available for free downloading.

However, many feel that switching browsers may be an over-reaction.

“It’s certainly a fix and gets around this problem, but Firefox, Google Chrome and other browsers all have their own security issues,” said Graham Cluley, a virus expert at internet security firm Sophos.

What happened before the Big Bang

A team of astrophysicists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has said that their new theoretical interpretation of an imprint from the earliest stages of the universe may also shed light on what came before the Big Bang.

“It’s no longer completely crazy to ask what happened before the Big Bang,” said Marc Kamionkowski, Caltech’s Robinson Professor of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics.

Kamionkowski joined graduate student Adrienne Erickcek and senior research associate in physics Sean Carroll to propose a mathematical model explaining an anomaly in what is supposed to be a universe of uniformly distributed radiation and matter.

Their investigations turn on a phenomenon called inflation, first proposed in 1980, which posits that space expanded exponentially in the instant following the Big Bang.

“Inflation starts the universe with a blank slate,” Erickcek described.

The hiccup in inflation, however, is that the universe is not as uniform as the simplest form of the theory predicts it to be. Some parts of it are more intensely varied than others.

Until recently, measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, a form of electromagnetic radiation that permeated the universe 400,000 years after the Big Bang, were consistent with inflation.

Miniscule fluctuations in the CMB seemed to be the same everywhere.

But a few years ago, some researchers scrutinized data from NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). They discovered that the amplitude of fluctuations in the CMB is not the same in all directions.

“If your eyes measured radio frequency, you’d see the entire sky glowing. This is what WMAP sees,” Kamionkowksi described.

WMAP depicts the CMB as an afterglow of light from shortly after the Big Bang that has decayed to microwave radiation as the universe expanded over the past 13.7 billion years.

Kamionkowksi’s model predicts more cold than hot spots in the CMB.

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music Phone launched in India

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music Phone launched in IndiaNokia has launched the latest “iPhone killer” in India, its first touchscreen mobile phone, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which is expected to give Apple Inc.’s iconic iPhone a run for its money.

The feature-packed phone, said D. Shivakumar, managing director, Nokia India, is a better converged device than Apple’s iPhone 3G.

Unlike the iPhone which comes with a 2-megapixel camera, Nokia 5800 is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, LED flash and video capability.

While the phone’s virtual QWERTY keyboard is ideal for text messaging, email and instant messaging, the WiFi, 3G, GPRS, dual-band WCDMA, HSDPA, WLAN (802.11 b/g) and HSCSD support ensures wireless access to the internet.

The Symbian 60-based phone is capable of playing audio and video files in multiple formats and for the music or movie buffs, this is a boon as it comes with a whopping 8GB microSD card (note: 5800 has built-in 128MB memory) and for those who want more, an optional 16GB card.

In addition, the phone has a crystal clear 3.2-inch display and a tilt sensor (similar to Apple’s accelerometer) and an in-built A-GPS receiver with voice navigation.

Other features include virtual keypad with stylus input support, Bluetooth 2.0, handwriting recognition software, FM radio, built-in surround sound stereo speakers with eight-band graphic equalizer, Nokia Maps, haptic touch technology, Mobile Transfer Protocol support, and TV out – video cable included – that allows streaming of multimedia.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic wins hands down in several departments, including:

Dhoni, gliders to draw kids to school

The good attendance awards for the students of Jharkhand would be a thrilling glider ride soon. After mid-day meals, uniform, barber facility, books and bicycles, Jharkhand government hopes that flying in a motor glider would attract more students to the schools and stop the drop-out rate.

“These are efforts to boost attendance in schools. Students with good attendance record will get the chance to fly in gliders,” said HRD Minister Bandhu Tirkey. “We are also trying to rope in India One-Day captain M S Dhoni in April as part of efforts to stop dropout,” Tirkey said.

The proposal for the motor-glider ride has been approved by Civil Aviation ministry recently and school children of Dumka would enjoy the first ride, the minister said.

“It will be a 10-15 minute ride for each student who would be selected after checking attendance register. Students of class III-VIII will be shortlisted for the ride,” Tirkey said.

Expressing hope that the children would be excited by the latest idea to attend schools in tribal-dominated areas, the minister said, “Ideas are good, but strict monitoring of attendant is necessary.”

An estimated Rs 42 lakh would be spent annually to fly students in gliders, the minister said. A trained attendant would be present during the trip. The glider would stay for five days in each district with two students flying at a time.

“Up to 200 students from each district will be selected for the trip. This will attract more students to schools. But we have to make more efforts to boost regular attendance,” he added.

Construction of airstrips and other related facilities have begun, he said. But doctors have advised that children with a history of ache in the ear should intimate the authorities before taking the flight.

“Even a new-born can take a glider-ride, as it flies in specific conditions. But a child having a past history of ear ache should inform the authorities,” Paediatrician Dr Ajit Sahay said.

“They can use ear-plug to avoid ache in the ear at the time of flying, otherwise the glider is safe. Only medicines like paracetamol are needed in emergency,” said Sahai. The government had already provided barbers to the students to save “money and time” of the students.

The school authorities have been directed to see whether the students crop hair and trim nails regularly. “I told them that celebration of Global Hand-Washing Day is not a one-day affair. It should be followed daily,” the minister said.

Tirkey said efforts were on to get Dhoni’s appointment in April. “Already we have message from Dhoni in our literacy and health campaigns. Efforts are on to involve him in a programme in April,” the minister said.
