Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus and is celebrated in almost all parts of India in myriad cultural forms, with great devotion. Millions of people take a dip in places like Ganga Sagar (point where the river Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal) and Prayag and pray to the Sun God (Surya). It is celebrated with pomp in southern parts of India as Pongal, and in Punjab as Lohri and Maghi.
In the western Indian state of Gujarat, the celebrations are even bigger. People offer thousands of their colorful oblations to the Sun in the form of beautiful kites. The act stands as a metaphor for reaching to their beloved God, the one who represents the best. Makar Sankranthi also happens to be the day on which Bhishma, the grand sire of Pandavas and Kauravas from the epic Mahabharata voluntarily left his mortal coil.
‘Rangoli’ is a Sanskrit word which means a creative expression of art through the use of color. The word rangolirangoli may also have come from “rang” (color) + “aavalli” (row), which means row of colors, or from rang+avalli, which means creepers of colors. Basically, Rangoli is the art of drawing images and motifs on the floor and walls of one’s home using different color powders. The Rangoli designs are passed down through generations, with some of them being hundreds of years old. Though the designs vary in different sections of India, the basic approach is common. The designs are geometric and proportioned. It has been a tradition in culturally rich India to draw Rangoli on the festivals and other auspicious occasions as it is considered a holy ritual. There is a unique relationship between the festival of diwali and rangoli. The patterns are made with finger using rice powder, crushed lime stone, or colored chalk. They may be topped with grains, pulses, beads, or flowers. Since the entire objective of makingrangoli in diwali is to welcome Goddess Laxmi, small footprints coming into the home, representing the footprints of the

LUCKNOW, India — Four trains collided Saturday in two separate accidents caused by dense winter fog in northern India, killing five people and injuring about 50 others, police and railway officials said.
The first accident took place near the town of Etawah, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, when a train entering a station rammed another train that had stopped there. Ten people, including the driver of one of the trains, were injured, according to Brij Lal, a senior police official.
A second similar accident occurred near Kanpur, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, and left five people dead and about 40 others injured, some seriously, district magistrate Anil Sagar said.
“Both these accidents were due to dense fog,” said railway official N.K. Srivastava. He said the trains were traveling at low speeds in both accidents.
Fog, which is a usual winter occurrence across northern India, has disrupted railway schedules across Uttar Pradesh, Srivastava said.
Fog also delayed dozens of domestic and international flights in and out of New Delhi, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

In the event of Indo-Pak nuclear war, India will emerge as the ultimate winner after wiping off Pakistan, but lose up to 500 million of its own people, a book on former US President Bill Clinton’s presidential years has claimed.
Pulitzer Prize-Winning author and historian Taylor Branch claimed that the Indian leaders had portrayed such a scenario in the event of an Indo-Pak nuclear war (during Kargil conflict in 1999) to the then US President Clinton.
The portion on nuclear warfare appears in the chapter titled ‘Eight Missiles in Baghdad’, in which the author of the book claims that Clinton told him that New Delhi would nuke Pakistan annihilating the entire country, if anyone in Islamabad triggered the nuclear bombs against it.
“The president first scribbled a note to himself that Strobb Talbott owed him a report on his recent trip to South Asia,” Branch writes in his 700-page book The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President, referring to the taped conversations he had with Clinton in the White House.
Talbott, now president of the Brookings Institute, served under the Clinton Administration during 1993-2001.
The book, which hit the stores on Tuesday, has claimed to give an insight into the eight years of Clinton’s presidency, which has not been heard before.
“He called this the one region on the globe facing a serious threat of nuclear war between two nations, India and Pakistan. Their mutual enmity was historically constant, yet chillingly erratic,” Branch writes.
“In private, he (Clinton) disclosed, Indian officials spoke of knowing roughly how many nuclear bombs the Pakistanis possessed, from which they calculated that a doomsday nuclear volley would kill 300 to 500 million Indians while annihilating all 120 million Pakistanis.
The Indians would thus claim “victory” on the strength of several hundred million countrymen they figured would be left over,” he writes.
“But on the other side, the Pakistanis insisted that their rugged mountain terrain would shield more survivors than the exposed plains of India. “They really talk that way,” Clinton sighed. “We have bad relations with both of them,” he said,” Branch writes.
Onboard Air India One, Mar.31 (ANI): As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh boards the last commercial jet commissioned by Air India for VVIP flights, one can”t help but get nostalgic.
Called Air India 001, this is just another Boeing 737-400 operated by the national carrier. The 20-year-old aircraft is modified whenever the Prime Minister or President travel overseas.
The Prime Minister has a small cabin to himself which has a double bed, a table and some chairs. It is also equipped with office facilities.
The official delegation comprising of his staff, officials, security detail, reporters are seated in the business and economy class. The aircraft also carries a huge amount of cargo which includes communication and security related equipment as well as catering goods.
But, all this will soon be history. After the Prime Minister returns from the G-20 summit on Friday (April 3), this aircraft will go back into commercial service.
The Prime Minister and President will hence forth use three special jets bought from the United States at a cost of Rs.734 crores.
These latest aircraft of the Boeing 737 series are equipped with Self Protection Suites (SPS) for electronic warfare integrated onto the aircraft to provide greater security from enemy missiles.
SPS include radar warning receivers, missile-approach warning systems and counter-measure systems. The aircraft would have the capability to shoot metal chaff and flares to deviate radar-guided missiles and heat-seeking missiles off the track.
The first of the three jets landed in India in August last year, with the other two following subsequently. Since then, the aircraft have undergone extensive flight trials and the crew has been trained for handling the IAF’’s latest induction.
To be named ”Rajdoot” after the first set of Tu-124s used by the squadron for VIP in 1970, the new Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) are fitted with the fuel-efficient CFM-56 engines from US General Electric and French Snecma, and can cover a range of 6,000 nautical miles or 11,000 km.
However, it will not be the Prime Minister’’s prerogative to be the first user of these aircraft. President Pratibha Patil will first be flown on the inaugural flight of Indian Air Force’’s Boeing Business Jets from the Palam Air Force base on April 1. She will also be flying to Poland and Spain. Later in April, the Prime Minister would probably use the BBJs to crisscross the country while campaigning for a second term. (ANI)
New Delhi, Mar.31 (ANI): Through the Australian Sports Outreach Program (ASOP), Australia has distributed 5.8 lakh rupees this year to support two youth sports programs in India.
Australia has provided 463,800 rupees to the Naz Foundation’s Goal – Reaching New Heights netball program for disadvantaged girls. This program is unique in that it challenges girls to learn new skills and improves confidence through a non-contact, women-only sport.
For many of the participants it is the first time they have been involved in any form of organised physical activity. ASOP has provided funds to expand the program through a ‘training of trainers’ workshop for potential coaches, and to refurbish local netball courts.
On March 24, Deputy High Commissioner Dr Lachlan Strahan participated in a Goal workshop at the Deepalay School, Govindpuri. “I think sport is a wonderful vehicle to empower girls and young women” said Dr Strahan. “Apart from improving physical fitness, which is important for doing well in academic studies, sport teaches girls leadership skills and gives them greater confidence in themselves.”
Australia has also provided 115,517 rupees to the Youth Football Club of Rurka Kalan in the Punjab to develop a coaching program and translate training material into local languages. This program will facilitate a structured approach to physical education in the region.
Australia and India share a common sporting heritage and have a long history of competition at the international level, including in forums such as the Commonwealth Games. As Delhi 2010 approaches, the Australia Government is pleased to encourage further sporting excellence and the development of grassroots sport in India through ASOP.
ASOP was launched in July 2006 and this year provided around 10 lakh rupees in funding to countries across the Asia Pacific region for grass roots sport development.
The goal of ASOP is to increase community participation in sport and physical activity while providing an avenue for broader community development in areas such as health promotion, leadership and social cohesion. Youth, women and girls, and people with disability are focus groups for ASOP. (ANI)

Around 3,000 former extremists of various factions of the CPI (ML) and CPI (Maoist) will join the Praja Rajyam Party in Hyderabad on February 24 in the presence of party president Chiranjeevi and Yuvarajyam president Pavan Kalyan.
Dr P Mitra and others have been working on motivating ex-naxals to join the PRP. The association of Marxist-Leninist singer Gadar and other pro-naxal intellectuals with Pawan Kalyan is said to have facilitated this move.
The first meeting of the former naxalites was organised in Guntur in December 2008 which was attended by over 800 people.
GJM repeats salvo, will collect taxes from people in Hills
Govt says without revenue it will be forced to withdraw basic services from the area
The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has reiterated its stand that it will begin collecting all taxes from the residents of the Hills from March 7 onwards as part of its non-cooperation movement.
Considering the elections, however, citizens will be allowed to pay their vehicle tax to the district administration, senior GJM leaders said on Friday.
“Till now, people were not paying any taxes to the government following our call. But March 7 onwards, they will pay the taxes to us,” Morcha general secretary Roshan Giri said.
“We are working out the modalities and will announce these in a few days,” he added.
It is also reported that the state government is considering withdrawal of government services in Darjeeling from March 7.
Commenting on the issue, State Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti told The Indian Express that no time frame has been fixed for the move, but lack of revenue may eventually force the administration to withdraw government services from the Hills.
“How can the government function without revenue? If people don’t pay taxes, electricity and telephone bills, how can the services be sustained? Ultimately, they will have to be discontinued,” Chakrabarti said.
A group of high-level GJM leaders, meanwhile, are back after a trip to Lalgarh, where tribals have been up in arms against alleged excesses by the state police following the attack on the chief minister’s convoy by suspected Maoists in November last year.
Since mid-January, the Morcha has been trying hard to get approval of tribal leaders for the inclusion of Dooars and Terai region of Jalpaiguri district in the proposed Gorkhaland state.
“We had a successful meeting with tribals in Lalgarh. In fact, tribal leader Chattradhar Mahato has declared full support for Gorkhaland, which includes the Dooars,” Giri said.
Chakrabarti, however, seemed unperturbed by the development. He claimed that the state government is not concerned about the Morcha’s meeting with Lalgarh leaders. “This is a free country. Anyone can meet anyone they want,” Chakrabarti said.
